Could Essendon be big improvers

Essendon supporters in this post are dellusional!!!!! ..... I would be very suprised if Essendon finish higher than 12th. As already mentioned their best players are ageing, then core group of youngsters in 2006 were average and their new draftees wont have an influence for at least 2 to 3 years.

My prediction ... bootom 4.

Buddy How in the world can you us dellusinonal when we have soo many F**** reason why we will improve , determanation , a good pre season a full side and inclustion such as jetta ,davey, micheal , gumby how can we not improve soo dont come on here telling us were dellusinonal Look too 2007 ... and see how much of a better side we are

Every team seems to have soo many reasons while they will improve but thats based on the assumption no bad things occur as well. Every team thinks they've just drafted the next judd or cousins or kerr.

If Essendon do well next year good luck to them ..... but I doubt it.

Carlton to be the first club to win 17 premierships :p

Only if they can win a few early games , including the pre-season...To Mentally get them in the right frame of mind of WINNING. Losing takes your second efforts, your mental thinking away..

All last year, they seemed to stop running here and there and look to the team-mate next to them when something got through..

And Lloyd can't do alll.....Sheedy has got to coach them as a well oiled machine,,,,and Not rely on Individual Performances...like the earlier successful years....He needs to have a look at Neil Craigs book of how to make No Names play or seem to play like Super-Stars....

But I hope they can...But I doubt it......I think Carlton is the One...to go up.

Im not saying essendon will be great next year we do have problems yes thats true . but saying we wont even get past 12 spot thats realy pafetic dont you think. atleast 8th spot would be reasonable for next year

Parrot, when did you start following Essendon?

I think you'll find it's 3rd Quarters we struggle with more than the 4th.

Bombers usually go okay against us for 3 quarters then hit an iceberg at 3/4 time.

Those people that are looking at 2006 as a minor blip on Essendon's radar have obviously forgotten that they finished 13th in 2005. It should also be remembered that James Hird struggled to see out games this year. It isn't going to get any easier for him next year, his body has taken too much battering. Lloyd will be a definite bonus for the Bombers, but on the other hand it means that Lucas' influence will be reduced. Lucas has played his best football up forward when Lloyd is not playing. At other times Lucas gets lost out on the flanks.

It is possible that Essendon could climb a few spots, but it is also possible that the performance of the last 2 seasons is a reflection of the rebuilding process that Essendon are currently going through & there will be some tough seasons ahead. You don't just replace players like Mercuri, Misiti, Hird, Fletcher etc. You may draft players to fill their spots but they don't replace them. Just as Carlton have been unable to replace the likes of Silvagni, Bradley, Ratten, McKay & Brown. Realistically Essendon should not expect to see finals action for another 2 years.

Its called a dead cat bounce. Essendon weren't as bad as they appeared last year, although they are on the way down. They'll get a few guys back from injury, add a couple through trades, get some last mileage out of Hird, Fletcher, Johnson and co, and bounce back up the ladder - maybe even getting a top-8 spot next year.

Exactly what Carlton did in 2004 - then the real collapse comes. Big hope for Essendon is that they had their first drop prior to a strong draft - if they drafted well this year they might just avoid a complete collapse. We'll have to wait and see though

I'm not sure that Essendon's recruits of late can be compared to Carltons prior to 2003...

eg Digby Morrell, Bannister, McGrath etc these guys boosted their side artificially. Essendon will get Lloyd, Michael, Lovett, Campo on board after they missed a substantial parts of the season... You'd have to say that these players are more quality they Carltons mature recruits. In addition, we have recruited a very large number of players through the draft of late - I believe that from 39 players about 24 or 26 players have been recruited from 2002 ND and beyond (ie young players).

I reckon we will do alright next year and the year after
infact i can see us making top eight in 2009 cause of all our recruting and lloyd's comback and so on
but once fletch and mal retire which will proabbaly be at the end of 2009 is where the problems happen
our defence depth is what is minimal
as of the moment we have about a zillion young kids coming thru the midfield and they will be good in a few year's time
some of them even looking good now
up forward we have johns and now gumby as back up plus lovett monfires davey etc.
in defence there isnt too much on the horizon which is one of the reason why i thought we should have gone for hansen rather than gumby because hansen has always been a natural defender
but anyhow remians to be seen
but like i said while im fairly optimistic for the next couple of years im a bit sceptical about what happens after that

Agree.

Because Neil Craig has won how many flags? If Sheedy has 1 legacy it will be that he more than most others, has been able to make no names play like stars. Names like Barnard, Blumfield & Moorcroft, Hills, Grenvold & Olarenshaw, Walsh, Weston & Bradbury were all a huge part of Sheedy's success. To even hint he has relied on individuals & not team performance to achieve success shows a complete lack of knowledge on your behalf.
Hopefully he can do it again with guys like Slattery, Nash & Dyson - none of them high profile picks but all an important part of our potential to improve.
Yes we COULD be big improvers but there are a lot of things that need to go right before we even consider talking about anything other than winning more games than 06. Personally I go into every season knowing full well there is a chance for every side to make the 8 given a good run with injuries & the potential of all players realised. If we can make a positive start then the confidence of the young guys will rise, the team will gel & the finals become a possibility. If not then we will look dissinterested & dissorganised at times as the young guys find their feet & lose more games than win. Its as simple as that! Confidence & momentum can take any side to the finals.

Worst midfield in recent history, Lloyd will get them to 14th

Yet, we were 6th in clearances and 6th for inside 50s....

Watson will improve, Winderlich will improve, Dyson will improve, Dempsey will improve, Lovett weill play more, we recruited 4 midfielders in this years draft.

JJ should go into the season a lot fitter next season..

I don't think we have the worst midfield and it will be better next year then in 2006.

I'm not expecting big things but I am expecting a finish 11 or above.

Add Lloyd and Mal too much sides and I'd say you'd say significant improvement....

But at essendon you also have Campo (12 games this season), JJ (fit for only half the season), Lovett (around 13 games), Laycock (our second ruckman who played like 8 games), Winderlich ( played about 8 games - was hitting his best when injured)......

Those are players may not be top line players, but I think they will make a significant difference to Essendon's line up...

And another thing. I believe Essendon recuited poorly this year. With the exception of Gumby they have chosen players who they do not need, nor are capable of building a team around. The battle of the outside, receiving short people will be interesting at Essendon over the next 3-4 years.

Thank goodness they resigned JJ or else they might actually go through a game with donuts in the clearance count.

We were 6th in clearances with JJ having a poor first half of the season and missing a few games.

Hislop and Houli aren't recievers or short people
