Opinion Could we learn from Richmond?

There's very little to take away from Richmond other than the competition is so even now you just have to get yourself in the frame and hope you get the luck with injuries etc.

They are a Bulldogs, not a Hawthorn.
I disagree.

They have been nothing short of impeccable off field this year. That’s the standard of a premiership team.

Whilst as a football team alone, they’re not world beaters, but get everything else right and they’ve proved they are.

Being impeccable off field is not something Richmond have just recently invented

That’s true.

But they did it, didn’t they? They were a basket case this time last year but they fixed everything up and bred positivity in and out of the club.

We could take a leaf out of that book. Maybe start with not trying to lynch our coach at every opportunity. Stick fat.

That's what I meant by putting yourself in the frame, you have to get everything right then hold your breath. But they aren't a dynasty like Hawks. That manic pressure and desire will drop off just a touch now they have been to the top of the mountain.

Yep, I think we can learn something from Richmond ...

... recruit the cast of The Hangover to send a rocket up the backsides of the board

HFF You probably won't remember but in the Buckley Megathread (which is now closed), you mocked me for thinking that we should try and aspire to be like Richmond. Just wanted to ask your opinion now.

Pies 2018 vs Tigers 2017? Obviously there's a time lag in some of my comments but here goes:

President:
Peggy O'Neal on record as understanding difference between governance and management; keeps a low profile. We have Ed.
CEO:
Brendon Gale former CEO of the AFL Players' Assocn. Appointed Richmond CEO August 2009. Ed grabbed Pert from a radio station. Next Cwood CEO??
Football Manager:
Richmond = Neil Balme. Cwood have sacked / sidelined Balme twice. Current Cwood Football Mngr (Walsh) looks like he knows his stuff
Senior Coach:
Hardwick - played in flags at 2 clubs - (sees Sheedy and Choco in action), assistant at Hawthorn when they won in 2008 - from Clarkson school. Goes through competitive selection process to get appointed to Richmond.
Buckley - no flags as AFL player. 2 years in media. Assistant in 2010 flag - sets up forward press? No selection process to get senior gig at club where he played.
Assistants:
End of 2016 - Richmond clean out 3-4?. Cwood - Burns goes to Hawthorn end of 2017. Richmond appoint Leppitsch & Caracella.
Flag experience as players - Leppitsch (3), Caracella (2), McRae (3). Xavier Clarke - Indigenous coach (why aren't there more?). Other assistants at Richmond inc Ben Rutten. Brenton Sanderson appointed to Cwood without going through competitive selection process.
Cwood assistants' flag experience inc new appointments (Longmuir, Teague??) - nil
Brownlows on coaching panel - Cwood 3 (Harvey 2 + Buckley). Richmond - nil.
Fitness / Strength / Injuries:
Richmond make tackles stick / break tackles. Next to no injuries. Play hard, run out games when it matters - ie September.
Pies - do we have a player with the core strength of Martin? Some of our players need bulking up. Our recent injury record is not good.
Club Reviews:
Richmond's external (one of the Big Four firms?). Cwood 2 x internal - Geoff Walsh & the acting CEO + 1 x external? - Chris Thomas - governance?
Game plan: - general consensus seems to be that previpusly Hardwick might have "over coached, micro managed and had a complicated game plan that confused the players" - evidence? they chipped it around. Richmond's game plan and Hardwick's approach revamped in one off season. Cwood - game plan and Buckley's mngt style - open to improvement?
Summary:
At times in 2017 Pies looked ok. We couldn't sustain it throughout games or throughout the season. Richmond played at their peak when it mattered. Can we "do a 2017 Richmond" in 2018? Possible but not probable IMO

Not having a dictator in charge perhaps?
I think Richmond plays a lot like we used to. With a few tweaks we could get back near that level next season and challenge for an elimination final appearance

We have more then just Gameplan Problems.

We lack Leadership or a Culture that the Players can get Behind and That is to start off with

Yeah, I disagree with that. Players are a really solid unit and developing well. We have a host of emerging leaders in Moore, Adams, Treloar and JDG. Future is looking better.

Now can you just do this again....for all of the other 16 clubs that didn't win the premiership?

Not interested in being Richmond.
What have they achieved that we haven't already done?

A club like Hawthorn is who we should aspire to be and beyond.

That's what success looks like.
Top down.

This is a really interesting post. Let's hope that the review is aimed at this goal.

Eloquently written, it almost sounds convincing.

Peggy ONeill fell into their laps. The board was so divided one camp had one nominee and another camp had another. She got the gig basically because she was Switzerand in an internal unresolved board dispute . Besides, last years premiership president is one of teh most divisive in the game and that didnt stop the Dogs winning a flag.

Pert is gone. Point is moot.

Balme is gone, as you say we now have Walsh. Luckily the Allen mistake resolved itself quickly

Assistants....always good to look at in hindsight. They won the flag hence have the best assistants...and as you say we are turning over just like Richmond did last year.

Fitness - again hindsight....the team that wins the flag has a good injury run....theres a shock. Pies werent too bad for injuries this year btw. And we are getting a new fitness guy arent we as per the end of year review? And Martin? Name anybody with his core strength!!!

Club reviews....not sure accountants are the people who should do football reviews. We did one. Thats what matters. Changes have been made and more are to come but wholesale changes are not needed.

Game plan....its amazing that the team that wins the flag always has the best game plan. Happens every year. But nobody predicts it n advance!

Summary.....If Richmond can win a flag then so can Collingwood. Our list is in good shape and our best football just needs to be sustained.

Last year I said 2017 would be "interesting". 2018 will be completely fascinating. I'm interested in which teams we will climb over or dislodge (inc reasons) if we are going to make the 8.

Our competitive head to head games against the top sides this year in particular surely is cause for encouragement.

Bad set shot goalkicking v Tigers
Loss after siren to Giants
One win one loss v Geelong
Draw to Adelaide after 40+ point lead
Win over Swans after monster first quarter
Massive come from behind win over West Coast with 3-4 late goals
