Opinion Could we learn from Richmond?

We can learn from Richmond (well what happened to them anyway)

  1. Get a great draw (only played GWS of all the finals teams twice for the season....there's 4+ extra wins straight away! Guaranteed finals)
  2. Few if any injuries (none to key players) 15 of them played 20+games this season Continuity breeds confidence.
  3. Get two guns to have "career seasons" (Martin and Cotchin went two levels above anything they've produced before)
  4. Clear an injured Gun (They cleared Deledio....who will we clear? Ben Reid?) Having fit hungry youngsters playing week in week out certainly helps continuity and confidence!
  5. Throw out the game plan....let em loose! (Dimma had the same rep as Bucks "Too involved, too constraining"...Dimma read the writing on the wall. Will Bucks?) In the last month we played a lot more attacking footy...is this how we're going to play in 2018?
  6. Change the game day experience for the supporters. Less Kiss Cam, more "Back in Black". Give the cheer squads back to the people instead of over sanitising them and restraining their cheek. Let em loose! If the Tigers really think they have an army...unleash the beast that has always been Collingwood's greatest strength. Unleash the supporters! Set up CFC cheersquads around the G. Encourage originality and "support" Make the entire Ponsford stand OUR CHEER SQUAD....we could fill it easily. Stop thinking corporate and start thinking "barrackers" again.
A few things we can do.

Lets be fair here.....its who you play twice based on the 2016 ladder that matters......THE AFL arent Nostradamus!!

That said I'm sure it was a great draw for them whichever way you cut it

I think that was the point. Tigas got a great draw this year, theory being we should be similarly blessed in 2018. Of course the reality will be that we'll end up having return games against Geelong, Essendon, Melbourne, Richmond, and GWS.

Looking forward to next year. Got some awesome talent coming up in treloar, adams, degoey, and my personal favourite josh daicos. He is something special i can already see it. And the best thing is this list is good enough to play in A premiership..it might be a little bit but we will get there. Will be interesting to have some people outside of collingwood coming in and doing their thing.

If there is going to be any improvement it must start at number 5, no amount of anything else will bare fruit unless Nathan learns to gain some flexibility and listen to constructive criticism from those around him - even the playing group, in fact even externally if it is warranted

Number 5 Robroy22................. number 5, that number again? number 5

And my point was that the draw was based on the ladder from the year prior (eg Hawthorn finished third and they played them twice). Its only turned out easy (or easier)in hindsight. They played twice teams that finished 3,4, 9, 14 and 17. On paper a reasonable but not easy draw.

If we play twice next year the same teams that Richmond played twice (based on the same ladder position) it will be Richmond GWS Melbourne Freo and Gold Coast. Not that easy.

Firstly, the final position is based on teams finishing position after the finals so swap Richmond for Geelong.

Secondly, there is no such thing as an easy AFL game these days but that is still better than the Adelaide, Bears, Cats, St Kilda, and Western Bulldogs we'd have to face if we had the same 2, 3, 10, 11, and 18 we had this year. There will always be teams that rise and fall season to season (we had the Bumbers as the 18th team this year) and those things will obviously skew the relative ease of your draw. Which was our point.

For the record, the Doggies 2017 draw of 2, 4, 8, 7, and 17 will see the Tigas play Crows, Giants, Bumbers, Gold Coast and Weagles twice next year.

Also need to do some serious business in recruiting a big forward in this off season. It seems to be our weakness.

Personally I'd prefer to see a rolling draw and leave it to chance about whether you get a good draw or otherwise.

Or rolling draw for four opponents and one fixed "every year" twice a year game (to keep the non VIC teams happy)

WC v Freo
Ad v PA
GC v Bris
Syd v GWS
Coll v Ess
Geel v Haw
Ric v Car
NM v WB
StK v Mel

Damien Hardwick and the whole Richmond coaching and admin ranks had some sole searching last season.

Honesty and acceptance of failings and shortcomings were embraced.

Does anybody here really believe that Eddy and Nathan are putting up their hands and being held to account for 6 failed seasons?

The night we win our next premiership me and probably a few others will get our revenge on what they did to the holden centre. Can’t wait. Melbourne will be ours. ;)

I was in the city in the hours after the 90 win................................. wow just wow!!

"Sole" searching? Were they looking at their boots? I think you mean "soul" searching. Maybe Pies need to check their soles and their souls? :)

Whilst I am all for the easier draw, we have struggled the last couple of years against those sides (St Kilda, Carlton come to mind). I think if we do double up on those type of teams we need to win both to show we have improved.
From memory Essendon had an easy draw in 2017 and they dropped all the easy ones.

Please excuse this bump. I created this thread in April 2017 with the simple question - ‘Could we learn from Richmond?’

Almost four years and three flags later, the answer is a resounding YES!

We all hope that this Richmond dynasty is coming to an end, but that may just be wishful thinking.

In 2018 we seemed to be adopting some similar approaches and famously tipped them out of the finals. Since that fateful night, things have gone amiss and Richmond have reached new heights.

What can we do to bridge the gap? What can we learn from Richmond’s success?

We could learn to take cheap shots behind the play and at the base of packs . . .

Maybe we should hire a coach that knows what he’s doing instead of pretending Buckley will turn out to be the next Hardwick
