Wow thought the Stones was the original. And it was a B side!
Think they said Irma Thomas did backing vocals on this?

Highly likely. Naomi Neville the songwriting credit is a nom de plume for Allen Toussaint (also wrote "Time Is On My Side" covered by the Rolling Stones) and Irma Thomas was his preferred singer to demo his songs.

Just a bit late to the party but I recently discovered Irma through Black Mirror as have many other people it seems!

The best version I've heard was from a 1970s Iggy Pop bootleg I used to own (sadly stolen) - it was an absolute killer version.
Yes, Iggy's version is brilliant. You should be able to get a version because I have a few CDs/records that include it. These are "Australia 83", "The Legendary Breaking Point Tour '83" and on "Paris Palace 1979" which is found on a Box Set called "Psychophonic Medicine" (really worth getting this)

FWIW it's on Spotify.

While Allen Toussaint is being discussed, he was the producer of this record.

Later covered by this Australian legend.

Reminds me of a radio episode of "This Sporting Life" where Roy & HG, discussing Grand Final entertainment, kept referring to back to "Thorpey" doing the "ooh poo pah doo" for 20 minutes at Sunbury as the pinnacle.

On Allen Toussaint, I was googling up something the other day - covers of "Freedom For The Stallion" and I noticed a spotify playlist of 100 Allen Toussaint songs, mostly covers of his compositions by other people. His influence on rock and roll is major.

Trini Lopez...yeah nah. Seriously, this is a very enjoyable album. You've heard the original of this a hundred times...and I'm not saying you're going to hear heavy blues psych that betters the original, but it's better than you might guess. Who doesn't love a flute solo.

Arranged horns for the Band as well.

Had a listen, pretty wild!

Don't know if you remember this TV show. "Vision On". Closing theme was "Java" by Allen Toussaint. Maybe the first time I'd heard one of his tunes long before having any idea about him. An early cover version of it was also used in "The Muppet Show".

Here's another curious one. I saw someone post this the other day.

The original version of "Mahna Mahna" used in "The Muppet Show" was composed by an Italian composer, Piero Umiliani for what's described as a 1968 Swedish softcore pr0n documentary called "Sweden Heaven And Hell"

Sorry, late to the thread, but couldn't see that anyone mentioned this one:

Much as I love On Broadway (The Drifters) I can't go past George Benson's version from Weekend in LA, featuring that incredible guitarist Angus Young.

John Farnham’s cover of Help by the Beatles is a much better version. Where the Beatles were all “poppy, preppy and upbeat” with the song. Farnham’s version put the lyrics to the fore front and turned it into classic. Much the same way that Cash did with Hurt. Where Reznor’s version, was more anger and self hate based, Cash put the emotion and feeling into the song, which describes not only the hurt he went through himself, but the hurt he also inflicted onto others (Mainly June Carter).

With Disturb’s cover of the Sound of Silence, it’s almost a follow up to the original S&G song. Where the melody of Simon and Garfunkel serves as a warning of what could happen. Disturbs version comes across as being the aftermath of what has happened. So I think both songs compliment each other quite well.

Another cover that compliments the original, is Kasey Chambers cover of Eminem’s lose yourself. I say this not being a huge Kasey Chambers fan, but the anger and bitterness she is able to emulate singing the song show cases the lyrics in a different way. When Eminem himself has publicly endorsed the cover, it does say a lot of how well she did.

I posted this elsewhere but it is better suited to here. Cover of Spice Girls song, Say You'll Be There.

Post Modern Jukebox - "Say you'll be there".
Nice trumpet player.

Prince won a Grammy for this song. "Call My Name".

It took Morgan James 2 years to get permission from Prince to do this song for her album "Hunter". It was only after his producer convinced him to listen to her song that he gave permission.
What a voice and the guitar is really good. Hunter is one those great albums, you've probably never heard.
