NO< NO NO. Original loads better. Hutchence not fit to wipe Gerry Humphry's boots. I also prefer the underrated Jake Holmes' Dazed and Confused.

Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochrane

There are plenty of covers of this original song by Magnetic Fields (video footage is mashed in from another source), but I couldn't find one that exceeds it.

Also, loved looking at Johnny Cash and "Hurt" from page 1 of this thread. Have to say though that I also quite like the NIN version as well

In no particular order:

Sinead O'connor Nothing compares to you/Prince
Fine young cannibals Suspicious minds/Elvis Presley
Cindy Lauper Girls just wanna have fun/Robert Hazard
Brian Ferry Jealous guy/John Lennon
Manfred Man. Blinded by the light/Bruce Springsteen
Joan Jett I love rock n roll/ The arrows
Nirvana The man who sold the world/David Bowie
The Byrds Tambourine man/Bob Dylan
Whitney Houston I will always love you/Dolly Parton

The version by Fine Young Cannibals was and is a predictable abortion. Ferry's "Jealous Guy" isn't bad, but Lennon's is better. The Byrds one is an interesting comparison, I personally love the Byrds' arrangement, but they only do a couple of the many verses.

Carlos Santana - Black Magic Woman/Fleetwood Mac
Marvin Gaye - Heard It Through The Grapevine/Gladys Knight & The Pips
The Hollies - The Air That I Breathe/Albert Hammond
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe/The Leaves
Harry Nilsson- Without You/Badfinger
Linda Ronstadt - Blue Bayou/Roy Orbison
Linda Ronstadt - You're No Good/Betty Everett

The original Fleetwood Mac every day of the week for me. The version that opens the amazing "Live in Boston" album is even better too. Slightly biased in that I'll take Peter Green over Santana absolutely every day of the week (probably because he's a much better guitar player).

I absolutely adore the Mickey Newbury penned Just Drpped In (To See What Condition My Condition Is In). Originally recorded by The Killer:

This version is fulla Lewis boogie woogie goodness, I highly rate it. However, there's 2 version that beat it. Kenny Rogers and First Edition turned it into a mid-tempo psychedelic classic. Have only recently discovered this video on da 'toob.

Bettye LaVette's soul stomper (this version's been covered by Sharon Jones and The Dapkings)

Has anyone caught Sarah Blasko's version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, from Triple J's Like A Version? She does it justice I think, big shoes to fill. An incredible voice.
