2018 data, the most recent I have available. A sobering reminder that most clubs in the league will be bankrupted this year without an immense bailout, and we are not in a strong position (our net assets are around 2.2 now)

Does that mean another significant loss coming this year? we cant afford another 500k loss

at the very least

academy could be f’ed
swans aflw pipedream

Entirely Depends how generous our sponsors are going to be in these circumstances.

The Academy costs the Sydney Swans in excess of $1 million per annum to run and is largely funded by donations and corporate support

Creative destruction Millky. Joseph Schumpeter was right all along
Creative destruction? Mate, I work in the Arts and Events industry. Or I guess I did now that it is basically dead now that the ****ing campaigner virus walked up to it and shot it in the back of the head exe-****ing-cution style. Now the ****ing footy is gone? Man **** 2020 and all the ****ing shit it brought with it.
120mn in cash reserves Gil has stashed it away for a rainy day. He’ll need all of it.
For his ****ing bonus at "handling the situation"

Arrogant?

The AFL had an obligation to do their best to find a way to get a season played this year.

They made a bunch of compromises about season length, game length, potentially accelerating the fixture with more than one game a week, in order to make that possible despite the virus crisis. They knew there was going to be a break at some point as anti-virus measures strengthened, it was factored in to the plan.

We don't yet know if that attempt is a failure. Maybe by the end of May things have become more controlled and the league can continue? I don't know, you don't know, so why prejudge?

You don't know yet that these Round 1 matches count for nothing.

Players do injuries in preseason games. Players do injuries at training. Players do injuries in games towards the end of the season when their team is mathematically out of contention. It happens. Blaming the AFL for Kreuzer's injury is unjustifiable.

What do you mean we don't know if their attempt was a failure? It lasted one week.

The year isn't over. If we can start playing again in June then there is the possibility to finish a season, and these Round 1 results will count towards that.

The possibility to finish a season that will be compromised. No season is better than a compromised season.

No, it isn't.

If there is a season that means there are games. If there are games that means there is a product, which means revenue. Less than a full season, but still some.

Some revenue is better than no revenue.

Won't be over in June.
Maybe not, but nobody knows, so I don't know why you are so certain about it.

A half or 3/4 long season, if it is possible, it better than no season at all. The AFL had an obligation to do its best to get some sort of season played this year, and that they have already played one round puts us in a better position of having a season completed than if we hadn't had one played yet.

They were definitely hoping to get maybe 3 games played before a forced shut down, it wasn't to be. Let's see how things stand in a couple of months, before then there is no point passing judgment on their attempts to salvage something from the year.

Organised sport , much like travel . Will be the last things that will be reinstated.
Season is toast.

6 months minimum for most things sorry....
9-12 months for travel etc...

maybe, i meant more people wont be locked at home for 6 months
they will gradually let some movement go for things,
i doubt a crowd goes near afl in 2020
hey we all might end up dead, all guessing

but even if its 6 months afl will play they said, i don't think you can shut the economy down for a year and not end up with more deaths than if you just let corona virus run rampant
but again who knows maybe it is toast and you will be right

My actual frustration about it going ahead in the first place lies in the optics of it. At a time when we as Australians need to be taking this threat very seriously and practising social distancing, the AFL continues broadcasting it's contact sport to millions. Frankly it just sent a horrible message, especially when the AFL considers itself a beacon of leadership in the community. They then plowed ahead with the mentality that they could get around it somehow. To me, that's arrogance. We're now left with a season that, IMO, is compromised. Haven't agreed with any of their actions from the moment this thing became an issue so they don't deserve my patience or understanding. If you feel differently then that's fine.
