In answer to a proposition on RWO that we deliberately infect the players to build an immunity.

Yes I agree to a certain extent. The problem is if any players have chronic asthma complications can develop. COVID 19 is a member of a group of viruses that include SARS & MERS. There are also other less virulent strains like 229E, OC43, NL63 and HKU1. Coronaviruses generally cause mild upper respiratory infections. they are generally not dangerous and are unusual because they are passed on from animals to humans. MERS from Dromedary Camels and SARS from Civet Cats but they all link back to a grouping that originated from Bats. SARS came first in 2002.

SARS infected only 8,000 people worldwide but was deadly as 774, about 10%, of those infected died. But SARS disappeared by 2004.

MERS infected only 2,494, mainly in the Middle East. But it was, and is, deadly as 30% of people died. MERS continues to infect people but it is mainly people in close contact with Camels.

229E, OC43, NL63 and HKU1 all had little or no impact and the infection was mild if at all infectious.

COVID 19 is far different to any other Coronavirus as it is highly infectious. Another difference to SARS & MERS is that the majority of infections are mild. It only has a death rate of under 2% and severe infections are under 10%. This is unusual for a chronic Coronavirus infection in that it is almost as though one of the numeral infections is mixed with a SARS. I am not quoting scientific research in my last comment just an observation. This highly infectious and easily spread Coronavirus is heading for epidemic level very quickly which is another thing the others did not do. Will it disappear like SARS did or hang around like a bad smell like MERS? Abate MERS is only being transferred from Camel to Human and infection by human contact seems to have vanished.

It seems, like Flu Viruses, Coronaviruses have their time and then disappear and another one turns up some years later to replace it. They are viruses passed on by Bats to other animals, including humans. That might be a hint to be careful around Bats or animals that live close to Bat habitats. Unlike the Flu these viruses don't seem to last 12 months in their virulent form, infections seem to dwindle. Research says that this particular set of viruses, like Flu, prefer colder conditions to incubate. so TURN OFF THE COLD AIRCON AS A PRECAUTION. Do masks save you from infection? The answer is NO. They have proven to be quite useless. The problem here is that this particular group is spread by touch. Yes sneezing and coughing spread the virus but anything an infected person touches will spread it also. WASH YOUR HAND GEOFFREY. USE HAND SANITISER. TRY NOT TO USE PUBLIC TOILETS AS THERE IS A LINE OF RESEARCH THAT SUGGESTS FAECES MAY BE HIGHLY INFECTIOUS.

This is from what I have read on the subject. I am still reading research and listening to the experts. If Bill Bowtell says close the schools, the close the bloody schools. Kids are dirty little bastards at the best of times and teens are worse lol. I was a kid once I know lol. If Bowtell says ban all public gatherings and close the borders to get this under control until it disappears, bloody do it. This is the premium infectious diseases expert in our country telling it how it is.

As to deliberately exposing players. I suppose it is one way of creating a group immunity but there could be implications and drawbacks such as severe infection due to a preexisting condition. The other thing is insurance would suddenly be worthless if the clubs did this. They would also be breaking the law by deliberately infecting a person with a potentially deadly virus. I hope that brings things into perspective

By the way the certain extent I agree with is that by exposing players to a virus they could build up immunity. But some may not!!! That is the point of my article.

Jim whathisname on Channel 7 news just announced zero crowd for Thursday's AFL opener.

Unconfirmed.

That’s what afl saying

I see a lot of guessing on their strategy

I think the next 7 days will tell us a lot

Biggest source country = USA

In other news I went to Aldi today. No pasta or bog roll.

Young bloke in front of me with red eyes, a red nose and a hanky tried to buy 20 cans of tuna. Wasnt allowed.

Likely not COVID

Government is doing a ******* lousy job. We were given the luxury of being relatively CV-free and having countries like China, Italy, South Korea and Iran to use as examples. But Morrison and co have squandered that time advantage with their 'let's wait and see' approach, instead of being pro-active, using those other countries as warnings, and ensuring the risk of spread was minimised from the get-go. Effing embarrassing.

This Whole Country has gone to ****ing water. You are spot on ****ing embarrassing. Hate to see us under any real serious threat. The ****ing Flu FFS.

I bloody love Tassie

I would move if I could.

Still might.

Locking the borders mate

We don’t need events with 500 or more people

Kids school only has 300 odd kids

Nothing changes much for us

Same spread of virus but lets say it had a mortality of 30% and not 0.5%.

Utter anarchy!

People would be going mental.

think people would be killing each other literally if it got to that point

Road kill capital of Aust, never seen so many dead animals on the road anywhere. Just move it 1000kms north and everyone would live there, great place.

in our lives

Not even in our lives Buddy. There was the HIV/AIDS outbreak in 1985 and by 2012 36 million have died.

The Hong Kong flu hit the world in 1968 and killed over 1 million people

The 1956-58 Asian Flu killed nearly 2 million people. I was born in 1957 so this was in MY life time.

i won't include the 1918 Flu that killed 20-30 million because there is definitely nobody on Big footy that would have been alive.

In fact as Pandemics go this is quite light on death toll, only about 2% of those infected and only around 10% get a severe infection. So far.

I've had the flu once..
I've had heaps of colds
I'd rather not revisit the flu like symptons of Cv19
its nasty AF

COVID 19 symptoms for the majority of people, about 90%, are very mild. Much like a head cold. But for the others it is severe. If you have asthma, Emphysema, any other lung condition you need to be vigilent. I am in the 4% who are highly likely to get severe symptoms

Trying to think of positives, at least the grounds turf will have a nice holiday...#reaching

Here's a few question:
1) if there's no season across all grades how will the draft be assessed by recruiting team and who is at a disadvantag?

2) If there is no season will those with contracts due to expire still be cut? Or is this year a line through it in all aspects from club?

I doubt COVID 19 will last that long. The longest pandemic, no Coronavirus has caused a pandemic, was caused by HIV/AIDS, a retrovirus (meaning it replicates or changes to suit conditions as to survive). SARS lasted 12 months and infected 8,000 people. MERS is still happening but not in human to human contact, only Camel to Human. MERS only infected 2,474 anyway, nearly all in the Middle East.

Coronaviruses don't generally last a long time. But of course we are in strange territory here. They normally infect only a few and kill a lot but this one infects many and kills few

Road kill capital because its still got lots of animals left to be killed. Sad but true.
Theres been a very noticeable difference in the numbers of Paddymelons, Wallaby's and koalas etc since the fires up here in NE NSW
