Feels selfish to feel negative about it all at times I find

I'm very very fortunate to work in an essential service. One that I can do from home.

But I miss the people in office the most.

I miss laughing at stories I hear every Monday morning on what people got up to on the weekend.
I miss fracking off for a cup of coffee for a good 20mins when I can do it in 10. I miss giving the GWS supporter shit and him giving me the same.
I miss whinging about so and so and hoping they get inflamed boils because they're a self righteous campaigner.
I miss when having a day off work was actually exciting

I’m rediscovering the joys of the simple things in life, reconnecting with my beautiful family, realising that before COVID I was trapped in an insane hamster wheel of work and consumption and ego and self-indulgence, and now enjoying the peace and quiet and clean air, genuinely heartened that a lot of others seem to be having the same sort of personal epiphany, and schitte scared about the big picture.

No, I think he’s a once in a century kind of phenomenon. The energy he has on hand to devote every waking hour to manoeuvering and conniving and plotting to destroy his “enemies” (because they are everyone, and no-one), the willingness he displays to pursue vendettas when he should be running the country, is beyond parallel, except maybe if you compare him to a Mafia boss. Tell pop to rewatch The Office, took me a while to "get it", now I think both versions of it are brilliant, though I favour the American one as just looking at Steve Carrell makes me laugh.

In Australia today (and I stress today!) there is no requirement for masks

I think if we stay the course for now we'll beat the virus sooner than we think. It's not incremental as though the number of cases will drop by one person each day. If the social distancing is maintained it will drop the same rate as it increased, so just as it spread fairly rapidly, I'd expect the decline in cases to be just as rapid.

I got this from a bloke on CNN now keep in mind he was on television to basically slam Trump and emphasise the importance of social distancing, but if you think about it his logic does make sense.

We won't beat the viurs, we'll learn how to live with it... protecting the vulnerable as best we can, ensuring that only a limited number of people have it at any one time.

Until such time as a vaccine is developed, that's the best we can do... and that's assuming that the vaccine will work on all three current versions (mutated twice so far) and any future mutations...

The Government will always put the health of the people first, as it is the best way to protect the economy in the long term. Make no mistake, if the virus gets out of control, the hit to the economy will be much, much worse...

When the govt talks about restrictions until at least September, they are not talking about the current level of restrictions but any level of restrictions. I would be surprised to see pubs, clubs, entertainment venues etc open to the public prior to September. I'll be absolutely amazed if we allow unrestricted travel through our borders any time this year...

I agree football will be back in May/June, with no crowds. The teams will need time to do a mini pre-season before games commence. No crowds at all this year.

Small shops will reopen gradually, with probably trades, manufacturing and that type of thing first.

I'll be really interested to see how the import/export business is managed...

What about the consequences of not re-opening? I suggest following Michael Burry on Twitter (as swansfan51 suggested a few pages back) for his excellent analysis of the long-term effects of shutting down the economy. One of our regular posters, Millky, has lost his livelihood over this. The medical experts are there to advise the president about health risks and must be taken seriously, but it is the president's job to weigh up all the risks. I'm not going to go down the Trump rabbit hole either King, but this is one thing he does get (IMO).

I understand the consequences of not reopening, and totally agree with your opinions on Michael Burry, but I'm not satisfied that he has all the facts, and I'm 100% sure that that is not how our country, possibly any country is run... In Australia, we are still using the 'trickle down' method/model/whatever and saying it works, FFS!

If we were talking about business only, I'd be more inclined to follow him... but not with my country.

Research out of Hong Kong confirms what has been the thinking. Covid 19 survived longer and is more virulent in colder weather. So as we head into winter with people already talking about lifting lockdowns we are at most risk. Already many of the young are ‘over it’ and so I foresee as our numbers look to be optimistic that complacency and irreverence and wilful disobedience are going to become a massive problems during winter if not already.

The reaction of scomo, Murphy and Chant give me some comfort that they won’t play Russian roulette with lives as some are now advocating so at least I expect lockdowns will remain unaltered throughout winter and that position would only change if there were repeat zero new cases for a week perhaps two ie by complete eradication which now should be the realistic aim.

My view is we should increase rather than decrease lockdowns with a view at short term eradication. There are numerous places with nil new cases now spanning days or weeks. I note that SA as a state has had nil new cases for several days in a row so seemingly they are already on cusp of eradication as a state. My location Central Coast of NSW has had no change to case numbers for a week approx. So as I go shopping with my N95 mask firmly in place and newly purchased protection glasses I will no longer be petrified of irresponsible young people being disrespectful of my personal space as has been. That being the case if I feel the need to verbalise an irresponsible person who does then I will no longer hold my tongue and will heavily shame them. Been tempted several times already. If that is the civic duty I can offer to change the occasional isolated value system for the better then I’ll be proud to do so

Following that media report (posted by Ticky I think- thanks Ticky!) that zinc throat lozenges together with hyroxycloroquine and antibiotics produced a near 100% successful treatment in 700 New Yorkers I’ve also added those zinc chewable tablets to my arsenal- not easy to find i might add. Importantly as I understand zinc not only helps immune eradicate viral load in the throat but also provides a mechanism that ‘taps the brake’ on excessive immune response so helps prevent ARDS. So does Berberine and turmeric both having anti inflammatory properties

I was doing Bioglan Immunoforce which has now become nigh impossible to purchase. In its place I’ve included Andrographis which is principal ingredient (500 g powder on order) due this week. That natural herb has been shown in study of Covid 19 to inhibit enzymes on which Covid 19 relies and is thought to offer barriers to replication at least in principle so the study concluded. Good enough for me

I don’t know what others do but I daily log into Worldodometer and check our stats against other countries. We started out in position 17 and now through success we are position 35 on number of cases. We are near the peak of successful countries but there was one in particular quite a bit more successful with similar case numbers- UAE. So I did some research as to their treatment choices. Apparently they enlisted the aid of Sourh Korea to access convalescent plasma of survivors and that has been their treatment. They have 37 deaths and 1 serious case with almost identical case numbers as us more than 6000. Like WOW. That’s a death rate of 0.5% approx and that excludes Asymptomatic in the community so is even more impressive. Use of convalescent plasma has historically been used for numerous pandemics. I’m thinking it will likely be best treatment option in the long run and if those UAE results are replicated it means it will become no worse than the seasonal flu. A limiting factor of course is accessing enough people in recovery to have sufficient stocks. I hope that someone in AUST is asking people who’ve recovered to come forward

Yeah, I agree. I was listening to a podcast by Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) and he made the point that he wouldn't want his federal government (or any federal government) to be put in the position where they have to decide how many of its citizens will die. The federal government's responsibility is to protect its citizens. His argument was essentially that decisions about when to open up should be in the hands of the states, who are in a better position to make those kinds of calls. The federal government's role would be more to make sure the states have the support they need and to provide guidance. Ideally, this would prevent someone like Trump from exercising too much power (no matter what he might say on Twitter), as Nassim Taleb explains here:



Our country is a lot different - while we are also a federation, we are a lot smaller, with significantly fewer states, so the federal government can do more.
However, the federal government still needs to be guided by the states as well as the people, as they don't have absolute authority to continue shutdowns for longer than is needed.

China is a completely different case, the government has a lot more control, so the people basically have to do whatever they say. (This actually worked to their advantage, as they had the capacity to enforce stricter lockdowns. But I don't know if I'd want our country to be run that way. Personally, I think we have a pretty good system.)
