States keeping borders closed with a handful of cases has no legal justification anymore. It’s now costing thousands of jobs in the hospitality industry. Poor leadership and decision making by the states.

The hypocrisy is that if you’re a mining billionaire you can wander in and out of a state without the 14 day quarantine period.

They are damned if they do and don’t though. This thing is bigger than one industry. If they go on the safe side just to be sure that’s fine with me.

I don't think it is a bad idea for WA to keep their borders closed. If they don't have any local transmissions they can loosen their social restrictions quicker which helps their economy. Like the way NT has had less restrictions due to their isolation and lower cases.

There is still regular untraced community transmission in NSW and Victoria. So that is still a real threat. So better to wait and see if they get an increase in infections when they loosen social restrictions.

In the US, there was a lot of spread from the epicentre in New York to all their other states just from domestic travel.

Actually 4 days straight in NSW on high testing without any community transmission.......but understand the ethos.

I am happiest with solitude.

How are you going Ticky009 ?
I'm good mate. Better yet the family & friends are all okay. Hope yours are the same.

Still working from home. And when I eventually do, work have the following procedures in place.
1) Temp checks when entering building. Anyone above 37.5 gets sent home
2) Social distancing in office & meetings still enforced
3) zero tolerance for any type of illness & coming to work

My main issue will be public transport as I don't drive.

No, it just means hundreds of thousands of Australians having their lives and livelihoods destroyed, losing their homes, and about 500 million people worldwide moving into extreme poverty.

Everything will be fine.

Prophets of doom everywhere. But is that the reality? A conversation with small business client yesterday.

He received

- Jobkeeper at $3k a mth for 6 mths
- fed cash flow assist at $20k spanning 6 mths
- seeking a govt grant for min further $10k nsw govt

So about $50k when his loss (drop in turnover) is about $25k and to profit of about $12k. That’s right he profits and he’s not alone.

Or perhaps a second client who earns about $25k a year business but part time because his wife earns $350k a year. He pays himself a wage of $10k a year. He goes slower in his work so there is a 30% drop off ($10k) so he can earn $18k for doing nothing yet family income greater than last year

There is a tendency I’m afraid to knee jerk overstate the downside risk without proper micro and macro analysis of the objective reality of this predicament. Some will be hurt but most will have a temporary hiccup is all and some will be better off

And the sun will come up tomorrow

Spoke to a few people today who have lost work and aren’t getting assistance , hopeful to get some job seeker

One cancelled their sons 13th birthday gift

But I’ve told them two people have made out like bandits and the sun will come up tomorrow so they are all happy now

Given the ACT has been virus free for over 3 weeks (no active cases, only one of the 107 cases were ever untraced) without closed borders, and also that some places like the Central Coast and Bendigo have had no cases recently, I'm not convinced the border closures themselves have done much compared to the rest of the lockdown rules. We're virus free because if you can't do non-essential travel, that rules out most intercity travel, regardless of whether there's a literally closed border between you and there. And certainly, with most flights cancelled due to lack of demand, there's not gonjna be many people frivolously flying long distances when everything is under lockdown.

They all need a wife who makes $350k. Problem solved.

That’s good no use wallowing in self pity. Go to the beach and watch the sunrise and make that his birthday gift....or download a free computer game .......or give him a homemade gift certificate about what he will get when available. Own your predicament be positive and take steps. Love is an easy and most valuable gift. Do something for them.

So they’ve applied for job seeker. did they go to their bank for a temporary extension until job seeker comes through? Did they approach salvos for a food hamper? Organise a garage sale? you can whinge and wallow or you can be proactive and positive. Simple really.

No one has entitlement to anything in life.

It’s pretty clear to see who has a sense of entitlement and never had to do it tough. Spit a dummy because someone takes your toy away. Honestly.

Weren't you threatening everyone on this board with legal action no less than 3 weeks ago?

A livelihood which will in short term be replaced with job seeker which will upon 3-6 mths convert to new employment with old work or new. You own your predicament. Good start

And yeah I’ve pretty much went about 5 years doing many of the things I’ve mentioned trying to pay down massive debt with insufficient income under constant threat of bankruptcy raising 3 kids trying to prevent too much damage from a mentally ill and physically and emotionally abusive ex all the while trying to protect my kids with support of Docs as it was then. you can whinge and whine or you get on with what you need to do making compromises and sacrifices being adaptable and committed but always positive because that’s the only way you you will get through. So yes suck it up

You do realise that jobseeker benefit could be less than the wage the now unemployed person was getting, not to mention that in 5 months time it will halve, at the same time that banks will cut the loan holiday.

You'd want to hope that your optimistic view that they'll simply find a new job in 3 to 6 months comes true.

I'm amazed this thread is still going... Isn't dwelling on it driving you crazy?

Anyway, I hope you're fit and well and not living on the streets... 16 days to go! :)
