Because states run the health care system administration I guess?
Need a section 122 expert

I'm not an expert but my understanding is the federal government can step in during extreme measures.

A very quick look I found this "Section 51(ix) of the Constitution provides that the Commonwealth can pass laws for the peace, order and good government of the Commonwealth with respect to quarantine. The quarantine power has primarily been relied upon in the area of public health. Public health ranges from the regulation of disease prevention to the regulation of tobacco and alcohol. The scope of this power remains uncertain"

we could possibly go full lockdown l

Yeah more measures

because the current ones work so well

why don’t they just chain everyone up?

does anyone actually know anyone with covid ?

what else is there to lockdown really?

End of the day scomo isn’t a courageous leader so he won’t ever take control anyway

I don’t know anyone with it
I know 2 people with it.
I am really annoyed because I have been working from home since mid-March and only been going out if absolutely necessary. I've done that because I want this thing to be over ASAP and I couldn't give a flying one who has made mistakes or what in the past, i just want it finished. I'm trying to do my part but there are some people who feel they have more rights than anybody else and they have made it worse.
And do you know what? I don't care if the government has the right or not to tell us to stay at home or to wear a mask. I just want to get this thing under control and life back to as close to normal as possible.
I don't care who made mistakes, or if it was Labor or Liberal. That can be sorted out later. I don't care if Dan didn't isolate the hotels properly, because it wasn't him who disobeyed instructions and spread it in the first place.
Finally, I don't care about all of the finger- pointing and political point scoring, I just want it to be over and then we can deal with all of that. For God's sake I'm so tired of irrelevant opinions that divides everyone.
Sorry about the rant. I've been inside for nearly 5 months now and I hear the same old crap I've heard since the beginning.
And don't forget to smile :)

Its hasnt even been a week of stage 4, technically it hasnt even been a day because the bsuinesses are still open until tomorrow. It takes a few weeks for any changes to reflect in data because of incubation periods.

No doubt but I’m in the construction industry and builders have been working out ways to get by

telling ya now from a construction industry it won’t change much , still working

Alarming figures from DHHS https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-covid-19-daily-update

And we know very little abour long term consequences. I'm mid 20s, if I get the virus it looks like the worst case scenario is I'm bed ridden for a week or in the hospital for a few days and back home again.

But we are seeing evidence that it damages organs and that damage may be permanent. Yeah I might only be sick for a week, but who know if it destroys my heart or lungs where it might shave 10 years off my life expectancy later on.

Who knows? I aint ****ing with it.

Daily cases stablising and looking like they're beginning to decline. Masks and/or Stage 4 showing in the numbers now. It's working.

Just need to avoid a huge amount of complacency that will eventually come.

Personally I Would like to see the long term unemployment, homes lost, suicide figures , loss of GDP, gross debt etc before its declared a success, seen as we really have conflicting information on what actual link there is to stage 4 and other measures the numbers

Monday’s are always lower anyway

Maybe this will work too stop singing

People who use a "loud voice" or burst "into song" are more likely to spread the coronavirus, NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant says.

Dr Chant was asked on Monday why some COVID-19 clusters like the Thai Rock spread wildly, while in other cases an infected person may have visited a venue without passing the virus to others.

"It isn't about the virus, it's often about the behaviours, settings and how infectious people are at the time," Dr Chant said

I can provide some, but not all, of these figures for you.

Suicides are 1,200 since March compared to 300 for the virus (https://7news.com.au/the-morning-sh...arming-rate-of-suicide-in-australia-c-1221236.

If you extrapolate Sweden's deaths (no lockdown) to Australia's population, it would equate to 14,000 deaths. If there is an increase in gross debt of circa 400 billion that equates to about $28 million per life. The comparison is obviously not ideal at this point because we are too early in the process, Sweden has also seen a drop in GDP. Check back in 12-18 months for better data.

Sweden is an interesting case, like the deaths here I havent seen much context, and raising that is usually taken as a desire to sacrifice people or not caring, However considering life has been shut down I think its important to be clear if people are dying who shouldnt versus people who most likely died soon anyway (still awfully sad when anyone dies)

Sweden has a decreasing death rate and case load, wonder if they just ripped the banaid and others just delay the inevitable

I remember we shutdown to avoid overcrowding hospitals and to then avoid the 100 thousand deaths that would cause

suddenly now we seem to be desperately worried each time theres a positive case, despite basically testing perfectly healthy people

we seem desperate to even lock NSW down further, f knows why

Article on Sweden. They are more bullish on recovering.

Auckland has gone to Stage 3 restrictions after 4 new cases

Ridiculous isn’t it

I was surprised that they would go back to restrictions so quickly. Cases are going to pop up from time to time. NSW has been reporting new cases each day but they seem to be able to manage it.

Source? Not doubting you, I like stats

It's scary that NZLD had "eliminated" the virus and now can't trace where the infected people have been infected. That's just so scary. Particularly given how much they have done to prevent it and the incubation period for the virus... These people, given no contact points to a potentially positive case (i.e. a traveller, new arrival etc)... it is assumed that they (by all theoretical means) "shouldn't" have been infected; But have been.

A "new source risk", despite the current restrictions, could lead to a severe, deadly and (given the unknown source) uncontrollable wave of infections even despite the sacrifice they have already made to prevent that. They have taken the hardline approach and it's worked thus far. For all that to unravel now would be devastating in so many respects.

None-the-less, it's my understanding, the best way to stop the spread of the virus is to prevent the physical spread of people who pass on the virus. It really is pretty simple... And I hope we see the numbers start to come down in Victoria soon to prove that lockdown does work*

* when people choose to (or are forced to) actually follow the rules and do the right thing for a limited period of time.

Like most things, a system is only as good as the people using it
