Any one of a thousand plodders can win the Melbourne Cup but only the best horses can win the Cox plate.

Sunline should win by 5 lengths if given a clear run - could be a very rough race.

COX PLATE

1. Sky Heights (awesome win last start)
2. Sunline (greatest race-mare of all time)
3. Testa Rossa (could cause an upset)

GEELONG CUP

who cares?

Well, I was right about ONE thing.

Sunline is, without any doubt, THE greatest race-mare of all time.

Sky Heights missed the start and got caught wide all the way.

And there was never going to be an upset.

Until today I thought Might and Power was the greatest racehorse this country had ever seen ... but even Might and Power, at his best, would have struggled to beat Sunline today.

sunline is just an awesome horse, there are no words to describe how great it is

but might and power was just something else, perhaps comparing the two would be like comparing them to pharlap or steve waugh to bradman

out of interest does anyone know what pharlap ran the mile at as compared to today???

how good a horse is diatribe though, what a great race it had, i got two legs of the trifecta, close but as they say, no cigar, could diatribe be a good cup chance????

My records show that Phar Lap ran 1 min 59.25 sec in winning the 1930 Cox Plate. He then ran 2 min 1.5 sec winning the race again in 1931.

Unfortunately, my records do not say the exact distance of the race at the time. It certainly wouldn't have been "the mile", as you put it. Those times would be much too slow for a quality miler.

Traditionally the Cox Plate was run over 10 furlongs (i.e. a mile and a quarter) but times prior to 1943 were consistently a few seconds quicker than they were after 1943, which tends to suggest that the distance in Phar Lap's day might have been a bit shorter than the 10 furlongs.

In any case, comparison of times from one era to another doesn't really prove anything. Different types of racing surface, different track conditions, different types of performance-enhancing chemicals and different styles of racing from one era to the next make such comparisons useless.

It's a bit like the comparison you mention of Steve Waugh to Bradman. If you go purely on runs scored, you'd have to say that Bradman was far superior. But don't forget that Steve Waugh has played his cricket in an era of extremely high-quality fielding. In Bradman's day there wasn't the same emphasis on fielding that there is today.

It's because of the influence of one-day cricket in the modern era. These days a top quality cover fieldsman could mean the difference of 30 or 40 runs to the score in a limited overs match. Such a player would be worth his place in the side even if he couldn't bat or bowl to save his life. There just weren't those sorts of super fieldsmen around in Bradman's time.

Another good example of useless comparisons over different eras is all that hoo-ha that surrounded Tony Lockett breaking Gordon Coventry's goal-kicking record. Again, it's a useless comparison. Footy was a completely different game in Coventry's era.

But for a mare to win a Cox Plate in any era is a great achievement. To win two in a row makes her undisputably a champion. BUT to absolutely brain the opposition the way Sunline did today is something I don't think we'll ever see again.

I was there the day Might And Power won the Cox Plate. And it was a great moment for sure. I was also there the day he won the Caulfield Cup by a similar margin to what Sunline won by today. And I remember thinking at the time that I was watching the most awesome display of galloping I had ever seen. I'm pleased to say that I was also there to see Sunline win her first Cox Plate.

Unfortunately, I have to confess I wasn't there today. I had to watch it on TV. I would have loved to have been in the crowd to cheer her home today, even though my money would have probably been on Sky Heights.

Sometimes you've just gotta be there.

The Geelong Cup didnt get much coverage over west, how important is this race - like is it the 3rd biggest after the Melbourne and Caufield Cup or what?

GoEagles,

Ha Ha Ha.

The Geelong Cup is just a good quality provincial handicap. It doesn't even come close to the Melbourne or Caulfield Cups. It's probably like your Bunbury Cup or something. There would be at least a hundred races on the Victorian racing calendar more important than the Geelong Cup.
