Re: Create an AFL Guernsey (3)

Ive seen a few teal clashes for Port, which I personally dont want to see, but this might be a good pre-season alternative.

Re: Create an AFL Guernsey (3)

Ive just been reading a book called Urge to Merge by Ian and John Ridley. It is about the almost merger of Melbourne and Hawthorn in 1996 from the perspective of then Melbourne President, Ian Ridley.

In the early part of the book it explains a couple of the merger attempts that Melbourne encountered in 1986/87. These were North Melbourne, Richmond and Fitzroy. The Melbourne/Fitzroy merger got as far as deciding on a name, Melbourne Lions, who would be on the board and a jumper design.

Ridley say the main reason about it not being announced already was Fitzroy asked to hold off until they found our how much money they made at the door of a gala they were running. Ridley and others decided if their clubs future was hanging on what Fitzroy took at the door they didnt want to be involved, so pulled out before the anouncement was made.

Here's the jumper design that Ridley describes in the book, he says it looked like the current Brisbane Lions design (book was written in 2001)

Im sorry if this is common knowlege but its news to me, I was 5 years old in 1996.
Thanks for staying with me on that long winded lead up. :)

and screw you guys that didnt
Very interesting Ganty, had no idea this got that far! good looking jumper actually

Re: Create an AFL Guernsey (3)

Mmmm...I thought so.

Im almost finished the book now because I forgot about it now I need something to do/read while Im on the bus, going to work.

There was an interesting quote taken from one of the people that was heavily involved in the Melboure/Hawthorn merger about a jumper signifing the history of a club and how that was changing around about the time the book was written in 2001. Im try and find it after.

Also I recommend that anyone thats interested in football history read the book, Urge to Merge, by Ian and John Ridley, Im almost finished it and it has been a great read.

Yeah I might have a look down at the local library, I'm always up for a good read if it's to do with sport.

What a joke, nowhere to be found on the Geelong Regional Library servers as well as on Amazon or eBay. Sounds like a great read but I don't know where I could find it.

Yeh I got mine at the local library, although that was it pretty much in the way of VFL/AFL books.

Couple of hour drive to Melbourne, isnt it?? Dunno how often you go into Melbourne but you could try the Melbourne Sate Library, or something along those lines.

Yeah they have it listed at the State Library but I really only get into Melbourne for the footy or cricket as it is 1 and 1/2 hours away. Ah well I'll try my best and look around.

Two guernseys I've been working on:

GWS guernsey I made whilst the 'Double Blues' idea was floating around.

Richmond Clash Guernsey with a bit more of a 'clash' feel to it.

They don't have to - if a sash isn't stitched on like 110 years' prior, then it can go any which way if that's the intended design. But it'd look crap :D

Looks alright but just a tip, leave the outline in grey as it just looks better.

Re: Create an AFL Guernsey (3)

Something I've been tossing around in my head for a while...

I believe Sydney's kit is in dire need of an update. The huge difference between front and back (white front, red back; hence doesn't look good with white shorts), the inconsistent yoke angle and lack of the swan/tip of V (which leaves it looking like a Sydney Opera House tourist shirt) has always irked me.

The simple addition of two red stripes at the front and one white on the back balances the colours, while respecting the old South Melbourne (1905-6 jumper). The addition of the swan completes the sharp V motif.

The result is an updated and refined version of the 1997-8 preseason strip (which is highly underrated IMO).

My away/clash kit is pretty straightforward; interesting to note that the first ever side panels were used as a design feature in Sydney's early relocation jumpers.

Re: Create an AFL Guernsey (3)

As always Smeagle, top work :thumbsu:

The home jumper look refreshing. I agree with you (and most other people on here) that the red/white ratio isn't right and it is probably the perfect time to change it now that Sydney will be wearing white shorts next year.

Just on the clash, the small middle red stripe on the back isn't really doing it for me. I prefer how they have it at the moment, with the two ends of the V on the back.
