I find it hard to go past one of the most enduring, most re-invented, characters - King Arthur.
Arthur is surely one of the great fictional influences on the western world. And, yes, while somewhere deep in the poriginal myth there may have been some historical truth, Arthur himself is almost certainly fictional and all trace of history is gone from modern interpretations.

Robin Hood would also have to be up there.

Not one, that I can see anyway, Shakespearian character. King Lear, Lady MacBeth, Hamlet, all brilliant tragic characters, lesser known but brilliant comic roles like Toby Belch and Andrew Agucheek in Twelfth Night. Dude knew how to wield a pen well.

In fairness, in my list I said their were about 20 Shakespeare characters you could name (more actually now that I think about it).

I was assuming that the Histories and plays like Julius Caesar and Anthony and Cleopatra were at least in part non-fiction.
Maybe another look at Richard III might not be a bad idea in light of recent events.

This new "competition" is ruining the thread.
At least we're back to showing classic, decade spanning characters as opposed to favourites who won't be known in half a decade.
