Cricket Articles

I'm not sure a thread about this specific match would be worth it, so I decided to broaden it out just in case I again find an interesting article about cricket out there on the internets one day in the future.

Anyway I enjoyed this article in The Guardian on England v South Africa, Headingly 1998 so I thought I'd share it.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/jul/04/england-south-africa-1998-the-spin

Favourite line: “This is an impatient age, weaned on instant entertainment,” wrote our own David Hopps, who must love the world now if he felt like that in 1998"

Much like Michael Bevan on New Years Day 1996, I'm refusing to give up on what seems a lost cause here.

This one's from Cricinfo, a bit of a look at how Richie worked to get where he got

http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/content/story/859731.html

Favourite line: "While so many within and without the game will say how much they loved and admired Benaud's work, precious few can be said to have made a genuine fist of following his example".

Also, I'm pretty sure I had that test programme there in the background of this pic, from memory it was Dean Jones' head superimposed on the body of Victor Trumper from that famous photo of him.

Oh it's a good idea for a thread for sure.

Read an excellent one by Kimber recently on watching the Root-Williamson-Smith-Kohli quartet:

For less technical, but more of interesting stories and anecdotes cricinfo's The Cricket Monthly is pretty much unsurpassed for quality. Enjoyed the recent one about Matthew Nicholson's brief test career and also was a good one on Kolpak's the other day.

The Guardian usually has one to two a week that are great to delve into as well.

You're right about the guide, I picked one up the other week, Deano as Trumper. They published an enormous amount of tour guides back in those days compared to now, in the 1984/85 no less than nine different tour guides where available for that summer of cricket.

Jarrod Kimber's T20 analysis is a good a quality as there is, generally in these some writers go overboard with stats and eyes start to glaze over but he finds the right balance between meaningful anecdotes and the data.

Series on the types of T20 sides:

Good piece in today's Graund.
I also liked the Wisden article about Jeff Thomson that was linked in the Guardian one, about a grade match in 1973.
