Silly Gilly talking up 20k for the game tonight, doesn't really look like it so far!

Actually take that back, crowd looks great!
19k tickets pre sold. Top deck looking pretty full.

Sounding good on the broadcast. Whats the division of the crowd? Lots of Heat fans or is there a lot of neutral?

Cricket Australia must be so confused by the Gold Coast market. One week ago we looked a long way off with two pretty ordinary crowds at Metricon but tonight's game looks like it's close to a sell out and would be considered a very respectable crowd by BBL standards. Fingers crossed they are willing to take a chance on us!

Bloody great turn out tonight.
I said at half time it looked around 20-22k.

too bad the Heat batsman didn't show up

Yeah, terrible by Heat. Should have been easy to chase down, but the collapse happened.
But good turnout. I guess people do like sports on the coast. (a little tongue in cheek given you hear the opposite), and a like a friend of mine pointed out earlier, when suns are up and about (2014 - before Ablett did his shoulder) the stadium was sold out a fair bit. Or at least got a decent crowd, so when the suns start coming regularly, I think the stadium will get filled once again.

It looks like you might be right! The January 1st fixture last year pulled a good crowd (17k) and last night we had a record crowd of 20k+ so that definitely backs the theory. What's obvious is that a local team needs to be involved to pull a decent crowd. The same thing would happen 10-15 years ago in the AFL when we'd get good crowds for Lions games and not so great crowds for Kangaroos games.

Im down at Pac Fair now and was at Broadbeach this morning. There are so many people on holidays.
We definitely could sustain a team.
Imagine if we had the light rail running down Hooker Blvd and connected Metricon to both Pac Fair and the Star casino! Accessibility to the stadium is preventing us from regularly pulling good crowds. Anyone who has ever been to Metricon Stadium knows it's a hassle to get there and that's a deterrent that we could really do without.

Yeah I would have it from pac fair down the route that is used for the bus then it can finish at Nerang station

Do the Suns get anything out of these cricket events staged at Metricon e.g. money?
I believe so. We have management rights with a 'clean' stadium deal which essentially means we can profit from other events being held at Metricon but also have to wear the costs if we are unable to secure other events.

Nice to see the stadium being used for a Cricket Australia XI v England Lions fixture today. Extra special to see local Max Bryant playing well in that game with 102 runs from 60 balls.

February seems to be the sweet spot where cricket, footy and muscial concerts all overlap at Metricon.

The Gabba has been confirmed as the host venue of the 2020 AFL grand final but Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium is poised to share in what is being billed as a festival of footy.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said it was a possibility Metricon Stadium would be used in this season’s finals ahead of the premiership decider on October 24

Cricket Australia were searching for venues to host the WBBL, set to run from October 17 to November 29, in recent months.

Because the Suns AFL club had moved to reserve Metricon Stadium for finals and couldn’t provide clarity around when the AFL season would finish, Cricket Australia had to look elsewhere.

“There was some discussion with Cricket Australia around how they were going to conduct their WBBL and BBL season,” Suns CEO Mark Evans said.

“We informed the AFL that we have reserved the venue for them so they have complete flexibility across the whole finals series.

“We are hoping the highest placed team will be able to select the venue for their matches, in which case that would stand Metricon Stadium in really good stead to get at least a final and maybe more.

“The teams based on the Gold Coast, particularly those teams who have already played well at Metricon Stadium, will see they may have an advantage by playing here.”
