Media reports that an all rounder could be added to the squad.

Have we not learnt from inventing one with Marsh and Watson.

Is anyone saying pick me?

Starc averages more than any recent #6.

Pick Head ... he can bowl and has succeeded at ODI level for Australia.
There's a problem with your suggestion - it's too logical, and the selectors have given clear indication that logic isn't something they're interested in. Expect Moises Henriques to replace Peter Handscomb on Boxing Day TIC.

Highest fourth innings totals
Team Score Target Overs RR Result Opposition Ground Match Date Scorecard
England 654/5 696 218.2x8 2.24 draw v South Africa Durban 3 Mar 1939 Test # 271
New Zealand 451 550 93.3 4.82 lost v England Christchurch 13 Mar 2002 Test # 1594
South Africa 450/7 458 136.0 3.30 draw v India Johannesburg 18 Dec 2013 Test # 2108
Pakistan 449/9 490 144.2 3.11 - v Australia Brisbane 15 Dec 2016 Test # 2240

Shit I dont remember the SAF v Ind result from 3 years ago and the Yahpees falling 8 runs short of the win.
They were 5/400 from 122 overs with de Villiers and du Plessis unbeaten on tons but they lost de Villiers, du Plessis and Duminy and only scored 50 in the last 14 overs. There was another recently like that where a country had a great chance but slowed down and were a few runs short at the end. I couldn't find this one as it wasn't a record but I recall that the posters in this thread were pretty scathing as there seemed no reason for shutting up shop.

Just done the maths: across 5 first innings against England, India scored a total of 2750 runs, at an imposing average of 550. Good luck to our bowlers, as they strive to take 20 wickets in a match.

The first day of the First Test clashes with St. Kilda v Port at Etihad. Tough choice as to what I should watch :)

Who sez Mitch Marsh is a protected species...?

WA’s Hilton Cartwright set for surprise Boxing Day call-up

Hilton Cartwright is set for a shock Boxing Day Test debut after being added to the squad that will take on Pakistan at the MCG next week.

A month after the national selectors showed their hand by including him in the one-day squad to take on New Zealand, the West Australian all-rounder was called up to the Test squad this morning as doubts rise over the capacity of speedsters Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood to overcome their heavy workload in the first Test.

Starc and Hazlewood each bowled 56 overs at the Gabba.

Australia have been eager to identify a top order batsman capable of bowling solid medium pacers with Cartwright likely to replace Nic Maddinson who has scored just five runs in his three innings since making his debut against South Africa at Adelaide this month.

Looks like Maddinson has kept his spot on the team, A handful of runs and a dropped catch is enough of a good game to warrant re-selection.
That was always going to happen. The New South Wales syndrome is alive and well.

Thought the same thing myself, ever since Watson we have this fixation with playing an all rounder. The only problem is we do not have a Test class all rounder and what is more Australia does not have a record of producing Test class all rounders. Henriques' name was also mentioned in this morning's press but he has an injury.

So who gets dropped to make way for this all rounder? Bird I suppose.

Hilton Cartwright...in big form .... not!

The highly-rated 24yo has struck 330 runs at 36.66 and taken four wickets @ 74.75 in five Sheffield Shield games for the Warriors this summer.

Even he just said is bowling isnt good ... faak

England still trailing by 125 with 6 wickets left and 33 overs to be bowled. A collapse is always possible but a draw looks pretty certain. There are still quite a few people betting on the Indian win with odds of 3.75 and the draw is 1.29.

England all out 207 after being 0 for 103. Is it in the rules to boycott an upcoming tour, due to the anticipated cruel and inhumane treatment of your players? :)
0/103 and then 4/192 with Ali and Stokes still in. England's first innings of 477 was also the largest that has resulted in an innings defeat. There are ten test matches where a team scored more than 477 in the first innings and lost, but none of them by an innings.

Cartwright has the batting but his bowling is suspect. Maybe Maddinson will be 12th and Cartwright bat at no6 ? Australia would not lose much batting wise and we would add an extra bowler to the attack but maybe that is too logical?

Apparently Cartwright has 4 wickets this season at 74 runs per wicket, so I wouldn't be backing him to cause carnage on the Pakistani middle order. At best he'd be hopefully tying up one end and keeping it tight for a few overs, while the regular bowlers have a bit of a spell.

At least the selectors are opting for a batsman who can bowl a bit like the old days when Australia had Bobby Simpson, Bob Cowper, Doug Walters, Greg Chappell or Alan Border to name a few who could all roll the arm over. None of those guys were ever going to run through the opposition but they were known partnership breakers and pretty useful batsmen.

I would sooner a batsman who can take the odd wicket than a bowler the selectors are trying to make into a middle order batsman. The latter approach did not work for Inverarity or Marsh with Watson or Mitchell Marsh so it is good to see Trevor Hohns opting for someone with some batting ability.

Starc 38 overs, Hazelwood 42, Bird 33 in the 4th innings of 1st test bowled on Sunday and Monday is why the selectors want a batsman who can bowl medium pace. They aren't going to play Sayers at the MCG and rest Bird and Melbourne will be flatter than Brisbane.

SA's decision to field after winning the toss looks like a bust with the Heat 0/90 after 8 overs. Pierson could have been run out at 6 but Laughlin missed the stumps by miles and McCullum was dropped off Pollard's first over.
EDIT : Pollard has just taken 2 wickets in 2 balls, both Pierson and Pollard are out and the score is 2/80 after 8.2.
