Sri Lanka 531 v Bangers March 2024 in Chittagong, highest scores Kusal Mendis 93, Kamindu Mendis 92 not out. #10 and #11 were both out and only made 6 and 0 respectively, 9 players got to double figures. 6 scores of 50+. Sri Lanka won by 192 runs.Australia score 500+ without a player making a century. Has that happened before?
The FOXTEL commentary team mentioned that it was the first time every Australian batsman had made it to double figures in a single Test innings since 1992 but a score of 500+ without a century maker was not mentioned while I was watching.
That maybe one for REH to answer.
Some excellent stats there REH.Sri Lanka 531 v Bangers March 2024 in Chittagong, highest scores Kusal Mendis 93, Kamindu Mendis 92 not out. #10 and #11 were both out and only made 6 and 0 respectively, 9 players got to double figures. 6 scores of 50+. Sri Lanka won by 192 runs.
India 9/dec 524 v NZ November 1976 in Kanpur, highest score was 70 by Mohinder Amarnath all up 6 scores of 50+, Bishen Bedi was 50 not out and the worst #11 ever Bhagwat Chandrasekhar got to 10 not out, so everyone got to double figures. A Draw.
Oz 7/dec 521 v WI in Perth December 2009, highest scores Katich 99, Watson 89 all up 5 scores of 50+. Hauritz 2 not out was only single figure. Oz won by 35 runs.
South Africa 517 v Oz in Adelaide 1998, highest score Brian McMillian 87 not out, 5 scores of 50+ and Jonty Rhodes made 6 and was only player not to make double figures - out for 6. A draw.
Today's 511 by Oz is 5th on the list. Starc's 77 was highest score and everyone made double figures and 5 scores 50+.
India's Dilip Doshi must be right up there among the worst ever. In the last Test in Adelaide, I vaguely remember him edging a ball through slips in 1977 - his first runs of the series. Some excellent stats there REH.
When I was a young bloke during the West Indie's tour in 1960-61 I can recall their spinner Alf Valentine being described as the worst test batsman ever so I checked his batting average, which was 141 runs at 4.70 and marginally better than Chandrasekhar (who had polio as a kid resulting in a withered arm) with his 167 runs at 4.07.
While I was checking Chandra's stats NZ's Chris Martin the `Walking Wicket ' and his 123 test runs at 2.36 got a mention, apparently they are the only two test players in history who scored less runs than wickets taken.
There was some pretty useless low order batsman in the old days, from memory did Jim Higgs tour the UK and never made a run?India's Dilip Doshi must be right up there among the worst ever. Starc definitely showed up the Pommy top order - he was brilliant. Just hand him the man of the series award now. There was some pretty useless low order batsman in the old days, from memory did Jim Higgs tour the UK and never made a run?
Anyway those days are pretty well over as everyone is expected to be able to bat these days.
Watching Starc yesterday he looked like a very competent middle order batsman.
About an hour after I posted I thought I'd check to see if anyone actually has a worse record than Chandra and saw Martin's record, but I only saw him bat a handful of times and have forgotten about him. Some excellent stats there REH.
