Yep.
Carey, Warne, Tiger, Andrew Johns - Smith will be amongst esteemed atheletes to have fallen on their sword

Yep, and compare what Smith's guilty of compared to those other blokes. He simply failed to recognise the stupidity of the ball tampering plan and say "not on my watch you don't!"

In the long term this will be a minor stain on an otherwise magnificent career in his case I suspect.

Should never have come to this. Dumb on so many levels as has been discussed adnauseum on here.
I would have given him 9 months and brought him back at the conclusion of the Sydney test. Let him watch a home series from the stands and then unleash the hunger in the shorter game.

Absolutely ******ed that the boys cant play state cricket imo...

What are they going to do? Play districts when 20/20 leagues are offering them millions?

Without SS, none of them will play a defensive stroke in 12 months

Just watched the Lehmann presser. He too showed genuine remorse that this happened on his watch. Mentioned he reconsidered his position after seeing Smith and Bancroft speak.

There's one odd man out in this whole situation.
While I agree with the sentiment, Warner has said he will be having a press conference but is just struggling to cope at the moment. Said his priority is to settle his family and clear his head before speaking.

As long as he's not hiding behind his family I think that's fair. We dog him all the time about not thinking before he speaks. At least in this instance he's not shooting his mouth off

The voice of ABC Grandstand claims Smith was simply “stupid enough” to give Warner the benefit of the doubt.

“He (Warner) was the instigator,” Maxwell told BC Radio.

“He was sitting in the dressing room with Bancroft and they came up with this ruse. As I understand it, Steve looked over to them and said, ‘What are you blokes up to? Oh, I don’t want to know’. He went out onto the field and he probably should have been more vigilant, as I said.”

I wish our politicians and those head of organisations that allowed abuse to occur under their watch were so remorseful, god sake it is only a sport. And that idiot from Jakie O was obviously born without a heart or brain so he must be a robot so can we please reprogram him.

Another disturbing trend is Karl Stevanovic"s opinions appearing on news.com.au every morning.

Since when did he become the moral authority for Australian cricket?

Is there an Agenda re Nine and Tv rights here?

Glass houses and atom t*ts Karl.

Just love these media types that have no grasp of the real world you would have thought that Karl would keep his mouth shut given his history

What a shithouse night tonight's been for anyone who loves cricket and Australian Cricket particularly.

Warner did front the cameras with his wife and daughters briefly upon arrival into Sydney where he was asked if he knew Lehmann had resigned. He said his priority was getting his two kids to bed and asked for a couple of days to clear his head before responding with his own presser.

This whole mess has highlighted how scott free the ball tamperers of other nations have got off.

Smith will be back.

Bancroft too if form permits in 18 months or so.

Not so sure about Warner.

Smith will be back as he’s a gun

Bancroft was really struggling in this form and might struggle as he’ll need to score nearly twice as much as any other contender to get a look in.

Warner will join the novelty act of gayle and co making millions around the world playing 20/20s

Bancroft was Australia's leading run scorer this series.

Only last week Sutherland told the networks to go back and adjust their bids for the cricket rights

In related news, ch9 takes over all tennis coverage from 2020 I think, which might spell the end of the 9 and cricket partnership.

From an article today:

"Even South African captain Faf du Plessis admitted he thought Smith’s 12-month ban was too harsh.

“I think, yes, I think so,” du Plessis said. “But I understand the context of it now. Perhaps I didn’t understand how important it is to them, but you can really see how much it means to the Australian public. You can understand why they think they need to be so harsh ...

“(But) from where I’m sitting, I think it (Smith’s sanction) is harsh if you go back into the history where certain players have been in similar situations.”

Funny that Faf refers to himself in the third person.

Supposedly all three players are speaking with legal counsel regarding appealing the severity of the punishment. But the feeling is Smith will accept the punishment.

I would think that this is the type of case that could go to the CAS and the players would win a reduced penalty. If all of the reports (from Jim Maxwell) are true, then the penalty to Smith especially would be considered extraordinary harsh.

Agree completely. Smith in particular seems to have been over punished.

Depends what he said to officials after the game that we aren't privy too though.

the penalties are harsh but send a clear and simple message, cheating wont be tolerated in our national team, IMO teams like pakastan, india, england and south africa who took soft approaches to players who got caught out cheating have been called out.

sure we go into the next 12 months missing some very talented players, but going forward i believe it strengthen our credibility.

lying in the initial press conference likely didnt do him any favours.

Good post - especially as to how the other teams have been called out by our hard line.

Lying? If he truly had as much idea of what was going on as is being reported all of his comments make sense with the information he had available.

There was zero time to be briefed on what had happened or investigate the exact details, so he bumbled through with what was at hand.

As I saw someone say, he's the Bancroft here. Not the best target.
He's a producer for the show, he's not some low tier scrub.

Also, some people think Bancroft is getting off pretty good compared to the others involved.
