I get it.

It's a kid's sport and is marketed as such.

Glitzy glamour and zero substance.

I've been to a few games and was bored shitless as I had zero emotional investment.

Hi 5 is great for the littlies, but something I'm not personally interested in either :D
Na, you don't get it. Its not a kids sport at all. The tactics and skill are fantastic to watch. Everyone thought it would be a batsman game but its is far from that. Teams and bowlers have had to come up with new tactics and its great to watch.

As far as no emotional investment goes, thats your own grumpy pants fault. I dare say BBL Merch way out sells Australian Team Merch. I know at Strikers games there is enourmous emotional investment from fans, and watching on TV, its the same all round Australia.

Good points all round.

It's still shit :thumbsu:

The emotional investment is growing as time goes on and people are seeing it's not just a gimmick comp.

It took me 3-4 years to buy in properly. Picked the Renegades from the start due to JB and the fact I couldn't support an Eddie Maguire corporation. My young daughter was almost as disappointed DJ Bravo wasn't playing for us this year as she was when Boomer retired.

The BBL has been amazing in attracting kids to cricket. We've got record numbers in our juniors, which is great for country cricket and 90% are either Stars or Gades fans.

I know I'm in the minority, but I totally agree. Call me a traditionalist but it does nothing for me at all when I watch it.
I want to see batsmen value their wicket above all else and get challenged by the best bowlers. Not flat decks, short boundaries and trundlers.
An old boss of mine used to say ODIs were the dumbing down of cricket, and T20 seems to be the next step in that for me!

I laughed when Punter mentioned a T10 tournament the other day.

What we really need to attract the numbers is a 5 over comp complete with fireworks, dancers, acrobats, cgi virtual gaming booths & robot waiters.

And a ferris wheel.

We just introduced T20s in our junior cricket this year. Be interesting to c if our numbers pick up over the next few years. Would love to know what your area has done to get record numbers??

It's not the actual introduction of T20 games to the juniors that has increased participation, it's more the hype created by the BBL that has got kids interested.

We're a town ofabout 35,000 but we don't do anything special. Letter drop the area every year and have a teacher one of the schools drumming up potential kids.

Numbers have been steadily increasing for about 5 years now. We used to have 4 teams, now we have 7 boys and 1 girls team and that's not including the 30 or so 5-8 year olds that do the Woolworths Blast on a Sunday.

None of this matters though if you don't have a good junior structure and good people to run it.

Ufortunately being subjected to some BBL tonight.

Dancers around the boundary.

Dancers.

What the actual ****?
Most players use it as a retirement fund top up their super. I am with you give me test cricket every day of the week. bbl is a poor mans chess game in my opinion. I have played a fair bit of first grade cricket in my time bbl is just a bit of hit and giggle.

No doubt it started as hit and giggle but it’s changing. Guys like Warne, Pederson and MJ certainly used it for a retirement plan, but they were also instrumental in the promotion of the game.

The players now want to win the title and as the teams get more history the emotional investment will increase. Theres a whole stack of players that are getting the thrill of playing cricket in front of 50000 people compared to the 500 they are used to. With fans support the players are driven to succeed. It’s not hit and giggle when you have a fan base wanting you to win. Shit footy started off as a bit of a kick and giggle but we’d hate our players to play like that now.

I love test cricket, more so than BBL but I also love the BBL. I don’t understand why cricket lovers can’t love both. They’re different games, just enjoy both for what they are.

Spot on mate. Real cricket lovers love all forms of the game. Cricket snobs who claim to only love test cricket but hate the short formats of the game don’t appreciate the great skills that they bring- running between wickets, athleticism in the field, being able to bowl different balls at different paces, power hitting etc. I think most of them secretly enjoy T20 but for some reason feel the need to tell everyone how much they dislike it!

Time to take The Boxing Day test off Melbourne. Shit pitch after shit pitch has ruined the spectacle. There is absolutely nothing in this for the bowlers and we need to move the test to the Gabba or Adelaide.

How many Melbourne tests are the curators going to destroy with shit pitches?

An absolute BOREfest. Shit dead pitches designed for grinding 5 day cricket to get gate takings out of crowds.

It's as if the IBCC have instructed the curator.

As a Victorian any other state wanting to take the Boxing Day Test from Victoria can get stuffed. As a cricket lover if we keep dishing up pitches like this we don't deserve to keep it.

Indians have plundered 80-something runs off ordinary bowling in half a day on a road. Shameful.
You have to be kidding. 1 for 100 on the first day of a test. You’d take that every time no matter the pitch or attack. It’s 5 days, they’re in no rush batting first and time to score will come. You’ve been influenced by T20 to much!
