Christ Hayden, Slats, Punter and co had Shoiab, Waqar, Donald and co and co at close to 160 and we still got 500.

This group are way off it technically or mentally.

We were blessed man. Real anomaly IMO.

Weirdly I think we've got close to two of the best I've ever seen in Smith and Marnus (the latter's longevity yet to be proved), but we just fall away so quickly after those two.

Yeah my upbringing sucks.

Just as a teenager North killing it in 90s, then mostly cricket too where success is just expected......

Now this shit? FMD

The 2006/07 Ashes 1st Test side had a Top 7 who would all finish their careers with a batting average over 45.

Langer 45.27
Hayden 50.74
Ponting 51.85
Clarke 49.10
Martyn 46.38
Hussey 51.53
Gilchrist 47.61

And Hodge 55.89, Jaques 47.47 and Katich 45.03 were all Test players before and after who couldn't get in the team that season. Adam Voges is the only payer to start and finish his Test career since 2006/07 and finish with an average of over 45 - 61.88.

The uncapped David Hussey would probably also walk in to this side tomorrow as well!

I always feel like Clarke's career average never did him justice. At the peak of his powers no one could get him out.

Jamie Cox a far better player than David Hussey imo

That's where Renshaw was a bit harshly dealt with. His average test innings lasted 75 balls.

Exactly. It's not runs always, time is underestimated.

Sets up the rest with a softer ball and tired bowlers

Christ no.

You serious?

Depends how desperate we get! Played well in Pakistan when the rest of the side faltered then got found out against an Indian attack which tbh has found out about 90 per cent of our batsmen over the last few series against them. Has opened up his stance to reduce the falling over to the off side, so shows an ability to learn even in his old age.

Can take a catch at least.

Jamie Cox - 0 tests - FC average 42.7
David Hussey - 0 tests - FC Avg 52.5
Stuart Law - 1 test - FC Avg 50.52
Martin Love - 5 tests - FC Avg 49.94
Brad Hodge - 6 tests - FC Avg 48.81
Jamie Siddons - 0 tests - FC Avg 44.91

Fair to say it was a very tough batting line-up to crack in to in the 90s and 00s. Even guys like Lehman and Bevan would have played a heap more test cricket in another era.

Was that all? Ok then on Cox my apologies.

Stuart Law and Brad Hodge wrong place wrong time.

I do know Brad Hodge was/is extremely unliked so that wouldn't have helped his chances.........

This sort of thinking is prevalent in park cricket, but should not be part of our planning at this level.

Our batting needs to be sorted. Simple as that.

Firstly on Paine:

Paine averages about the same as Haddin who was never questioned for his batting.
He is far an away the best keeper in the country and probably our best captaincy option. He won us the first test with his batting. Leave him alone. Yes you. All of you.
Green or a batting all rounder moving to 8:

This is significantly weakening our strong point that wins us most tests. As you named Cummins, I’m presuming you mean Hazlewood or Starc get replaced by Green?
Not only is Green not a frontline test bowler , it would ruin his development and burn Cummins into the ground carrying the load Green can’t.

We need 4 or 5 top line batsman to be the side we once were and what is expected.
Currently with have 2.5 (Marnus is still developing), one of which is injured at present , is heading into the twilight of his career and is a bit sus away from home.

Burns, Wade, Head will never be these players. I don’t reckon Harris is either.

Until we can find/develop them, we will be having conversations like this and even suggesting robbing Peter to pay Paul scenarios.

A lot is going to rest on Pucovski and Green.

Agreed! Paine is fine and that first test innings already forgotten it seems. I say this as a huge Alex Carey fan, while being a Paine one for many years. I still think Carey will be our man, just Paine isnt the issue and captaincy seems fine.

Bowlers have been great. Green looks a gun in the making with both bat and ball (10-15 overs a day is enough), play that Kallis type role with the ball. Lyon, well its India we're playing. Not sure any spinner would be doing much better. More than happy with our bowlers.

If we're looking for bats, which we are and have for some time then we must get Pucovski in there ASAP. He's a prodigious talent, we have nothing to lose getting him in there and learn to adjust to the highest level. Provided he's fit of course.

Not sold on Wade at all, at best he's a short term solution - despite loving his grit.

Its easy to have Head in our sites, im much the same after some of his dismissals and catching. But......

BATTING AVERAGE AFTER 19 TEST MATCHES

Travis Head
— 39.75

David Warner — 39.46

Matthew Hayden — 38.74

Michael Clarke — 38.10

Steve Smith — 37.60

Mark Waugh — 34.60

Justin Langer — 32.25

Steve Waugh — 27.56

2 Openers and hold catches (which was a flipping disgrace) we wouldve been competitive in this test.

Managed to combine not being particularly bright with very high levels of arrogance. I think there was also a perception that he was a bit of a flat track bully but had some technical issues that would be found out by good test bowlers.
