Colin "Funky" Miller likes thiscan you remember the very average spinners who played for Australia post Warne ? You don't throw away a top class offie with nearly 400 wickets for some young bloke who may become good.
Seems to me that Lyon is suffering a bit here in comparison to Ashwin who is undoubtedly a better bowler, but is also rare in that he's a generational spin talent (with a non suspect action).
If there was a young spinner knocking the door down in shield cricket, then there's a case for them to bowl in tandem with Lyon on the sub continent. But Im not aware of any.

On the scorchers list?
He’s what 25 or so? Mid order player? Think he was injured or wasn’t picked for the NSW side, not an opener
I hate the idea of Australia being NSW Team A but Sams maybe? If not Harris
So how can you even comment mate?
Swepson is knocking the door down.

Post Warne? ie: 13 years? Lyon has been a fixture for the last decade basically and throughout that period, we have 0 wins in India, 0 wins in England, 0 wins in South Africa & 0 wins away in Asia (Pak/Sri). I don't know how you rate your national side, but away wins is all that really counts when you are Australian.
Head and Burns out
Warner and Harris in.
Wade to bat at 5.
yep think you will be spot on, though I think they may give Head one more test
that's just 3 first class games though. impressive figures as they are. I've only seen him bowl in big bash games and he does look pretty good but needs a season or 2 of consistent form to displace a spinner with nearly 400 test wickets
anyway from my albeit poor memory your series away form has come about because you don't have a top 6 scoring consistently enough. They haven't played the ball that deviates through seam, swing or spin that well. Pretty tough to put your not great away form at the feet of Lyon.
yeah I think that's a fair criticism of Lyon. He hasn't run through sides on the last day. But he's the best you have and hes a high class operator so dont think he's in any danger of being dropped. My point is we supposedly have a world class spinner that hasn't bowled us to victory in conditions that are built for him. We don't need his SGW wickets Australia. We need his wickets on Day 5 spinning pitches overseas when sh*t is against us and IMO, he has for too long let us down given when you look at the OZ bowling set-up, he is the only one you are looking to get after (which obviously creates more chances for him and therefore by rights, more wickets).
I don't rate off spinners without a doosra.
he'd have him batting 8 and in for his leadership qualities.........Only if Scott's is coaching.
Id love that idea but no, needs to consolidate being an opener for WA first
Would be one of the first picked in the WA shield side.
Probably ahead of Bancroft who partners him.

If Moises Henriques-Iglesias plays in the next text I'm boycotting it.
Enough is enough.
Cant blame him really, a settled approach to selection works better than a scatter gun approach,Langer likes to back in his players.
Burns shouldn’t of played either tests on form.

But Burns and Head have had 2 tests and haven't performed, but I think only one will go and that would be Burns you'd think
29 and only just really establishing a new role for himself. I think injuries killed his keeping career and WA now has Josh Inglis who is a great gloveman. He has 3 fifties and 3 hundreds in his last six FC matches so is definitely finding his groove.Id love that idea but no, needs to consolidate being an opener for WA first
Its a tough one Choppy. I like that he backs in his players, but sometimes its better they go back a grade and work on their game. He made the call to back him in and it didn't work. His confidence is gone now, so no point selecting him again.I'll get to your prior post on pitches and Aust great a bit later.
But yes I can certainly blame Langer and co as picking Burns was mind boggling stupid and unfair on other well performed State players.
Not having a go at you but it pissed me off he was selected and even more so now!

who would you have picked in his place ? Didn't seem to be a lot of recent form for the other openers but i don't really follow the shield scores

At the moment due to Bancroft bog standard form, but no, only just putting a full shield season together
I get where you are coming from, had massive hopes for him for years but another failed WA player... hopefully Green bucks the recent trend
