Whiteman from WA is worth a serious look.

Technically (batting) the best of all opening options that are being put forward and has 4 hundreds in his last 10 digs I think.

Harris will likely get the nod, but I would be a bit more bold knowing Harris probably isn’t up to test cricket
We can only select players that are in the current bubble/travelling squad. Hence why Warner hasn't gone back to NSW while injured

I really don't rate Justin Langer. Plays favourites and backs in spuds like the Marsh brothers. Also, he can't speak without a steady stream of meaningless platitudes and cliches spilling out his mouth.
Just remember the basket case of a team he inherited after South Africa.

It's actually funny you write that as I've typed it many times but thought no save myself the grief.

I highly respected his tough batting but he actually speaks like he's had a few too many knocks to the head.

Makes little sense to me a lot of the time.

I've never thought he was bright at all but I didn't want to post it as maybe unfair after ball-gate etc etc

29 and only just really establishing a new role for himself. I think injuries killed his keeping career and WA now has Josh Inglis who is a great gloveman. He has 3 fifties and 3 hundreds in his last six FC matches so is definitely finding his groove.

Agree with most of this.
He is 28 though and had 2 hundreds and 17 fifties previous to this last block
mentioned basically playing as a keeper at 7.

We were always going to get better from there. I think Paine has been far more important.

Langer's coaching record in WA was very ordinary in the Shield. He got the job because he was one of the boys.

I might be biased but listening to Ponting speak compared to Langer is chalk and cheese.

I know who I'd rather be in charge of my team and observations on cricket.

If you are basing your thoughts on Langer from his interviews you probably need to have a bit more of a look into the bloke. He is a hell of a lot smarter than you think.

Was he that good with the gloves? Paine would have played 100 tests if not for Dirk Nannes destroying his finger.

He was the recognised second in line prior to the injury

Was picked for Aus the day after he was injured.

His keeping was good, but not at Paine’s level.

Better with the bat.

100%

I don't think Ponting wants the commitment the role demands.

I really rate guys like Andrew McDonald and Chris Rogers who are in the setup as well.

That and he was the best placed person for the job.....hard to name a better person for the role

Pissing off Smith and Warner from senior roles was the best thing to happen. Both aren't and weren't worthy despite their cricket ability.

Completely wrong skill sets imo.

Paine has done a fantastic job to make the transition far easier that it might have been (I really rate Party Cummins too as a leader)

I think Josh Inglis has now made it no certainty that Carey is next in line for the test team. Carey is not a great keeper and Inglis is good with both gloves and bat.

I know for a fact Ponting doesn't want the job as he was offered to go for it and declined (he won't say that though not to undermine his mate)

It would be very difficult for him having been on the road 200 plus days a year as a player to then say to his wife he was going to do it all again as a coach. A mix of well-paid commentary, IPL coaching, the odd short term assisting role with the national team, and running his new wine label probably gives him a much better work-life balance.

The Australian Coach is pretty irrelevant to team success.

The team is either good or it’s not.

We are all from an Australian Rules background where the coach is critical. It just isn’t so much in cricket.

Players at that level have a lot of specialised coaching both private abs in the system.

Gillespie or Langer would be getting same results roughly.

John Buchanan made himself aa handy living post cricket because he happened to be organising net sessions and fielding drills for the best team of all-time.

Spot on. I've never met Ponting but know dozens who do from cricket and being a Mowbray boy. (where my Grandparents lived)

He is very switched on despite his early career lad behaviour. Coaching Australia is not even on the radar and I agree it wouldn't be for me either if could do all the rest, travel less and earn way more...........

Warney continually bagging him has kept the Buchanan brand moving along.

I have and will travel quite a bit for work but the amount of time the national cricket team spends on the road in non-covid times is punishing. The national coach potentially spends more time on the road than most of the players as very few now play all three formats. If I was in charge of Cricket Australia I would split the role into two. One for real cricket and one for hit and giggle.
