It is due to the same injury that Pant didn’t take field in the second innings. Wriddhiman Saha, who had played the first Test in Adelaide, is currently keeping wickets for the visitors. While reserve wicket-keepers weren’t allowed to keep wickets in case of an injury to a wicket-keeper in the past, a modification to rule now allows someone like Saha to replace Pant behind the wickets.

“It was felt that, if the original wicketkeeper was genuinely injured, then a substitute should be allowed to take over, but that the umpires should control the situation to prevent abuse. A substitute still cannot bowl, bat or act as captain,” the MCC had explained in a summary of their amendments to Code in 2017.

Blame the umps and Indian Cricket Council on this one.

Only if you give a sh*t about that stuff. 😁
There is a (potentially) very sexist term that ends with the word "batter". But maybe we've matured beyond that cos I've never seen it used in conjunction with women's cricket.

Don't understand the appeal of Paine: old, average with the bat, below average with the gloves, poor field placements. He must be a heck of an off-field leader to not only keep being picked, but to be the captain.

I had to giggle at this comment on cricinfo:

Bobbe: "Can Saha come and keep for us too?"

Ever tried to get a comment through the India firewall on Cricinfo? Impossible. They just screen and refuse to publish anything that doesn't suit the narrative. I used to really enjoy the commentary 5+ years ago, great way of keeping up-to-date on the cricket through the day when you couldn't watch. Now, it's just so India- and England-centric that I barely ever read their commentary.

Run rate required coming down towards 3.00 now, so an Indian win is very much possible.

As per India's 1st innings, the 2nd new ball is going to have a large say in their final score.
