I've got no issue with Shaun playing, Mitch though, FMD.

Shaun did his usual thing, looks really good when he plays shots, but goes out softly and/or stupidly and usually for not many.

I'd like to be as certain of North winning the flag as I was in predicting the Marsh brothers would choke out there today. As soon as I heard about the pitch, it was clear that they weren't the ones to do the job.

At least Mitch is a good bowler, might go OK tomorrow.

Nuh. You've got it the wrong way round. Shaun goes ok in the sub continent. He was the only batsmen that could hold his head up high in Sri Lanka.

Mitch is not a bad bowler but let's be serious here, how many overs is a 3rd seamer going to bowl on a dustbowl in India. Their spinners are turning it a foot on day 1. I've been a big critic of Maxwell but I defy anyone to not see that his bowling will be more valuable than Marsh's on this pitch.

The hell is wrong with Indian cricket fans?

It's day 1 of a test series against the great enemy (Australia)

They are the favourites and have doctored the shit out of the pitch to improve the odds

They have the 2 best test batsmen in the world playing. And the best spinner (on their own team).

...and yet the ground is 70% empty. Empty. And there's over a billion indians.

Serious?

This country has become obssessed with 20-20, the form of cricket you can play with only one hand in plain sight. They need to get real, stop doctoring pitches to obscene levels (yes make the pitches spin friendly, no don't create pitches where you play a spinner as an opener, that's just ridiculous) and actually realise test cricket is the only form really worth a pinch of shit.

I agree about Maxwell over Mitch for this test, every day of the week. But now he's there, we should use him. I can't see Lyon or O'Keefe Looking as dangerous as Ashwin and Jadeja.

Shaun did OK in Sri Lanka, but he's been underwhelming in just about every other series he's played in. The odd big score, and strings of rubbish dismissals.

Still a better option than Khawaja who can't play spin to save himself.

Smith and Warners bowling isn't up to being the 5th bowler. After seeing the pitch, I can't believe they didn't play Maxwell.
I would agree with you if we were playing at home, but I think you can get away with Smith and Warner bowling something like 12-15 overs between the two of them in India. Smith with his leggies that might snag a pole or Warner with either his chinamen (edit: haha for some reason confused him with Katich. Warner bowls leggies too, right?) or his stump to stump mediums.

The benefit we would gain through playing a proper batsman at 6 should outweigh the negative of Warner and Smith having to bowl 5-7 overs each.

Was it free entry?

What is the demographic of that city?

Having seen the poverty in India first hand most of the population are worried about their next meal let alone cricket on a warm Thursday afternoon.

Smith and Warner would bowl too many loose balls and get smacked. When Australia bowl they need to apply pressure by keeping it tight. We can't be giving cheap runs away, especially when we are extremely unlikely to be posting the huge scores we do when we play here.

Fair Call. However I feel that Smith underbowls himself. I'd like to see him work a little more on his bowling. :stern look

I've got no problem with him bowling a few overs but you need 5 bowlers in India and he's not good enough to be the 5th bowler. As for Warner,;he has been bowling medium pacers in the nets over summer. I wouldn't bowl him at all.

A work day plus there were elections on.

But theoretically the benefit of having an actual batsman at 6 would outweigh whatever improvement M. Marsh, Agar or Maxwell bring with their 10 or so overs compared to Warner and Smith. Ideally the batsman would make more runs than the difference you would concede by bowling them, if that makes sense.

The benefit we get from having an all rounder in the side isn't worth the fragility of having the all rounder then Wade in the middle order. It's fragile and generally means that when we go 4 down we'll be 6 down within a few overs.

Some thoughts so far;
I have no issue with Renshaw going off - Border's comments were ridiculous.

Sounds like he stayed as long as he could before requiring relief, just brought Marsh out sooner than ideal and in any case came back and made more runs.

Picking Mitchell Marsh a disgrace. What is the obsession with this guy?

Excellent effort from Starc. Turned the game a little

Indians might smack us around I suspect, don't think the pitch is as bad as some are claiming. Hopefully we clean them up though.

one of the top 5 made over 50. I'm not sure adding another batsmen would have done as any good.

I didn't see any of the first session but it seems our batsmen went into their shells a bit too much. I understand its the first session of the series on a dust bowl but Stark has shown what can be done with a more aggressive mindset. Our Batsmen played into the bowlers hands and allowed The Flower to set the attacking fields he wanted to. There wasn't a single batsmen playing with a strike rate of more than 50%
