The bowling squad had so much momentum and confidence after skittling the Pakis for nothing in bugger all time that the follow on should have been a formality.

Instead the Pakis get some time in the field to regroup and the bowlers get more fatigued from running around in the out field.

Lyon is the most overrated "quality" bowler i can remember.

Would love to see how many wickets he's actually earned by fooling a batsman, rather than just shit kickers to finish an innings or purely on weight of so many deliveries.

He'll get smashed in India. Liability as he's always been.
I've always described Lyon as boring his opponent into a mistake.

They get absolutely frustrated with the shit he tosses up and try to go after it too aggressively which is why he gets them.

He's not a spinners arseh*le, may as well have a bowling machine set up next to the umpire, though that would probably get more turn to be fair.

Completely disagree. Not only did it nearly cost us the game, it has given serious confidence to the Pakistan squad for the upcoming Boxing Day test. They just completed the 4th largest 4th innings total in history when our bowlers could of had an extra days rest all going well. We will never know. Starc, H/Wood and Bird had only bowled 18, 14 and 12 overs respectively- hardly an amount where bowlers need 'recovery'

Great game of test cricket in the end though, as it was looking woeful after Paks first innings.

Nuh, Go through history, no team has ever chased down that many runs, while they got close they didn't win. Pakistan are renowned for batting long times and being patient, they follow on and they make us bowl for another 150 overs and our bowlers are cooked and done for the series. We are left chasing down 150 with a wobbly batting order.

His record suggests otherwise.

He's a quality, without being a great, spinner. He'll still end up with 300+ (and that's being conservative, it could end up closer to 400) wickets in his career.

Absolutely, being a spinner in Australia is extremely difficult. We were blessed to see Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill in action. What other great spinners have we ever had. Richie Benaud, O'Rielly and Grimmett?

At his current rate he'll be playing until he's 160 to get 400.
219 wickets and he's only just turned 29.

He'll go close to 400 if he plays another 4-5 years.

The problem unfortunately with Lyon is there is hardly any variation or what looks to be any plan to setup wickets.

He's basically got a routine stock ball, doesn't vary his flight enough and his average pace is dart like which is effective at slowing the run rate but doesn't do much to deceive or confuse the batsman.

The two styles of bowling he should be modelling himself on are that of vettori and Kumble, not huge turners ofthe ball but their ability to beat batsmen in flight, speed and length variation made them an absolute joy to watch and so unpredictable.

I don't have a problem with Aust going in for a quick 200 in the second innings, it gives more batting practice and runs for their batsmen.

Who wouda thought Pakistan would get that close, Smith made the decision and he is sticking by it. It's easy for Smith to say maybe i should have done this or that different after Pakistan got so close.

Some posters said that the Pakistanis are a good team before the test and i see what they mean now. Good on them for getting so close, beats watching a one sided contest any day.

Once again he is being judged against of the best spinners of all time in Kumble but I'd say Lyon is on par with Vettori. 360 wickets in 112 Tests @ 35, compared with Lyon's 220 in 60 Tests @ 29.

Lyon is a good consistent bowler who'll do a job for his captain. He'll never be a superstar but he is the best we've got by a mile.

I think some people on here don't realise that Pakistan were the no. 1 ranked Test team earlier in the year.

No team has chased that many runs and won but there will be a day it happens and Smith and co were almost on the end of it today. Perth 2008 V South Africa should still burn in the memories of Aussie cricket.

The aussie bowlers were in wicket taking mode, with adrenaline flowing and still fresh with the Pakistan team in survival mode. If they lost 2-3 quick wickets who knows what they make in their 2nd dig.

Good win in the end, but it bit close for comfort imo.

??

Is this a piss take?

Starc is one of the best strike bowlers in the world, his last 18 months has been nothing but sensational. Hazelwood is fast becoming one of the better bowlers in the world and Bird is a good change bowler. I reckon our attack is pretty good atm. Pattinson would be the icing though. Great bowler.
I think if the attack was as good as you say they are as a group they'd get better results. Maybe I expressed myself crudely because I think both Hazlewood and Starc are world class bowlers but the attack as a whole is less than the sum of its parts.

Shame Vetorri stuffed his back when he was mid 20's. Had to change his action & hardly turned a ball after that. Shows what a quality bowler he was that he still got wickets. Plus top quality tailend batsmen

Lyon is a good bowler. They'll keep picking him .

I loved Vettori as a player, one of my personal favorites. Unlike Lyon, he didn't have the quality bowling support around him for most of his career.

yep mine too. loved his batting ! he'd cut yorkers to the boundary

he definitely played through periods of time when NZ weren't the strongest. especially in 2nd half of his career.
So crying shame that Shane Bond got injured so often. Absolute world class quick and Vetorri, Cairns and Bond would have been a decent attack

Maybe, maybe not. If Pakistan could bat decently in the second innings, nothing to say they wouldn't have done the same following on - certainly no reason to assume our bowlers would have cleaned them up more easily after no break.

I thought Smith bowled Starc and Hazelwood for too long last night, and I didn't think the extra hour was a good idea when they were so knackered if Smith had any say in that.

Anyway, 490 was a massive ask and in the end it was enough. On to the MCG!

I'm sure you know this already, but **** Shane Bond was an absolute jet.

One of the great cricketing tragedies that he couldn't get his body right to fulfill his immense talent.

I have no idea who this is, but he seems to have a decent first class record.
