I'm just glad you used the term BATSMAN rather than the tripe commentators dish up today when they instead say BATTER.
Big story in Perth paper today. WACA CEO Christine Matthews calling for gender specific names in cricket to be scrapped. She wants batter, fielder, night watch person, etc.

I don't get the backlash to this. Firstly, it doesn't matter if you call it nightwatchman, nightwatchperson or chief unicorn wrangler, the job of the player is still the same.

Because its an over correction seen by many as part of a feminist (I'm not talking the equality feminists) agenda.

What's wrong with those names being used in the mens game? The names fit.

Sure if you want to use the new ones in the womens league, go for it (or even female specific names if thats preferrable), noones going to bat an eyelid. But theres absolutely no reason the men should use gender nonspecifics.

Pondering and shit, I think I agree and we could probably go further- I see no reason to individualise cricket, it is after all a 'team sport'. So for example team A makes 300, why bother saying someone may have made 0. And could have made say 0,3,0,0 in his or hers of course last four digs!

Just an idea- thoughts anyone?

What's an alternate PC name for the 3rd Man fielding position? Deep Fly Slip? 3rd Person?
Wonder if we are going to see this gender equality terminology pushed to extend into footy as well.

Terms such as:

Man on Man - to become 'One on one'

3rd Man up - 'Bont'

Ruckman - just plain 'Ruck'

Loose Man - well, you wouldn't want this changed to 'Loose woman' would you??!! Probably 'Extra' or 'Sweeper'.

19th man - the Crows will need to rename their so called advantageous crowd support member to '19th Tool' or '19th'.

Anyone brave enough to follow the tests in India? We won the toss (probably the only thing we'll win the whole tour) and are batting. Surface looks more like a day 8 track apparently. Sad that England and NZ had decent pitches, but when big bad Australia rocks up they resort to cheap pitch-doctoring. India comfortably beat England and NZ, and I can't imagine Australia being any kind of a threat on fair tracks, so it's sad that they've resorted to this, although not unexpected. As usual, we'll hear the 'Australia gives us bouncy pitches when we tour, how is that any different to give them dustbowls?' bleating from the India media and supporters. India is known for its spinning tracks, so the fact the track spins is not the issue. The issue is that there are 'day 8 tracks' prepared for the first ball of a test match. Not acceptable, and if the ICC wasn't bent over by the BCCI's money then they'd make a stand.

Rant over, India 4-0. I'll still follow ball by ball :$

Pipe down. Next you'll be claiming if an Indian player racially vilified an Australian player it would be swept under the carpet for the good of the revenue game.

I blame Steve Bucknor for missing a nick, who could expect players not to racially-vilify each other under such strenuous circumstances
