You have to be kidding. 1 for 100 on the first day of a test. You’d take that every time no matter the pitch or attack. It’s 5 days, they’re in no rush batting first and time to score will come. You’ve been influenced by T20 to much!

Considering their average opening partnerships over the last 8 years has been something like 28 balls long I reckon they’d be quietly chuffed that a bloke on debut has put in 70+

Their highest opening partership against England Aus and South Africa in the last 7 years has been 60 or something along those lines.

Kohli in now to make a few extra and they go to tomorrow 2 down for 200. That’s a plus for india

If that's the case then Australia won't finish batting until day 4 and the game will be over.

Mark it down as a draw now then, we can all just go to the beach.

They’ll make 500 in 2 and a bit days, put us in at lunch day 3, pitch will slowly start to show more variable bounce and deteriorate.

Their quicks and Jadeja will rattle through us and we will just make 250.

They’ll send pant up the order to open the batting with the debutant at tea on day four make a quick fire 150 and declare 400 up.

We will have to bat out day five to see a draw on a wicket that who knows how it will be playing by then. We scrape through and set up An ultimate decider in Sydney on a spinning wicket

That was such a boring day of cricket. Can someone explain to me why it’s so hard to produce a good pitch at the G?

How many people went? The numbers Melbourne get through the gates is the only reason it will never move.

I know I'm in the minority, but I totally agree. Call me a traditionalist but it does nothing for me at all when I watch it.
I want to see batsmen value their wicket above all else and get challenged by the best bowlers. Not flat decks, short boundaries and trundlers.
An old boss of mine used to say ODIs were the dumbing down of cricket, and T20 seems to be the next step in that for me!

It’s diluted the First eleven from wat it was 30 years ago as Players have needed to become more specialised

Imagine if McDonalds put out a Cricket Poster this summer as they did in the 70’s/80’s. Would it be 3 Australian Team posters or one of 40 players?

My point being is the First Eleven were once all recognisable to most of the sporting population

73000k a record

Why?

Drop in pitches and our love of AFL

Merri Creek mud pitches were diabolical messes but at least they made for interesting games

I’m a bit of a nuffy with thid stuff so you’ll have to help me out.

I thought they use drop in pitches everywhere? Like the other grounds we play footy at around the country.

The MCG drop in wickets have a different type of clay to the others and not the ideal amount for bounce and pace. Second, they have a concrete base meaning there's no moisture or air flow going beyond the drop in leaving the top lifeless but also too stable as it all compacts on top of the concrete.

Adelaide and Perth have different clay and also softer, porous bases allowing air and moisture to get through which allows for proper grass growth on top and allows the wicket to deteriorate.

You cannot polish a turd and that's what the MCG drop ins are. Why they haven't created new ones given all the money involved in the Boxing Day test and what yawn fests these tests have been for many years is beyond a lot of people.

Thank you :thumbsu:. First time someone has given me an answer. Been doing my head in.

If you keep getting the marquee match and there are 70k turning up on day one, and there is a decade- plus waiting list for membership, why would you bother spending the money?

Good question but the broadcasters and CA will surely put more pressure on.

The MCC might have a couple of barren years to navel gaze over the error of their ways as the Boxing Day Test migrates to another locale.

If this test produces no result as seems likely, the ICC will suspend the MCG from test cricket for a year or two.
The ICC changed the regulations at the start of the year so last year’s rating of poor doesn’t come into play. Now, if you get 5 demerit points you are banned from international cricket for a year. Another poor rating will see the MCC receive 3 demerit points. This will force the MCC to act, which they should have done after last year’s shitness.

In truth, the boxing day test should be taken off them as this is 3 years in a row. Simple fact is, they don’t deserve the test.
