Interesting discussion. I suspect sandpaper gate is feeding into these views of Smith imo. I reckon he's been devalued more than Warner because people naturally expect no more from a personality like Warner but hold the cleanerskins to a much higher standard. Smith deserved his whack but I have no doubt that if Warner wasn't in that changeroom, there would have been no ball tampering. Lucky boy our Davey - but I digress.......

Yea, there's a couple that seem less likeable to me before Smith, and Warner is easily one of them.

100% that the Cape Town incident would never have been dreamed up had it not been for David Warner. Smith may be misunderstood, but Warner is just an out and out boofhead. But it was a perfect storm of a weary team, a poor culture, hostile hosts and opponents (who contributed to the whole series becoming a race to the bottom as much as Australia did - Australia just reached the bottom first), sub-standard leadership from Smith and others, and some very stupid individuals.

I think Smith's biggest failing from it all was the ridiculous press conference that night where he lied about what happened, failed to grasp the gravity of the moment, and genuinely believed it would all blow over. Whilst someone in the squad and in CA should have prepped him to either do better or do nothing, his own limited ability to read the situation alienated almost everyone, including teammates, and cultivated an image, probably unfairly, of not being a decent bloke. Instead, he's just a guy who hasn't done anything in his life other than play cricket really really really well. His suspension was over the top given it came from the organisation who should have sheltered him from that situation in that moment, and in the years leading up to it.

I personally don't dislike him. He is incredible to watch when he is on song as he was yesterday. But like I said earlier, I find his mannerisms on the field very annoying - especially the overt chastising of himself whenever he doesn't do something perfectly.

No one disputes his ability. Absolute gun.

How he carries himself on and off field is like a spectrum 10yo in a man's body.

Should never have been made Captain and that's not his fault admittedly. Nothing about him suggests "leader" whatsoever.

If you knew anything about cricket you'd know Mitch Marsh is injured and this is probably the best balanced one day team we've had in years. Having him and Maxwell give us great flexibility.

I know Mitch Marsh is injured, it was a general comment about who I would prefer. Piss off with the snark mate.

Having a balanced team means nothing if the players that are providing balance are no good. I like having Maxwell and a seam bowling all rounder, but Stoinis is awful. MMarsh is also bog average, but having him would provide the same “balance” wouldn’t it? Again, a balanced team with bad players is worse than an unbalanced team with good players.

Ideally they’d play Green at 6, Not Abbott at 7 (shifting Maxwell up to 6), but I’m pretty certain they’ll play Abbott. It leaves our batting thin and I don’t think we can rely on a Smith century at almost 200 strike rate and a Maxwell special every game, so Green seems the better choice to me.

Smith looks more like an high functioning OCD candidate for me.
