Agreed! Paine is fine and that first test innings already forgotten it seems. I say this as a huge Alex Carey fan, while being a Paine one for many years. I still think Carey will be our man, just Paine isnt the issue and captaincy seems fine.

Bowlers have been great. Green looks a gun in the making with both bat and ball (10-15 overs a day is enough), play that Kallis type role with the ball. Lyon, well its India we're playing. Not sure any spinner would be doing much better. More than happy with our bowlers.

If we're looking for bats, which we are and have for some time then we must get Pucovski in there ASAP. He's a prodigious talent, we have nothing to lose getting him in there and learn to adjust to the highest level. Provided he's fit of course.

Not sold on Wade at all, at best he's a short term solution - despite loving his grit.

Its easy to have Head in our sites, im much the same after some of his dismissals and catching. But......

BATTING AVERAGE AFTER 19 TEST MATCHES

Travis Head
— 39.75

David Warner — 39.46

Matthew Hayden — 38.74

Michael Clarke — 38.10

Steve Smith — 37.60

Mark Waugh — 34.60

Justin Langer — 32.25

Steve Waugh — 27.56

It's the way he goes out which is just so demoralising as a middle order player. I remember he cashed in against Sri Lanka, too.

Has a real weakness outside off-stump. Just stands there and slashes without getting his feet in the right position. Will keep knicking them unless he fixes it.

A lot of his average is from one innings cashing in against a poor Sri Lankan attack on a very flat pitch.

Yeah i know what you mean, but the stats are there. Many of those listed do/ did bat higher but still he's far from failing.

Happy birthday Travis! He's 27 today and, only La Bus Change and Green are younger from this team. He's got a bit to work on with his batting at this level, he's young enough to improve and at the moment, he's not needing to break back into an especially strong side if he does get dropped. He's got time and has shown enough to suggest he isn't completely out of his depth at this level.

Whilst we a yearning fondly for the days of Hayden, Langer, Martyn, Waugh, Ponting it's easy to forget that they were all dropped after playing a good amount of Test cricket, and all came back better players for it.

Problem is, they all went back to a strong Shield competition, no Big Bash gobbling up the schedule, a probably a stronger coaching set up.

Managed to combine not being particularly bright with very high levels of arrogance. I think there was also a perception that he was a bit of a flat track bully but had some technical issues that would be found out by good test bowlers.

Hit the door person with his bat at Bellerive for not opening "quick enough".

Reminds me of Brad Scott kicking the security person that we settled.

Made 60 FC hundreds and averaged 46. Would be very handy at number 5 in the current line-up.

Yep he's in a front of a few in our line up.

Is he still coaching the Poms or back here? He's a fit unit btw

For me Warner and Harris open. Green stays at six. This leaves Head, Wade or Henriques at 5. Head is not batting well so he's out. Wade is probably not a no 5 so that Henriques as a wildcard.

Don't mind that. I'm not as anti-Moises as most people here. Would be a tough call on Wade, though.

Bumrah will absolutely destroy Harris with technique of snicking it.

Head can piss off to -does the hard work and then pretty much gives his wicket away.

Whiteman from WA is worth a serious look.

Technically (batting) the best of all opening options that are being put forward and has 4 hundreds in his last 10 digs I think.

Harris will likely get the nod, but I would be a bit more bold knowing Harris probably isn’t up to test cricket

Not from N.S W. Money on Khawaja coming in on an SCG pitch 😉

2 Openers and hold catches (which was a f*n disgrace) we wouldve been competitive in this test.

Excellent post.

Im not convinced Carey is our next man though.

His keeping is just ok and I don’t think he would be doing much if at all better than Paine with the bat in red ball.

We don’t realise how spoilt we are with Paine’s keeping. Only Healy may slightly shade him over the last 50 years.

Khawaja’s home record is outstanding. Could live with this direction if taken.

He clearly has been moved out the picture in recent times.

Not sure how much Langer would have liked his “elite honesty” , when it was backchatting against him by “Uzzy” in front of the group.

You either wait for the problems to fester and become cancerous or you grow some balls, make the changes now and prepare for the only series that really matters.
can you remember the very average spinners who played for Australia post Warne ? You don't throw away a top class offie with nearly 400 wickets for some young bloke who may become good.
Seems to me that Lyon is suffering a bit here in comparison to Ashwin who is undoubtedly a better bowler, but is also rare in that he's a generational spin talent (with a non suspect action).
If there was a young spinner knocking the door down in shield cricket, then there's a case for them to bowl in tandem with Lyon on the sub continent. But Im not aware of any.

Christ Hayden, Slats, Punter and co had Shoiab, Waqar, Donald and co and co at close to 160 and we still got 500.

This group are way off it technically or mentally.
the tracks are doing a bit more this series though Choppy which is great for cricket.
The tracks for Punter ,Hayden etc were roads during that era

i agree that they are miles off it technically.
Bit of a worry for Aussie is that Steve Smith hasn't got the runs since bowers have worked out his leg stump weakness

Id love that idea but no, needs to consolidate being an opener for WA first
