can you remember the very average spinners who played for Australia post Warne ? You don't throw away a top class offie with nearly 400 wickets for some young bloke who may become good.
Seems to me that Lyon is suffering a bit here in comparison to Ashwin who is undoubtedly a better bowler, but is also rare in that he's a generational spin talent (with a non suspect action).
If there was a young spinner knocking the door down in shield cricket, then there's a case for them to bowl in tandem with Lyon on the sub continent. But Im not aware of any.

So how can you even comment mate?

Swepson is knocking the door down.

Post Warne? ie: 13 years? Lyon has been a fixture for the last decade basically and throughout that period, we have 0 wins in India, 0 wins in England, 0 wins in South Africa & 0 wins away in Asia (Pak/Sri). I don't know how you rate your national side, but away wins is all that really counts when you are Australian.

On the scorchers list?
He’s what 25 or so? Mid order player? Think he was injured or wasn’t picked for the NSW side, not an opener :)
I hate the idea of Australia being NSW Team A but Sams maybe? If not Harris

Daniel Hughes, not Daniel Sams
Probably limited as a reasonable FC Cricketer but at least you get consistency

that's just 3 first class games though. impressive figures as they are. I've only seen him bowl in big bash games and he does look pretty good but needs a season or 2 of consistent form to displace a spinner with nearly 400 test wickets

anyway from my albeit poor memory your series away form has come about because you don't have a top 6 scoring consistently enough. They haven't played the ball that deviates through seam, swing or spin that well. Pretty tough to put your not great away form at the feet of Lyon.

as for my national side, well I rate them pretty highly. No doubt they had a very poor series in Aussie ( still highly annoyed that we sent a side there to play test cricket without any meaningful warm up games. Your bowlers were exceptional too.).
We've been pretty much unbeatable at home for the last nearly a decade. That includes recent series wins against the poms and India. We've also unearthed a very promising young quick in Jamieson to go with a decent attack of Boult, Southee and Wagner. We need a decent spinner but have a lot of other bases covered. Got some talent in the wings too with Conway and Will Young knocking the door down.
Probably 4-5 guys would make our all time side. Taylor, Williamson, Watling, Southee, Boult .

so not too bad considering we don't have your resources.

My point is we supposedly have a world class spinner that hasn't bowled us to victory in conditions that are built for him. We don't need his SGW wickets Australia. We need his wickets on Day 5 spinning pitches overseas when shit is against us and IMO, he has for too long let us down given when you look at the OZ bowling set-up, he is the only one you are looking to get after (which obviously creates more chances for him and therefore by rights, more wickets).

I don't rate off spinners without a doosra.

yeah I think that's a fair criticism of Lyon. He hasn't run through sides on the last day. But he's the best you have and hes a high class operator so dont think he's in any danger of being dropped.
I don't think Lyon has much of an arm ball let alone a doosra. But so many left hand batsmen around now that its not as big of an issue. I always get a bit suspicious of spinners with a doosra too.Their actions look dodgy. Apart from Ashwin who has a good one and his action is fine.

Would be one of the first picked in the WA shield side.
Probably ahead of Bancroft who partners him.

At the moment due to Bancroft bog standard form, but no, only just putting a full shield season together
I get where you are coming from, had massive hopes for him for years but another failed WA player... hopefully Green bucks the recent trend

Langer likes to back in his players.
Burns shouldn’t of played either tests on form.
Cant blame him really, a settled approach to selection works better than a scatter gun approach,
But Burns and Head have had 2 tests and haven't performed, but I think only one will go and that would be Burns you'd think

I'll get to your prior post on pitches and Aust great a bit later.

But yes I can certainly blame Langer and co as picking Burns was mind boggling stupid and unfair on other well performed State players.

Not having a go at you but it pissed me off he was selected and even more so now!

Id love that idea but no, needs to consolidate being an opener for WA first
29 and only just really establishing a new role for himself. I think injuries killed his keeping career and WA now has Josh Inglis who is a great gloveman. He has 3 fifties and 3 hundreds in his last six FC matches so is definitely finding his groove.

Its a tough one Choppy. I like that he backs in his players, but sometimes its better they go back a grade and work on their game. He made the call to back him in and it didn't work. His confidence is gone now, so no point selecting him again.

who would you have picked in his place ? Didn't seem to be a lot of recent form for the other openers but i don't really follow the shield scores

It might be tough but Burns had already been backed in off previous ordinary series......I agree you can't chop and change madly, but picking Burns was actually unfair on the bloke himself imo.

Horrible selection.

Anybody mate. Literally anybody who had shown State form as Burns isn't young so playing say, Khawaja or Marsh isn't any different as none are the future of Aust cricket.

You have to look at context. How often has Lyon had a decent score to bowl to in the sub-continent? Our batsmen let us down more than he does. He averages 30 and has a strike rate of 52 in India against the best players of spin.
It is great to see Swepson coming through so strongly. He had a good year last year and has really kicked on this year. He should really think about moving states as he is starved of opportunity on the GABBA green tops that Qld plays on. Get him down to Vic and he can take over from Holland who has been solid but not reached test quality.

In fairness to him, his role has changed due to a career ending (as far as keeping goes) finger injury.

Would be the test keeper now otherwise.

I really don't rate Justin Langer. Plays favourites and backs in spuds like the Marsh brothers. Also, he can't speak without a steady stream of meaningless platitudes and cliches spilling out his mouth.
