And has gotten himself out at least 4 times.

Simply not a test player.
They are career-killing stats.

I think we now have five genuine test quality batsmen in our line-up:
Pucovski
Warner
Labuschagne
Smith
Green

There is an opportunity for someone to put their hand up. Could be an opener and Will drops to 5, or a middle-order player comes in at 6 with Green moving up a slot. I don't rate any of Burns, Wade, or Head as tests quality.

Correct.

It’s only a matter of time for Wade, his record over 36 tests is not sustainable for a top six batsman and at 33 it’s hard to see it changing.

Only question is whether it’s Head or someone else jumps up.

Yep. But assume that these 5 are locks, what does the 2nd XI batting line up, and whoever is 6th, look like? Considering we're playing 'India-lite' in this match?

There is NO depth in Australia's batting and there hasn't been for some time.

Does Pant the keeper shut up ?
He just keeps talking and talking and laughing 😂.
He is trying to get us annoyed and play a crap shot

Well, going by today, it's well & truly worked. You could make a case that all 5 batsmen got themselves out.

Maxwell and Khawaja should both be in the squad, and probably playing ahead of Wade and Harris. Not yes-men though so it won’t happen.

Maxwell hasn't played a First Class game since 2019. He may be worthy of a spot, but either through accident or design, his career has become so IPL, BBL and ODI he's pretty much unselectable.

Khawaja has had many chances, highs and lows, but his non selection as an opener in a team with no opening batsmen, when he has the best record as an opener of all current players can only be put down to not being in the blokey clique.

Later on at first drop but for now, stick to the below and give it some time:

Warner
(Insert option)
Labuschagne
Smith
Pucovski
Green

Khawaja has had many chances

Pretty much sums it up

Averages over 40 in test cricket. He’s only had ‘many chances’ because he’s consistently been the scapegoat for poor team performances before forcing himself back into the side. Should never have been dropped before Head in England, and should have been opening the batting all summer imo

He's not the long term answer, but this summer he do more than Burns Wade, Harris and an unfit Warner.

Wade has been in and around the team for about as long. He's been a dodgy lippy keeper who can bat a bit, lippy middle order bat who doesn't make enough runs and throws away his wicket too easily, and an unsuitable lippy opener. Yet he's the penny who keeps showing up.

I get the appeal with Khawaja, always believe in playing openers to open unless really desperate but Harris deserved it more based on the pst few years

Harris averages higher with more balls faced per innings

Hopefully yer man Pucovski takes his spot permanently

So far, Tim Paine is giving a master class in bouncing back from a major “out of character” performance in the last test. Very impressive. Let’s hope he perseveres for the rest of the series and leads Australia to a crucial victory.

There is NO depth in Australia's batting and there hasn't been for some time.

The following players would be in the mix top 6 of the second 11:

Harris
Whiteman
Renshaw
Marsh
Khawaja
Maxwell
McDermott
Head

The worry I have is that most of the next in line are 27 or older and many of them have had plenty of chances at test cricket already. We aren't seeing a heap of young players getting consistent FC cricket.

We are at the end of our home season and the next tests will be played elsewhere. I question whether Warner is a genuine test quality batsman elsewhere.

What does our national 21 or under team look like?

I think the best of them would be Jake Fraser-McGirk from Victoria who made a fifty on Shield debut and Ollie Davies, who has been playing well in the BBL.
At the next age bracket up you have guys like Jason Sangha and Jack Edwards. Josh Phillipe has talent but has struggled for consistency in FC and Voges has butchered him by making him open.

If I was in charge of Cricket Australia I would be looking at bringing in another Shield team, based out of Canberra, and fill it with the best under 23s from around the country.

We are supposed to play our next series in South Africa if they can, given the current situation over there. Warner averages 63 across 12 innings in South Africa.
