Edit: Yes, that's Isa Guha.

She sounds like she has actually played the game , but i am an old fool that gets excited when women talk sport .

She has, if you count playing women's cricket at the international level as sport. She's a much better commentator than most of the blokes, regardless. Doesn't blather on speaking shite like most do.

just like in the AFL, umpiring has never been so bad

Putting forward a fantastic case to replace umpires with mobile hat and coat racks.

Steve Smith - wow.

Peter Siddle justified his selection without even bowling a ball?

You must be joking. He's left Lyon stranded on the cusp of his first test century. Smith is a campaigner.

Bit of a surprising scoreline given the score at tea when I went to bed. Got to be deflating for England.

122 runs for the first 8 wickets.

162 runs for the final 2 wickets.

What an indictment on the batting lineup.

Now the runs are on the board (and should be competitive) hopefully our bowlers and expose the equally brittle English batting.

Good from Pattinson - little bit of shape and kept testing Roy around his off stump. Roy isn't a test cricketer's arseh*le on that evidence. Cummins needs to lift a bit, but he seems to be getting his line right after coming back over the wicket.

So Burns thick edges his way to a ton and England all but have a 1-0 lead in the books. All my optimism has evaporated.

His wagon wheel was interesting. Hazarding a guess, he must have had at least 75% of his runs in an arc from cover point to third man. In any case, ton up, good on him, but I'd imagine that's the best we'll see of him all series.

Paine really missed a trick last night. He's a very defensive captain. When Stokes came in to bat with Burns in 90s, Paine's fielding positions were too weak. Point on the fence, square leg on the fence, fine leg, and a few catchers meant it was difficult to bowl on the spot and keep dotting up when there's an easy single prodded in to the off side. Making batsmen play good shots for their runs is just basic. Make them hit it through the ring field with a bit of power and placement instead of just giving them the easy out.

Poms could collapse just as quickly, and I'll wait to see how we bat in the second dig. Lyon is going to be a difficult proposition to handle on this wicket in the 4th innings. We need to skittle them out for less than a hundred ahead and put at least a couple of hundred lead on ourselves. Variable bounce is already cropping up on the second day, so it'll be interesting to see how each batting lineup handles it.

The biggest trick Paine missed was not reviewing Lyon's lbw shot against Burns. It was plumb and has now cost us over 100 runs.

I think we need to knock them over for less than a 50 run lead. It's possible but unlikely I think. I can't see any way that we make 300+ in the second dig if they get close to or over a 100 run lead.

We're very much on the back foot.

Johnny Bairstow a handy bloke to bring in at 7. No idea why Denly is at 4. He may as well bat at 7 or 8.

Burns out finally

Should be able to get Ali out cheaply. Dot him up, he'll have a crack at a few, will probably pick up a few boundaries before getting out hacking.

Saw that one. Good line from Siddle - just a touch too close to be playing that shot.

Should get a close in fielder on the off. And the commentators say exactly that. Stop Woakes lunging forward to cover the spin.
