Could we not send Shane Watson an SOS to see if he'd like to come out of retirement? Tell him his broad shoulders and even broader front pad is required to help win the Ashes back. Will do at worst as good a job as Marsh with LBW review gold thrown in to boot.

He'd be a good sounding board for Paine on reviewing.
"Would I review that if I was batting? Yes I would".
"It's plumb then".

I feel the same. I almost feel he is an honorary Australian what with the coward punching and everything. Only difference is that he can bat.

The most painful thing about his innings could be yet to come. “Stokes killed us in the last test. We need an all rounder who can bowl 130kph and hit a long ball. Let’s get Mitchell Marsh in the team!”
Mitch Marsh is apparently in the call-up frame. Huzzah!! We're saved!!
****ing called it...

Khawaja and Pattinson out for Smith and Starc. No Marsh is a bullet dodged but Starc in might be a hail of bullets instead - one way or the other...
We need a circuit breaker. Starc will be hungry and fired hopefully and although he's not as good as he's talked about he can bowl a match winning spell. Haze and Cummins will have to keep it tight though

As reported on the BBC cricket page ;
Australia XII for fourth Test:
David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Matt Wade, Tim Paine (c, wk), Pat Cummins, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

If this is accurate Khawaja has been dropped and Pattinson "Rested" . It also appears that Starc will compete with Siddle for the last bowling spot . I am glad they resisted bringing in Marsh

Good prediction

Just call me Nostradamus :thumbsu: who makes predictions after reading reports in the news...

Got to love Stuart Broad. Bowls a half volley on the pads that gets dispatched partway in the air and he acts like he's unlucky not to have picked up another pole there. Very disappointed Jos Buttler didn't pluck that one out of nowhere at short leg, obviously.

Chalk and cheese how Harris and Labuschagne are playing. Harris pushing hard at the ball and opening / closing the face a lot while Labuschagne is a lot more watchful and playing the ball under his eyes. Also weird effort from Archer... is bowling 15 kph slower than normal on the first day of a Test (as Warney is fond of repeating). Soft? Very likely.

Maybe Archer just doesn't like the cold weather .

Or apparently he's been waiting for Smith to come in. Weird attitude... will just roll the arm over at the first few blokes until someone I want to scalp comes to the crease.

Labuschagne has obviously been taking batting tips from Smith, too, judging by all these mighty flourishes.

And Mark Taylor saying he's unhappy Harris was given LBW because those sort of calls aren't normally give on the first morning of a Test match... deary me. The ball was crashing into the top of the pegs, its not like it just clipped the stumps. Harris is a midget.

7th at bat for us and we are still no closer to solving the opener situation . Smith might as well open , he gets to bat early anyway . Tubby is getting more unbearable every season .

I think Harris was lucky to hold his spot. I would have speared him and left Khawaja in. Harris doesn't look technically adept enough to handle conditions where its moving around. Don't like Khawaja much either but I think he's more of a chance to do a job than Harris is. We really do need some decent batsmen with good temperaments to emerge.

You're not wrong about Taylor. "Australia would be happy to get to lunch only two down." Yes, no shit, we'd be delighted not to lose any more wickets this session. Just talks for the sake of talking and rolls any number of meaningless platitudes.

I'd have barrelled Warner instead of Khawaja. If he fails again in the second dig then only a win and thus securing the Ashes could save him. His position is quickly becoming untenable.

I dunno. Warner spent plenty of time at the crease in the first dig of the last Test. Was a crap dismissal and he didn't need to dangle the bat out like he did, but we also can't keep rotating batsmen in and out like a revolving door. If we had the likes of Martin Love, Brad Hodge, Stuart Law, etc waiting in the wings then fair cop, but the other options we could bring in don't seem like they'd be any great chance to do better.

Alternatively, maybe there's a gentleman's agreement between the two sides that they're both happy to start each innings one down with Roy and Warner guaranteed a guernsey?

they should only play 1 of Warner or Harris in the team imo, not both of them. they're too similar. I was surprised they dumped Khawaja instead of bumping him to opener.
anyway its good to finally watch Smith and Labuschagne batting together. been easily our best this series.

I understand our lack of batting depth but outside of that innings (where I applaud him for battling hard but he still looked terrible), he's failed to even get beyond 5 runs in five or of his seven innings and faced a total of 54 balls across those innings. Broad absolutely owns him and it's close to blind faith to expect it will turn around. I'd also have dropped him before Bancroft. That's how dire Warner's form currently is.

Our openers bat #3 and #4, so we're actually doing pretty well.
Perhaps we negotiate some sort of amnesty where Warner and Harris don’t bat and England just give us 10 runs.

The interesting thing for me is that Warner didn't get a gig in that tour match before this game. All the hopefuls, the players whose spots were in jeopardy, Smith coming back in from injury and Labuschagne (presumably because he's not particularly experienced and to give him a bowl) were selected. Warner, Head, Paine, Cummins and Hazlewood were given time off because they're likely the guys whose spots are assured. Also assuming Pattinson was "too sore", or something along those lines, so was rested.

Sad state of affairs if Paine and Warner are not in danger of being dropped. Cummins shouldn't be, but I almost want him to get the sack for that shit bowling effort and then coming out afterwards saying they didn't do a lot wrong.

Yeah, Warner has zero credits in the bank after the South Africa debacle and should be having to justify his position, which he isn't in my book. Which, of course, counts for nothing...
