I think they would now pose a genuine list balance question.
I.e given the choice, I doubt we'd go Bont given we have Langford, laverde, Francis and begley as tall, utility mid/fwd players. They aren't as good as Bont (though we're hopeful with Francis) but they play that role. We also have Heppell who i rate alongside Bont as a similar player
Rubbish. We have Tom Campbell and Tim English so I doubt we'd get max Gawn if he was available.

Merrett's a good player but I would still take a player that came third in the best and fairest in a premiership team like Hunter.

Players that came third in the best and fairest in premiership teams, like Dale Thomas.

In Merrett, you get a consistently elite user of the ball who has a balanced inside/outside game.
In terms of list balance a player like Merrett is much easier to find than a player like Bont .... I don't think any of the 4 players you mentioned would diminish the value of Bontompelli to Essendon in the slightest. I see little similarities between how Bonti and a guy like Baguley play

lol that's horrendous.

Of course. We also have Fletcher Roberts, so wouldn't take Alex Rance.

lol. Why is Hunter even being mentioned in this thread? He is a poor mans Zach Merrett. Zerrett pretty much does everything better than him, even without the support of players in 2016.

Zerrett, Bont and Cripps are on a completely different level than Hunter. Just stop, you're making me cringe.

Seems like coming third in the B&F of a premiership winning team is quite the accolade.
Nah, doesn't mean anything. Bont actually won the B&F in a premiership team but the Bombers would take Merrett because they have Josh Begley and Jayden Laverde playing the Bont role.

Meanwhile, Hunter & Macrae shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Merrett... If only they were as accomplished as Begley & Laverde! Haha good lord those are some diabolical mental gymnastics.

Merrett is incredible. His touch by foot is close to unrivalled in the afl. He seems to be able to find teammates 40 metres away when he is still in congestion and it just breaks everything open. Definitely in the conversation with the other two

It's also delusional to take Hunter over Merrett

Not even our second best mid - our second best player!

Who else would he be the second best player for? GWS, Sydney, Geelong?.. WC?.. Freo?.. Adelaide?.. Richmond?.. Collingwood?.. Gold Coast?

I thought he had a great game tonight. As for his top 10 player in the league status and being our second best player... I'll have to take your word for it and try not to be too miserable about our unfortunate lot.
I don't see why you're being such a dick about this?

Most teams best players would be best or 2nd best at other clubs.

Sloane, Pendlebury, Fyfe, Dangerfield, Selwood, Gawn, Martin, Rance, Kennedy (Syd), Buddy, Kennedy (WC) would all be either best (mainly Dangerfield) or 2nd best at the Dogs. Just like Bont would be the best or 2nd best at most clubs, including Sydney, Geelong and GWS (the other 3 top 4 teams).

Merrett is just behind that bracket, but he's closing fast and while it is definitely arguable whether he would be 2nd, it's definitely not laughable. And it's even more ridiculous to pretend he simply couldn't be a top player at a top club just because his club sucked last year.
For what it's worth I'd have him 2nd best at WC (Kennedy), Freo (Fyfe), GC (Lynch - until Ablett proves he is back to his best), Collingwood (Pendlebury - his disposal puts him ahead of Treloar for me) and 3rd best at Adelaide (Sloane, Betts), Richmond (Martin, Rance), Geelong (Dangerfield, Selwood), and GWS. Not sure about Sydney.

So he wasn't getting lots of possessions in a crap side?

It's hardly a crime
No he wasn't just racking up meaningless stats, he was doing what he has always done, had a very meaningful impact.

That's what was so good about last nights game. It showed him just doing what he does, and it makes the people who say he has no hurt factor look like utter fools

hunter is the softest player ive ever seen. Merrett is twice the player Hunter will ever be. Your opinion is biased so dont even bother replying mate.

I don't mean to be rude here but if EFC had a choice, they would take Bony ahead of any of those listed. What you posted is ludicrous and just goes to show how blinded to clear thinking club supporters truly are.

I never said he racked up meaningless stats. Just seemed this weird perception from some that possessions don't count unless your side wins
