North Melbourne chairman Ben Buckley called an Easter Sunday meeting of the club’s on and off-field leaders to reverse the embarrassing 1-4 start to the season that has sent the Kangaroos to the bottom of the ladder.
Buckley met with coach Brad Scott, captain Jack Ziebell, chief executive Carl Dilena and head of football Cam Joyce as a response to Good Friday’s 58-point thrashing at the hands of Essendon.
The meeting — said to be a lengthy one — resolved to “leave no stone unturned” in delivering a swift turnaround, starting on Friday night against Port Adelaide.

“I've spoken to the leaders of the club … after the (Good Friday) game, as you would expect me to do,” Buckley told the Herald Sun.
“Our fans are frustrated, our members are frustrated, and we are frustrated.
“My message is … when we play a certain way, we are as capable and as competitive as most teams in the competition.
“We have to work tirelessly to find the reasons why that is not happening, and rectify that.”

— Backed under scrutiny coach Scott to find a solution to the current situation;
— Called on the players to rediscover that famous “Shinboner” spirit, while acknowledging they are “hurting”;
— Said he could understood the frustration of restless supporters;
— Insisted the club was almost in the best financial shape it has ever been off the field, but conceded that needed to translate into on-field success.
Buckley would not be drawn on Scott’s position — he is contracted until the end of 2020 — other than to say he has a history of getting the best out of his players.
“Brad has proven he is a very, very capable coach and can produce teams that can be as competitive as anyone in the competition,” he said.
“The coach is an integral part, but he is only one person. We have to be unified in our approach to turn things around.
“(As a club) we support our players, we support our coaches, we support our staff and we support everyone in the organisation.”

Scott, one of the AFL’s most influential coaches, has consistently said he would only stay at the Kangaroos for as long as he is the best fit as coach.
Before signing a contract in late 2017, Scott said: “I’m trying to set an example for our players that we really want to build a really solid foundation for our club and we’ve got to do what’s right for the football club — and that includes me.

“So if that means that I’m the best person to coach the club going forward then that’s what will happen. But if the club decides ‘hey look we think we can do better’ then that’s what should happen.”
Buckley said the players had to take their share of responsibility for the sub-par performances this year.
“There is a strong onus on the players to go out and execute to the standards and the game plan that has been agreed upon,” he said.
“I know they are hurting, and I know they will work tirelessly to respond.
“We have created a brand over the last multiple decades, and in recent years we have shown the values of the 'Shinboner spirit' can be displayed when we play with that competitiveness and intensity.
“We acknowledge we are not delivering on that consistently at the moment and we have to get our way back to that.”

Still not buying this bullshit. We got a similar brand of messaging after the 'forensic review' line got trotted out.

"Scott, one of the AFL’s most influential coaches, has consistently said he would only stay at the Kangaroos for as long as he is the best fit as coach.
Before signing a contract in late 2017, Scott said: “I’m trying to set an example for our players that we really want to build a really solid foundation for our club and we’ve got to do what’s right for the football club — and that includes me."

You're no longer the best fit as coach, you've had 10 years to do it and you're about to override Pagan as our longest serving and he had 2 premierships to his name, you have 2 prelims that were FIVE YEARS AGO that we only scraped into and got resoundingly bashed in, and you're about to go on until the END of 2020?

Give me a ******* break. Call on the 'shinboner spirit' all you like, its a marketing tag at this point and that's all it is. You don't have the balls to sack him, nor the money to pay him out, or the fortitude to shake things up from board level downward.

"Backed under scrutiny coach Scott to find a solution to the current situation;"
This is the key. While Carl has called on the players to rediscover that famous “Shinboner” spirit,
this will do sfa if the problem is the game plan. If the critical issue is the game plan, then the solution won't occur overnight.

Carl "Insisted the club was almost in the best financial shape it has ever been off the field. Agreed but this has FA to do with the on-field performance.

Well the chairman has acknowledged an issue and backed his lieutenants in to deliver.
I’ll give credit where it’s due as there’s no place to hide in the next fortnight.
I’ll reserve my reaction to this reaction until after Friday and against Carlton.
But I’ll admit I’ll be surprised if we can hoodwink the power in Adelaide.
It’ll take something special I’d like to believe this group has in them

This quote is telling to me.
Yeah if they don't then it's a pretty clear indication of where we're at.

This quote is telling to me.
Telling to me too!

The mysterious ducking game plan that the players have to learn to trust!

Good luck boys!!

I don't see any quick fix i.e. Brad developing a new game plan and instilling it into the players in a week or two.

The best approach for the next two weeks would be to;
i) relax the current plan,
ii) select players in their best-suited positions,
iii) give them license to back themselves,
iv) have another tall option up forward to lead away from Ben and for attacking players to pick the best option.

Edit
Missed this point "There is a strong onus on the players to go out and execute to the standards and the game plan that has been agreed upon,” he said. So they have ruled out the game plan being an issue FMD. Also did the players have any real input to the game plan.

“I've spoken to the leaders of the club … after the (Good Friday) game, as you would expect me to do,”
He spoke to 4 blokes. Only one of them actually plays on the field each week. "As you would expect me to" is him trying to salvage HIS reputation after people have questioned it. LOOK, I'M DOING WHAT I'M SUPPOSED TO DO.

Called on the players to rediscover that famous “Shinboner” spirit, while acknowledging they are “hurting”
Players are hurting but need to do better. We've ignored this branding for almost a decade, but we know fans react well to it so I'll mention it

Insisted the club was almost in the best financial shape it has ever been off the field, but conceded that needed to translate into on-field success.
We are a good business, I suppose we should also be a good football team.

“Brad has proven he is a very, very capable coach and can produce teams that can be as competitive as anyone in the competition, The coach is an integral part, but he is only one person. We have to be unified in our approach to turn things around. (As a club) we support our players, we support our coaches, we support our staff and we support everyone in the organisation.
Brad comes first. Everyone needs to follow The Plan and we will facilitate that as much as possible.

“There is a strong onus on the players to go out and execute to the standards and the game plan that has been agreed upon,” he said.
It's the player's fault. I won't talk to them though, just their captain.

Questioned the players and made requests of them, backed the coach in. It's all so tiring.

Essentially.....Buckley has asked for them to try harder.

What a waste of time that was to summons those guys on Easter Sunday.

I think for the most part the players are trying. The issues are more complex than effort.
And I'm pretty sure the meeting went a bit deeper than the few quotes provided.

So blame the players for not executing a shit uncontested handball game plan that was always going to fail especially with our slow and unskilled list.

Back the coach in after the mess he has made. Soft.

....Brad has shown he is a very capable coach....WTF - he coaches at a 50% win rate - he is not Clarkson, Longmire or Simpson - he is not even Buckley, Hardwick or Beveridge. Bard is an average coach who has had 10 years and the best resources the club has ever seen to get success and has failed. Time to move on as quickly as possible to turn this club around.
