Crisp our new tagger?

If we do play a tagger I prefer them not to start in the centre square. Unless you're playing against an Ablett you're just disadvantaging yourself way too much

So put a Tagger on a Forward?

Modern taggers have to be able to play both ways, otherwise they are a liability. Licuria was a bit of a pioneer on this front, in that he could go off the leash for 35 touches, or lock down. Ling, Cornes, etc all could actually outpoint their opponent offensively as well. That's where macaffer falls short in my opinion . Would be horrible to play on him, but doesn't really challenge his opponent in the other direction. That said, I haven't seen 1 Collingwood official attributed with saying Crisp will tag, just fluffy speculation by the journo. But if he could become a ling type big bodied stopper who could also push forward for a goal there could be a role for him.

Caff not best 22?

My point. My point is with those 3 playing in our midfeild we wouldn't be ranked in the best core midfeild groups.

But like you said in a thread before, there a heaps of guys rotating through the middle. These three will barely play in the midfield togaether if at all because Crisp is still yet to make the best 22. Your forgetting our other mids like, Swan, Pendlebury and Sidebottom.

Try and win 1v1 contests and you win enough you get the Upper Hand

Sewell and Mitchell are both ho-hum kicks. The Hawks get their skill on the link. Accountable winning of the footy on the ball is their primary role, as it will be for Adams (who's the Luke Ball kamikaze type) and Greenwood (the Paul Licuria-esque hard checking type).

Were Crisp to be groomed for a run with role, I'd be betting it's for a linker and potentially their 'quarterback' type HBFer. I doubt we'll ever see him starting 4 in the senna square.

Mitchells one of the most skillful dual sided players in the comp.

Yes but those 3 together is a terrible combo for class. They're talking about Crisp as a full time tagger. Adams who said he wants 100% midfeild time or he will be angry and Greenwood who is meant to be only a mid.

Greenwood kicked 16 goals last year. Adams wants more midfield time but not 100%, no one spends 100% of time in the midfield. Pendles isn't going to be pushed out of the midfield yet. Those three together won't be a good combination but don't worry, those three won't spend to much midfield time together.

I Guess your right with Crisp, with him as a full time tagger, and Greenwood and Adams being guys that need to spend a fair bit of time in the midfield we are going to have too many poor kicks running through the midfield.

Surely THATSGOLD and mike123 are multiple accounts of the same person? My god you (two?) are the most negative people.

I don't live in a land of rainbows and butterflies so I can see that our midfield is no longer in the top 3 or 4, maybe not even top 10 as a group at the moment. However we have two absolute stars in Pendlebury and Swan, two guys right on the edge of being elite in Sidebottom and Adams and Greenwood and Varcoe who would be in the run on 22 of just about every team in the AFL. Throw in our young blokes - Kennedy, Broomhead, De Goey, Freeman, Crisp, Thomas and the many others that WILL get midfield minutes and we have the beginnings of something to rival GWS and GCS from 2016 onwards.

I swear you guys forget or choose not to remember how an out of sorts injured Swan won the Anzac medal last year. You forget just how good Pendles is or how many times Sidebottom comes up with a game breaking play. Adams is a beast - he will be better than Luke Ball in my opinion.

Anyway, whatever they do with Crisp will be better than what the Lions did as they never gave the bloke fair crack it. As long as he has a chance in the seniors (if his form warrants) I'll be more than happy to call him a Pies player and support him and the team.

I think if everything goes right we'll finsish top 4. Last year we didn't even have our best 22 on paper once but we'll comfortably in the top 8 for the first half. With additions of key position players in Reid and Brown at both ends. Adams will be an upgrade on Ball at least on last output. With out a tagger more ball winngin midfielders will play which will fix our clearance problem. We may have lost Beams, but Swan is ready to get back into form without injury, Greenwood is a good addition, we'll see improvement in Broomhead and also we have to top 10 draft picks De Goey and Freeman coming through with bodies that are ready for senior footy.

I wouldn't consider that negative but this is off topic.

Maybe accepting Crisp was a mistake in the first place if he is going to keep a young player out of the senior side. Could've just used another draft pick..
He's 21... If that's not young I'll eat my hat.

Also, if he gets in to the 22 it will be on merit, and the same applies for any of our young players.

As a side note, the panic caused by a dumb Herald Sun journo labeling Crisp as a Caff replacement is ridiculous.

There's no evidence that Crisp is being trained as a tagger, no training reports and he wasn't used as a tagger at the intra club match.

But still, let's all PANIC PANIC PANIC!!!!

Adams on the edge of being elite? Umm what? He was getting dropped in 2014

At the beginning of the season he looked a little out of sorts and was dropped back to the VFL. He came back with a vengeance and up until he injured his finger was comfortably in our best by a country mile.

His numbers are on the rise and if he can sustain this growth and stay on the park he will be in the top 5 players at the club. He has things that need improvement and by all accounts has been working on them. If his DE% goes up (probably his major deficiency) he becomes a much better player and easily covers the void left by Luke Ball.

Marley Williams would be the guy I'd groom for the mid tagging role, decent pace, hard as nails, likes the crash and bash and doesn't mind taking on a man physically. He also knows how to read the play well in the midfield and could in my opinion be an attacking tagger that hurts both ways.

Agree, Williams just needs to build the tank.

I hadn't read the Herald article, but had been thinking that Crisp may well be played on Beams in round 1 with a simple mission. I would love it if it happened and he won on the day. As a full time position, it does not seem silly to me, even if it is only on the level of the old Paul Roos policy of sending young players to tag the best so that they learned what was necessary to be a top player.
I'm with those that think we will surprise this year. As I've said, a great deal depends on Witts and Grundy, but everyone seems to be under rating Reid, Swan, Cloke and Brown, 4 really top players who didn't do much last year. What a difference a good year from them would make. And I really think that Broomhead and Freeman will be top order players this year. If a few others come on unexpectedly, then the side starts to look scarily good.
