Injury setback for Croft

Experienced Bulldog Matthew Croft has struck an untimely off-season blow, after injuring an ankle at training.

Croft had just recovered from a calf injury that has hampered his preparation for the home-and-away series, but will now be forced to sit out what would have been his first match for the year - this Saturday’s practice match against Essendon in Bendigo.

“It’s disappointing because he’s missed probably the last three weeks with a calf injury and he was just ready to join in with training and play this week and he hurt his ankle,” Bulldogs coach Peter Rohde said on Wednesday.

“It’s only a minor ankle injury, but it’ll put him off for a week or so.” Croft injured his ankle on Tuesday.

Rohde said club champion Scott West would return after missing last weekend’s 35-point win over Port Adelaide. Senior Dogs Simon Garlick (ribs) and Steven Kretiuk should also be fit to play, but Jordan McMahon (groin) has already been ruled out.

“We’ll be putting out our best possible team,” Rohde said.

“I think at the end of the day if you win or lose is not that important. But the way you play is, and the style of play is pretty important, and the way you go about it is important. But if you win, it’s probably more likely that you’ve got those things right.”

“Scott West was a bit crook at the weekend because of his leg, but we’d envisage him coming back in the team.”

“Jordan McMahon is coming back from a bit of groin pain so he won’t play this week.”

Rohde said the side had recovered well from their trip to the South Australian regional centre of Nuriootpa, despite the fact that their flight from Melbourne was delayed by two hours.

“It was very good. We were lucky we got back Saturday, which is always a good thing when you’re interstate, if you get back Sunday night it tends to mean training for the week is usually a bit flat.”

“They had the day off Sunday, so by Monday they were right, and luckily it was quite cool in the game.”

Not a good sign this. I hope those young talls are chomping at the bit.

A shame for Crofty (my favourite player), was looking forward to seeing him up forward this year... hopefully it won't keep him out too long.
