Crowd behaviour at Essendon games

I never said they should be threatened, especially physically. However it is naive to expect it never to be mentioned. Carlton supporters still cop it for the salary cap stuff, West Coast supporters still cop the West Coke stuff, Collingwood cop the toothless feral stereotypes.

The level of cheating and lack of remorse shown by Essendon far exceeds that of any other club in the history of the game and will never be forgotten by me. Essendon supporters should expect and learn to deal with many verbal jibes in years to come.

Don't kid yourself, Carlton and West Coast fans don't cop it over either of those anymore. I never see it mentioned on here, social media or at the ground. You're clutching at straws for an excuse to vent your hatred.

Amen brother.

First and only time in the history of our beautiful sport a club has instigated a team wide doping program, and they're still trying to get off on a technicality.

What a disgusting club.

Rubbish, still see many West Coke jibes on here. As a Port supporter still often cop Tarp references. Supporters of opposition clubs will look for reasons to have a dig at the opposition, I can guarantee that it will happen this year and into the future. Stunts like the march to support drug cheats will help to perpetuate the stigma associated with Essendon.

The Tarp jokes were sparked by Port supporters themselves by not turning up to games. How is that a justifiable comparison?

"Stunts like the march to support drug cheats" - it's not to support drug cheats but be my guest and alter the situation to justify your rant.

It's fair game imo if you do these 3 things

1) Keep it relatively PG - just be aware of your surroundings. Don't go calling the Bombers drug cheating campaigners or ****wits or whatever. Like it's not hurting your day to not swear, have some respect for others (as MaddAdam said, "won't someone think of the children", but I'm sure most people can remember having a day at the footy ruined as kids because of drunk dickheads...don't be the arseh*le who does that)

2) You take it when your team loses/they give it back. If I'm at the ground calling Bombers druggies and they end up winning and tell me to get my brown paper bags ready etc, then I've got to have a smile on my face when I leave. The worse kinds of people at the footy are the ones who want to start fights or get upset when you give it back

3) You actually are amusing. "Go back to Windy Hill and take drugs you druggies hur dur" isn't funny, witty etc. It's just morons being morons. If you're actually putting in effort, you will get laughs from opposition fans more than likely. Essendon fans aren't some weird minority without a sense of humour, but it will get grating to hear the same shit jokes 1000 times this year.

Essendon Supporters were presented with an option to support the Hird drug regime and coverups, or elect new board members, who wanted to distance themselves from Hird, take responsibility and make amends. At every stage the club has chosen denial and obfuscation. If the members stood up and said "it's not good enough and I want change" then I would have more respect for the club.

Port supporters weren't happy with the way the club was being run and changes were made to go in a different direction at board level.

The current Essendon board shows very little difference to the last. It would not surprise me if they tried to implement a similar program in the future.

I would say that with the latest recreational drug stuff, this will make all club supporters a bit wary of giving Essendon a hard time.

Why? Every club has issues with recreational drug use. Only the Bombers ran a team wide doping program with the official imprimatur of coach and president.

Unfortunately the vocal minority get the greatest airtime and unfortunately this creates a perception that isn't shared by the majority of Essenfon supporters.

Yep. I was reading the thread on your board about the march, and one person posted a picture of a "not guilty" sign he was going to take. This person was criticised by some posters, others defended them.

Now, you just know that the snappers in attendance will take a photo of an Essendon supporter with a not guilty sign over three or four people walking together because they just want to show solidarity with the club.

This is the problem with the march. It may be well intended, but it provides a platform for the types who do want to shove it up the world.

And it must have been blatantly obvious when it was being planned that this would happen - it would be hijacked to a certain extent by that element.

As I said before, the behaviour of many Essendon types after the AFL verdict came in - "Hahaha, got away with it" etc - certainly left a very bad taste .

I think the march will come across and be portrayed as Essendon sticking its fingers up at the rest of the comp - rightly or wrongly.

So much passion for nothing. If only this passion was directed to more important matters. The club made a mistake it got punished and it's moving on. I'd suggest you lot do too. Reading about what Carlton fans copped, well I was overseas for 4 years during their salary cap dramas. I might've said a few jokes on here a few years ago about it but that's where it ended. Ppl who are making this their life need to wake up. Go to the footy, release some steam but don't cross the line. No supporter deserves it.

The issue is that if it only affected Essendon, fair enough. Take the North thing with Carey and Stevens. That didn't affect any club but us. Opposition fans took great pleasure in it and understandably so.

Essendon's cheating though has affected the whole comp in myriad ways. You can argue it has affected the integrity of the very game. If North and Richmond are seperated only by percentage for a top 4 spot, and they get in by a slim margin, and played Essendon twice and recorded big wins both times against the suspension depleted side then it has clearly affected the integrity of the game.

That's the difference.

At the end of the day it's just a game. As long as the banter isn't personal, it's all fair game. So how far you're willing to go is up to you.

So in the spirit of that, come at me bro.

Who the heck is Melbourne to speak? quit being irrelevant and win a few games (as apposed to tanking) and then we'll talk.

Absolute joke of a club.

campaigners.

Its interesting, the only real bite I've got off an Essendon supporter over this at the game was in 2013. We were beating them and I shouted out: "This is going to bankrupt you Bombers, the lawsuits, you're going to be poor like us!"

This bloke sitting in front of us, who had not said a thing despite the torrents coming from North supporters, turned around, and with a look of real venom spat words to the effect of: "We'll never be poor like you minnows! Never!"

He said it with such force that it really grabbed the attention of everyone around us, and of course led to more baiting along those lines by North supporters: "Bankrupt Bombers". He then stuck his middle finger up behind his head without turning around.

I found that interesting because it showed exactly where the Essendon identity lay - for this bloke anyway, but I doubt he was on his pat malone - in being rich and a big club that can lord it over "minnows" like North.

He didn't take any offence, or not enough to respond, to drug cheat calls - and this was well before they'd been charged let alone found guilty, and was the legendary sombrero game when they were fully up and about and taking people on - but the suggestion that they'd be made poor by it obviously touched a really raw nerve.

If I do yell anything out this year, it will certainly be along those lines.

Funny you bring up the Port fans. Essendon have over 50,000 members during the club's lowest ebb and there will be a big crowd at the home opener. Port fans ran from their club during their lowest point and nearly saw the club fold. That's not standing up to the board, that's fair weather support.

As so many posters have told you before this...you really need to find a life that will have you. With 20,000 vitriolic posts about other clubs, you are a laughing stock and you know it...you just can't stop the bigfooty bile addiction.

Absolute fabrication and mistruths to suit your own agenda of hate.

Woah. Agenda of hate? I've been completely even handed here.

Reality is that no club did what Essendon did - had a team wide formalised doping program.

That's not opinion, it's fact.

You and the 20 fans you have will certainly be vexing to deal with.

We're going to have to rattle up a few counter-insults.

Kind of proves my point this post. The "big rich club that can lord it over others" thing is clearly central to many Essendon fans identity in supporting the club.

And it is this being threatened that - as we see here - provokes the biggest reaction.

You're going to have to come up with new material though. We're not the cash strapped Kangas anymore.

In fact, these kind of responses show just how out of touch with footy reality so many Bomber fans are.

While I could probably hazard a guess as to why not, why not?

The club is using the march as a "Stand by the 12" shtick. **** that. Not all 12 will be coming back anyway. I also don't want to be grouped in with the NOT GUILTY nuffie types.

I'm paying to go the game, that's more than enough support.

Fair enough. It is interesting that even on this thread we can see the divide between fans like yourself and those who demand "people get over it" but then happily go back ten years to when North was struggling and throw that about.

(And can't even get their facts straight - North never rattled tins)

I remember the North Grog squad lining up next to the Bombers grog squad after the game right near the locker room and the police quickly intervened all while the North guys were chanting "we don't need no drugs, we don't need no drugs..." I reckon it was the whatver it tacos game because I was wearing a sombrero as were a few of my mates. That could have escalated pretty quickly. You live by the sword, you die by the sword and if you give it out, you need to be ready to get it back as many of us Essendon supporters are finding out. Me, I recognise the cyclical nature of football and keep my mouth shut.
I will never forget a Hawthorn game where Buddy wasn't playing about 4 or 5 years ago and we got an absolute hiding. I will never forget the arrogant Hawthorn supporters who started singing the song at quarter time. That and some of the comments actually got to me. I have actually never been angry at the footy before or since but that game has stuck with me and is probably another reason why I dislike Hawthorn the most out of the other clubs. That said, I know plenty of good people who support the hawks.

Yep. Agree with all that but am more hopeful about the 12. The Not guilty nuffies are the reason why we are a laughing stock. Heads up their derierres. I also honestly hope that no one is stupid enough to take a #standbyhird sign, I really do.
