Crowd Friday

If you were an MCC member, what else is there to do? Go to the footy Friday night, then drive up to the snow early Saturday morning. Perfect.

98,010. Might be more*

It's a shame the Melbourne supporters already left for the snow after the wce game...

Should have built Waverley to original plans. 155,000 stadium to fit all Tigers

I drove past Waverley the other day and saw the remanats of the stand still standing. It's the first time I've seen it since games were played there. Would have been a truly awesome experience with 155K in there. IIRC the seating was quite high on the boundary line and there was some distance between the boundary line and the fence. I could imagine that with some engineering and upgrades even more fans could've been accommodated. Just needed a train line there.

There was meant to be a monorail and/or train line that ended up at the ground. The finished product would have been the upper level of the Kenneth Luke stand continueing around the ground. But there was meant to be extra standing room at ground level also, which would have been directly behind the access way which split the upper and lower areas of the ground level. So the ground level would have went further back which would have pushed the upper level stand further away from the ground. With the wide boundaries and flat stands, the furthest seats would have been pretty far from the action. They would have been better off with smaller boundaries and the front rows closer to the ground as you said. Could have held 160k lol. With that said, the standing room could have been removed and the outer stands brought forward with a full seating capacity of about 140k.

AFL would still give 120k seats to the corporates.

first serious post from u

means we're going to win the flag

I thought the 100k capacity included the standing tickets which aren't being sold.

100K requires everything. Practically, capacity is under 100K, but they wanted the nominal headline figure, so to reach it means including 'standing room behind the support beams'....

It was a terrific ground to watch footy at.
Parking was a nightmare. Would take literally over an hour just to get out of the car park.
Built within a rain belt and there was a reason it was called Arctic Park.
I remember going there to a preseason cup final and it was still 38 degrees at first bounce and it was a night game.

The whole idea fell apart when the state government refused to build the rail line.

The certified capacity, including standing room, is 100,017.

Not only would there need to be standing room tickets sold, but it also includes standing in MCC areas such as the Long Room, Members Dining Bar, Percy Beames and Frank Callanin Bars. I don't that such areas will full.

I loved Waverley as a kid. Used to live a bmx bike ride away from the ground and saw a lot of games there. I think the first time was when my uncle took me to a Tigers v Pies game there in 1985.

Highlights for me
Pre game froffs at the Wheelers Hill hotel (too young then but that's what I would be doing now :D)
The Jells Rd pilgrimage (always better with a froff)
Awesome atmosphere when the crowd was over 30K
Sneaking into the members and exploring the corporate boxes, restaurants and tv commentary box. You could actually see and hear the commentators.

I always craved to see a big Tiger crowd there in the late 80s but we were putrid then. I had to wait until the 93 pre season GF against the druggos to see a monster crowd there.

Must have loved those hills on your BMX... (I'm similar vintage, and grew up in Mt Waverley)
