Is it just me or are the crowd effects microphones significantly reduced for coverage of AFL?

So many times I've gone to a game where the atmosphere is deafening only to get home, throw on the replay and have it sound like a library because the crowd effects have been turned down so much.

Watching the A-League now where there would be max 20,000 and it sounds like a full house. It sounds far louder than the Port vs Hawthorn game on Channel 7 last week which we know would not be the case.

Footy producers need to up the sound effects to give people at home a better viewing experience so that they can feel like they are a part of the action. Channel 10 used to be great at this and there used to be times the crowd was so loud you could hear crackling in the microphones. It simply doesn't happen anymore.

Thoughts?

We have to be able to listen to the insightful and thought provoking commentators, whose calling and analysis of the game is at such a high level that having crowd noise would interfere with their words of wisdom.

Commentators talk too much, make it more about themselves than the game and we are forced to listen to them. How I would love to watch the footy without commentary and only the sound of the crowd.

The days of Richie "only talk when you've got something to add to the pictures" Benaud are long gone.

Fox Footy used to have the red button option where you could turn off the commentary and have different camera angles. Would be great if they could bring that back. The wide angle with crowd noise turned right up would be the closest possible thing to being at the footy.

This has been a recurring issue with Channel 7.

They're killing the viewing experience by lowering the crowd volume, providing no sense of atmosphere, coupled with boring commentators.

I understand the AFL wants to make money, but it should also ensure TV networks actually make the effort to deliver the product as best as they can. C7 putting in a half-arsed job and killing a great product.

if you want lack of crowd noise, you can hear the Camera zooming in and out:confused::rolleyes:

Eurosport used to, probably still do, broadcast the tennis like that. Cameras on all (or most) courts and just the crowd feed from the umpires chair on the outside courts.

Cannot agree more with this.

What possible reason could they have for lowering the crowd volume? It makes for a much better spectacle.

Watch a game from the 90's or 00's and the crowd level on the TV broadcast is sensational. Makes you almost feel like you are there.

Makes me turn over to radio. You can hear the crowd in full voice.

if you go back and watch the 08 grand final, the crowd is so loud. I don't know if they turned it up, but that is an example of seven covering football well. But any other game the atmosphere feels dead.

Get a copy of the Sensational 70s DVD and you will hear the exact same crowd sounds for every game from 1970 through to 1979, whether there are 75,000 or 15,000 in the house. It sounds awful. Then again I have barely watched a 7 broadcast since around 1992 so I dunno if canned crowd noises have been their go since regaining the rights
