Speedy squad named for Ireland series
Scott Spits
October 10, 2006
Australian coach Kevin Sheedy is again banking on a speedy squad for the International Rules series against Ireland.
Sheedy, who took the reins of the national team for last year's hybrid rules series in Australia, has picked a slightly more experienced squad for the two-Test series in Ireland later this month.
Retiring Brisbane Lions skipper Michael Voss appears almost certain to be denied the chance of a "farewell tour" after being left out of the initial squad.
However, the three-time AFL premiership captain remains in contention for the final spot in the squad, with Kepler Bradley and Brendan Fevola also battling for the final position in the 25-man squad.
Sheedy said the final squad position will be named in the next 48 hours and any decision on Voss was a "very hard call".
Former Essendon skipper James Hird is in Europe with his family and was unable to commit to the series.
Australia will be defending the Cormac McAnallen Trophy, which it secured with an emphatic 2-0 series victory last year with with Test wins in Perth and Melbourne.
The first Test will be played in Galway on 28 October with the deciding Test to be held at Croke Park in Dublin on November 5.
The squad: Chance Bateman, Campbell Brown, Ryan Crowley, Aaron Davey, Nick Davis, Sam Fisher, Dustin Fletcher, Lindsay Gilbee, Brendon Goddard, Barry Hall, Graham Johncock, Matthew Lappin, James McDonald, David Mundy, Ryan O'Keefe, Brett Peake, Danyle Pearce, Andrew Raines, Nick Riewoldt, Adam Schneider, Adam Selwood, Justin Sherman, Kade Simpson, Brent Stanton.
