Sorry fellas, random question.

Looking to head to APL tonight in Riverton, anyone know if you can register there and how much it is for the free game?

New to this great game.

Cheers.

Yep you will be able to sign up to the APL there (free) and register for the freeroll (free). It will cost you nothing.

The people at these tournaments are really helpful and friendly to new players. Good luck!

Were you a TD for them Ash?

Yes, few moons ago now lol...

Was going to make a joke to Berba about telling the staff member on hand that Ashley sent you, but given that I havent worked for them in about 3 years its probably someone I have never met working the shift who has never heard of an Ashley.

I think before yesterday I had played about 10 "terminator" tournaments, and never knocked out more then one person for any individual tournament

Well yesterday I finally got to put that to rest, shipping the tournament and AFAIK breaking the Burswood record for number of terminator buttons acquired, with 18 including my own

Nice one.

Of the 18 how many were you (when the chips went in):
- ahead
- flipping
- behind

I ran up a huge stack early and was putting people all in pre often with lots of 40% hands for 6bb but if I had to guess

1 in post very bad (88 on T44dd vs donkbet shove with Tx)
3 where I got it on crushing post flop
4 very bad but for miniscule stacks
1 horrible (jammed 14bb eff playing 16bb with Ax in small bb has 99)
And the rest either flipping or a small favourite

Interesting High Roller spot today, probably worthy of some discussion

We are on the stone cold money bubble. The payouts are

$35k
$22k
$15k
$10k

Final five players are

Ash12: your hero for the hand
Iori: The ANZPT POY from this year, very good player
B: An excellent local player
H: Older guy, bit of a nit, has lots of weird bet sizing things going on preflop.
T: Bit on the nitty side, normally see him in some of the smaller tournaments

Stacks

Ash: 10bb
Iori: 50bb+
T: 7bb
H: 11bb
B: 50bb+
Context

There is a player of the series award. You get points for cashing, and where you cash. All places are created equal (You get 100 points for winning the tournament you played, on a sliding scale to 18th, on the proviso you make the money) You get 100 no matter which tournament you win.

I have already won a tournament, and getting a cash here would give me probably 90% equity of winning POS, which is worth about $5k in value. So its effectively a 15k bubble for me, 10k for everyone else.

I am in the BB, every else is listed in the order they acted on the hand.

PRE:

Iori reaches for 2.5bb, looks at my stack, and makes it 3.3bb, and verbals that he is commiting himself if I reshove on him.

T folds, H folds, B folds

Ash?

Range for shoving? Do we flat any hands?

Jees, it's a beautiful situation for Iori and B, because the rest of you are crushed by ICM.

I'm guessing Iori might have a straight equity 10bb shoving hand, which means, more or less 22+ A7s+ ATo+ K8s+ KJo+ Q8s+ QJo J8s+ T8s+ 98s although it will also depend on the table dynamics.

If you're playing cash, you can call profitably with a similar range to the shoving range.

The ICM situation is horrible however. I'm no ICM expert, but I believe your chips are worth more than twice Iori's even without counting the POY situation. That means you need to call as at least a 2-1 favourite, probably closer to 2.5-1 after considering POY. I'm thinking JJ+ here, shoving only.

Note that AK (suited or not) is a terrible hand in this sort of situation, as you only have 60% equity against his range unless he is strongly biased to weak aces and kings.

I really don't like flat calling, because it leaves you sacrificing 1/3 of your stack and still folding most flops. I guess you could make a case for flat calling with AK or AQ and playing on only when you pair, but given the relative sizes of the stacks, I don't like it much.

Interestingly, if Iori thinks you understands the ICM situation (and if he understands it himself), he can probably profitably raise/fold some hands because he will be confidently crushed if you shove correctly.

I dont want to spoil results yet, because I think some other people might have something to include, but I chatted to Iori today and we were discussing whether his actions would leave him to have a capped range preflop (he wouldnt give me the no FE spiel with AA etc...) and I think that is the key thing to this conversation.

I will say however, that i did not win the tournament, and Iori did, and I am now behind in POS standings to him :(

Didnt do anything today in the teams event, so its down to the Main Event and the PLO. Assuming Iori doesnt cash in those events (unlikely, he is a very good player) I think I need an 8th place finish to beat him.

Final results...

I jammed AQss, he sigh called me with JTdd and won by flopping a straight (if I stop and go'ed I would have lost to obviously, but it never seriously crossed my mind to do it)

I did the ICM maths behind it the other day, and IIRC my stack was originally worth $11xxx, and was worth $17500 with a double up. (excluding Player of Series Equity)

If I believed his range was slightly capped (because of the spiel with no fold equity) as well as being slightly weighted toward Ax hands it was a shove, but it was in all a small mistake to continue rather then fold.

My original hypothesis with the hand was that AK and AQs should be played the exact same way, since someone told me that when faced with that scenario he would jam a range of TT+ and AK, which I kind of disagreed with. Overall I think I was right, since if we cap his range slightly to eliminate monster hands (generally JJ+, AK) both those hands have quite similar equity.

However, while we should be playing the hands the same way, that should be to fold quietly (and not tell anyone obviously)

------------------------------

Played Main Event yesterday, come back tomorrow with less then the starting stack but still 23bb

Played atrociously the final two levels. Player on my direct left was quite active and I made way to much of a concerted effort to get involved in hands with him, leaving myself in s**t positions post flop. I then ran a *ed bluff on the last hand to incinerate another 15bb.

I played so bad that if I was coaching someone that played like I did, I would be sending them to do additional laps of the oval for sure.

I think I probably would have done the same thing in your shoes over the table, but if you know the ICM situation I think you have to fold quietly. I probably tend to disregard the speech as capping his hand, because a player as good as he is could easily be levelling.

Went alright last night. 29th/166 paying 14 though :(

Couldn't get much happening till just after the add on when my KK raise was called by the SB. We got all in on a 4 7 8 flop, and he had Q8. My KK held on to double to about 13K

scored a few pots with 2 squeezes where i had a decent holding. first one had a guy min raise, and another call and i wake up with JJ, shove and they both fold. a few hands later, the same 2 do the same thing, i have AK and shove and they both fold again

Pretty dead for a bit longer, until my 42 off suit in the BB hot a 9 4 2 flop and i scored another 6K in chips to get to 17ish and thats where i floated about for ages, getting down to about 8 BB's being card dead

Pushed with KQcc in mid position to be called by a guy called Jared (seemed to be quite good) with AQ :( But i rivered a K to be back in it :D

Then was about 6-7 blinds again with K8hh and pushed, got called by AQ again..... turn and river were both 8's after an empty flop :)

Blinds jump quickly and i had about 18K with 2/4K blinds, shove with A6 in late pos, called by Q9 in SB and he hits his Q. Needed an A or 10 on river, but couldn't get there

Down to 5K, so shove with J5cc, gets into a 5 way pot, so would've had soemthing to play with if i win.....

Flop 7c 6h 2d

Turn 4 c giving me an open ender and flush draw

SB bets everyone else out, so its me, another all in who had 3K and the SB. SB has 7c 9c for top pair, plus flush draw (which i have beat) smaller stack has A6 off, so i need a J, 3, 8 or club to quintruple up..... and its another 7 :(

Made some good reads, but made a couple of average plays, one against that Jared guy in particular, but overall happy
