Women's Footy Crows AFLW Season 2021 - “2nd comes right after 1st”

The issue is not many grounds are good for the crowds aflw would bring.

Woodville would probably be the best, but cricket.

I reckon all SANFL grounds may be an issue when it comes to capacity limits and the crowds we pull (I don’t think the admission fee will have that much of an adverse effect on crowds, especially our crowds)

Could we, perhaps, see matches at Adelaide Oval?

Only issue could be BBL Finals (if the Strikers make it, and if CA don’t just play the finals in a hub), but perhaps waiting until round 3 for the first home game could be a workaround.

The only Adelaide Oval Home and Away game is in future Women's Showdown and both clubs work together to maximise Bays of Red and Bays of Teal. Or is that Prison Bars. Don't make it a game, make it an event. Perfect chance to award the Phillips Medal.

Valentines Day Game

Club has to smash that in promotions

Round 8 is a worry. Richmond thought they had to many members for Punt Rd Oval. Like Collingwood at there training venue.

Shouldn't Round 6 be a feature Round for IWD2021. Some navelgazing how good we got. Plus 12 months on from Women's T20 World Cup and full MCG.

UN Women announces the theme for International Women's Day, 8 March 2021 (IWD 2021) as, “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.” The theme celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.Nov 10, 2020

It probably will be. They’ve always themed the round for the weekend around IWD in the past

This is the breakdown of the scheduled Adelaide opponents over the first 5 seasons, with last seasons GC & Richmond games not played.

Brisbane - 5 (’17x2, ‘18, ‘20, ‘21)
Carlton - 6 (‘17, ‘18, ‘19x2, ‘20, ‘21)
Collingwood - 3 (‘17, ‘18, ‘21)
Fremantle - 4 (‘17, ‘18, ‘19, ‘21)
Geelong - 2 (‘19, ‘20)
Gold Coast - 2 (‘20*, ‘21)
GWS - 5 (‘17, ‘18, ‘19, ‘20, ‘21)
Melbourne - 4 (‘17, ‘18, ‘19, ‘21)
NM - 2 (‘19, ‘20)
Richmond - 2 (‘20*, ‘21)
St Kilda - 1 (‘20)
WCE - 0
WB - 4 (‘17, ‘18, ‘19, ‘21)

Played Carlton and GWS every season -both only once away, will play Collingwood for the first time since 2018 (interesting to see what the biggest time between opponents in the whole AFLW is) + never played them at home and in all likelihood won’t play any AFLW game versus West Coast until at least 2022.

GWS v Fremantle and GWS v Bulldogs are the other foundation team matchups yet to occur for a third time. The latter was supposed to happen earlier this year, however, and both are fixtured for 2021.

Geelong v Melbourne and Brisbane v North will be the first matchups to go three seasons without occurring, if they don't meet in finals. Though, again, the latter was supposed to happen in 2020.

Have been given an interesting start to the season on paper, quick first 3 games early season opposition summary/preview;

Melbourne with all their departures over the past 2 seasons can be pretty vulnerable and have inexperienced players across all their lines now with only really Daisy Pearce & Paxman in the middle and Cunningham up forward to worry about. Crows should go in as favourites but how Mithen (Mid) & Lauren Pearce (Ruck) return for the Dees could make it hard for the Crows.

Gold Coast aren’t a bad side and can scrap but were still ridiculously lucky to make that induced ‘semi-final’ that was scheduled last season when Freo smashed them, some inexperienced showed especially with the travel. Tough to back up 2nd year too but I would have them favourites if it was played on the Gold Coast. Kalinda Howarth & Brit Perry are dangerous up forward while Lauren Bella’s a very good ruck & will give them an advantage there plus the experienced former Lions defenders Virgo and Kasler hold their defence together. Big danger game.

Collingwood are hard to read, played some very good footy last season and can be hard to stop when individuals like Lambert, Davey and Molloy play very good individual games. Sarah D’Arcy’s a big loss up forward but more speed added with Aliesha Newman will help their quick play on gameplan which is one the Crows of last season would’ve struggled immensely with. Whether Sharni Layton was just a flash in the pan last season or she’s a fully fledged complete AFLW ruck will play a role in whether the Crows can win enough ball to put Collingwood’s defence under pressure. Tough game to win away & will depend on the previous 2 weeks as I said the Crows of last year would struggle against the individual stars & speed of the Pies.

Looking at these matches as I’ve said previously Gould & McKinnon have such a huge responsibility this year to try to combat more experienced opposition rucks to make sure our midfield stars get some first looks at it and aren’t chasing the oppositions stars in the middle all game as it will go along way towards winning these early matches as Lauren Pearce, Lauren Bella & Sharni Layton in the first 3 games are 3 of the best rucks in the competition.

Geelong v Melbourne is the one I was thinking of, how you can be in the same league for 3 years not to mention the same state yet not play each other is a bit of an oversight

The new draftees have their numbers. In draft order:

#25 - Teah Charlton
#5 - Rachelle Martin
#24 - Ashley Woodland

Also, the players we traded in:

#19 - Jess Sedunary (her old #17 is currently taken by Madison Newman)
#20 - Hannah Munyard (same number she wore at the Bulldogs)
#22 - Lisa Whiteley

None of the players who were retained from 2020 have changed numbers.

Good to have those two very athletic tall prospects coming through, even more pressure will be on the rucks to perform this season given the supreme talent Prowse is - though Prowse could pretty much play any position on the ground. Promising West Adelaide Mid/Forward Zoe Venning probably the only other realistic candidate to miss out. Looking at next year’s SA draft class it’s probably a little short of the stand out talents of the past few years and their junior teams have been topped up with a fair bit of bottom-age talent while going through the age ranks including the likes of Keeley Kustermann and Hannah Ewing who will be in line for 2022.
