2022. Round 12. Crows Vs Bulldogs.
Injury report.

Round 12 Team Selection.
1628579371632.png

The Crows will have a second date with the Bulldogs in Round 12, a team that they lost to narrowly last time. The Bulldogs are without Bontempelli, but have significant depth in their midfield to cover his sizeable absence. Fogarty has yo-yo’ed back down into the reserves, and Bailey will join him as they make way for Nash and Warner.

The Crows won what was another genuine thriller for the second time this year against the Bulldogs, showing the AFL world that they are here to push for finals, and progress from being a consistently bottom eight team. The Crows were out of the blocks early in the first quarter, only to be reeled back in the second. From there the margin didn't go above one goal either side and the Crows came up trumps in a nail biter. Naughton and Lindsly kicked nine goals between them for the Bulldogs, while Gowers and Dunkley also played well. The Crows had performers all over the ground but were led by Warner who had 27 disposals, eight tackles and eight clearances. Himmelberg went down with a groin, while Atkins and Murphy were very quiet.

Round 13 Team Selection.

The Crows will be wondering who made the fixture and what they have against them as they take on the Tigers for the second time this season, just after facing the Bulldogs for the second time. The Crows are travelling nicely and are in the top-8 for the first time since the coach took over. They will be hoping to continue their winning ways against a strong Tigers team. Himmelberg is out (groin) and Jones, Christen have been omitted. In come big man Frampton, plus Lynch and small forward Pool who will make his debut (pick 19 2021 draft). Laird will play game number 200 in what has been a brilliant career thus far.
1628642915219.png

The Crows look like they have found a diamond in Bill Pool, who has kicked six goals on debut in a side that beat the Tigers for the second time this year. The Crows will be really turning heads this week, as these wins are becoming a lot more regular. A 12 goal second half broke apart a game that was dead even at half time. Rioli and Stack were brilliant for the Tigers, but the tandem of Obrien and Frampton shut down the usually dangerous Nankervis. Additionally, T Lynch for the Tigers was kept goalless by Doedee (prior to concussion) and R Grundy. B Crouch (47 disposals and a goal), Milera and Francis all had huge games while Johnson continues to pay the selectors back for their faith in his ability.

Team Selection round 14.
1628665508113.png

The Crows will face off against the Cats in arguably their most important game for the last three years. In an eight-point swing game, the Crows will be hoping to continue their winning streak and start building towards a finals berth. In their way will be Hawkins, Cockatoo, Duncan and Stewart (7.3 Rebounds per game). Himmelberg and Doedee both didn’t get fit in time despite the bye, so Fogarty will come in to play key forward or possibly back if required.

The Crows only have themselves to blame after conceding six goals to none in the final quarter to lose by 12 points. Things were looking good after second gamer Pool slotted his 5th, but they went south very quick as Narkle, Duncan and Z Guthrie took over. The Crows wayward kicking certainly didn't help as they missed key shots consistently through the match. Milera, M Crouch and R Grundy were all good for the Crows but the two ruckmen will have plenty to ponder after being smashed by up and coming Melrose. The Crows will need to reset if they are to maintain their positive 2022, and stay in finals contention. Pool was reported late in the game for striking J Clark.

2022. Round 15. Crows Vs Giants.
Injury report.
1628675543667.png

Round 15 Team selection.
1628675572891.png

The Crows face another huge challenge as they get set to take on the top-placed Giants in Round 15. They will still be disappointed with last week’s loss, and eager to get straight back onto the winners list against quality opposition. Doedee and Himmelberg come back from injury to boost key position stocks and join Mosquito and Hickey as the other inclusions. Nash, Lynch, Fogarty and Frampton all make way. Whitfield is a force to be reckoned with again this year, averaging 34 disposals and a goal. The Giants do not have a recognised ruckman in their 22, and not even their list. This does pose a significant advantage for the Crows, especially as the Giants midfield is so dominant. Keefe (key defender) is injured, next in line Idun (key defender) has gone down and now Stretch has stepped in as the named ruck (2nd year key defender). Taranto is also out with a long term injury.

No ruckman, no problem for the powerful Giants who beat the crows by 23 points. Every time the Crows challenged, the Giants seemed to have the answers as their goalkicking midfielders were just too strong. Keays had a huge game for the Crows with 32 touches and four goals but he was a lone standout. The rucks for the Crows were good and certainly had the better of things, but this did not convert to ultimate clearance dominance or scoreboard. Doedee was reported for striking T Greene and McAsey went down with a hamstring injury.

Round 16 Team Selection.
1628731159405.png

The Crows are now faced with a must-win clash against the Suns after losing their last two games on the trot. The Suns are sitting 9th and are in good form, so this looms as another 8 point game for these two sides. The Crows have two forced changes this week in Doedee (striking Greene) and McAsey (hamstring). Mosquito, Murphy and Kelly have all been omitted. The five inclusions are McGuirk on debut (Pick 37 2021 National Draft), Jc Dawson (promoted rookie – Ex Suns), Knight, Nash and Seedsman. Weller, Bowes and Barefield look like the Suns players that the Crows will need to stop, while Rankine and Wright are in good goalkicking touch.

The only thing that the Crows would be annoyed about is that they should have won by more against the Suns. A 35 point victory could have been much more had the Crows been more accurate in front of goal. A six goal performance from Nash, and five from Grundy has blown away the Suns who looked short on key position stocks all day. Despite Gawn dominance, the Suns were beaten soundly by the hungry Crows. Jc Dawson impressed in his first outing for the Crows with 26 disposals and seven tackles and Mcguirk played like an experienced defender in his first game of AFL. Johnson and hickey were very quiet, and will be nervous this week with lots of players performing consistently in the reserves in recent weeks.

Round 17 Team Selection
1628752097327.png

The Crows have a golden opportunity to consolidate their place in the top eight as they face the 15th placed Dockers in Round 17. They will still have to be at their best as the Dockers have regained Fyfe into their 22 for the clash. Walters looks like the man to stop as he is averaging 27 disposals, almost six tackles, four clearances and four inside 50s per game. Stengle and Smith have been recalled at the expense of Johnson and Knight.

The Crows have been absolutely demolished at the hands of a Dockers team that looked much better than their ladder position suggests. They controlled the game from start to finish and did not give the Crows a sniff, led in the ruck by Allen and at ground level by Giro and Walters. Highlights for the Crows were few and far between aside from Nash's four goals and Warner's 30 disposal, two goal game. The selection team will be left to ponder what went wrong, and may opt to play Himmelberg as a lone ruckman.

Round 18 Team Selection.
1628755374613.png

The Crows will now have to defeat the third placed Magpies to have any chance of playing finals in 2022. Despite the fact that they are a much-improved team, they will not be satisfied with a lack of September action, and nor will their fans. The coach has once again wielded the axe, as he struggles to find any sort of continuity in the line-up. Fogarty, Urbanih, Doedee, Sholl and Wild all come into a side which had a very disappointing loss to the Dockers. Out go Jc Dawson, McGuirk, Smith, Seedsman and Hickey. DeGoey is having an extraordinary season, and already has 87 goals to his name at 5.1 a game! Doedee will have his hands full as he returns from suspension.

The Crows have responded to last week's loss in perfect fashion, beating the Magpies by 39 points. They won every quarter and dominated large patches of the game, even when DeGoey and B Grundy threatened to take over. The midfield led by Keays, M Crouch and Warner were outstanding and drove their team towards victory. Stearns had one of his better games for the season kicking three very important goals while Urbanih did some wonderful things in defence (despite getting reported). The Crows will have renewed belief about playing finals football, as long as they can maintain this standard against teams placed below or near them on the ladder.

The Crows will need to beat a lowly Demons side in order to push for a long awaited finals berth. They are flying high after a convincing win over the Magpies, and will be keen to keep their momentum going. Urbanih (charging T Phillips), Fogarty, Wild and Stengle all go out of the side – Mosquito, McAsey, Smith and Murphy all come in to replace them.

The Crows ran out 57 point winners to get the crucial four points as well as an important percentage boost. In a wet game, Oliver and Langdon had huge games statistically, but didn’t have their normal impact on the game. Milera (35 disposals, 10 tackles, 5 clearances), Warner (32 disposals, 13 tackles) and Stearns (33 disposals, 3 goals) were all top performers for the Crows, who lost Sloane to a hamstring early in the match. McAsey had a good return, and his key defensive partner Doedee was terrific.

Round 20 Team Selection.
1628813621610.png

The Crows face the Saints this week and results early in the round have given them the opportunity to move up to 6th on the AFL ladder if they are to win. Standing in their way though is the streaky Saints, Led by M King (avg 1.7 goals) and Ross (avg 25 disposals and a goal). Despite sitting in 13th, the Saints have a percentage of 114%, suggesting that when they win, they win big. The loss of Sloane will hurt the Crows, but Schoenberg has been pushing hard for an opportunity that he now gets. Lynch and Fogarty also return as Murphy (striking Harmes) and Mosquito (omitted) are out this week.

The Crows have been outplayed in all aspects of the game in a disappointing display against the Saints. This is not the first time for the season that the Crows have been demolished by a team below them, which does indicate the evenness of competition this year but also an inability to win in games they are expected to. It was the midfield of the Saints that took the Crows apart, led by Buster, Gresham, Billings and Ross. Obrien was no match for Marshall, not for the first time. M Crouch and Milera both shone for the Crows and Warner was once again strong but the Crows just didn't have enough contribution from the rest of their 22. They will have to bounce back quickly in order to be there in September.

Round 21 Team Selection.
1628828240183.png

Round 21 looms as D-day for the Crows, as they face a Swans team that has had a big second half to the year. Both teams are separated by just 4 points, and this looms as a classic swing game. The Crows have made four changes for the match as Sholl, Smith, Lynch and Fogarty have all been omitted. In comes Kelly, Urbanih, Dawson and Walker for his first game of 2022. Papley has kicked 56 games for the Swans this season so far and is the danger man that the Crows will need to shut down. Atkins who is having one of his best seasons will play game number 150 and Nash plays his 50th.

1628838430550.png

1628838579997.png

The Crows were made to work for it, but they got the crucial win in a high scoring affair. Papley scored five and Jo Dawson had a day out for the Swans but it wasn't enough. Walker was instrumental at times in his long awaited return to the side, while the swing of R Grundy proved decisive. Keays and Obrien had good showings while Milera did a good job playing Sloane's defensive midfielder role. The Crows are now one step away from a return to finals football after years in the wilderness of the bottom eight. McAsey might have a case to answer for at the tribunal after his report for striking K Dunkley.

Round 22 Team Selection.

Who else would the Crows get in their most important match for three years other than the Kangaroos? The equation is simple – Crows win, and they are in the finals. If they lose, they are at the mercy of other results during round 22. Despite the Kangaroos sitting last, these two teams have had some fantastic tussles over the last three seasons, irrespective of ladder position. Murphy and Johnson have been recalled, while McAsey (reported) and Schoenberg are out. Polec looks like the man to shut down for the Crows, who will have to go out and play their natural game rather than get too ‘results focussed.’

The Crows will play finals football after beating the Kangaroos by a single point. The Kangaroos were desperate all day to ruin the finals hopes of the Crows, and played like a team possessed. At quarter time and early in the second it looked as though this was going to happen but a strong third drew the scores to level at the final change. Painful, inaccurate kicking from both sides meant that no-one in the stadium knew what was going to happen, and the Kangaroos missed a shot with 42 seconds left which would have put them ahead. The coach of the Crows said that this game 'put a few grey hairs on my head,' but he was also thrilled to get the much needed four points. Comben was a monster in the ruck all day for the Kangaroos, while Francis (31 disposals, 13 marks) and Warner (23 disposals, three goals) were the match-winners for the Crows.

2022. Finals. Week 1. Crows Vs Cats. Elimination.
Finals week 1 Team selection.
1628843887555.png

The Crows are set to play in their first finals since they lost the 2017 Grand Final to the Tigers. They will play a Cats team that they have not beaten in three attempts during the current coach’s tenure. They welcome back Sloane from a hamstring injury, and first year defender McGuirk comes in. The unlucky players to make way are Jc Dawson and Urbanih. The Crows will be hoping to gain an advantage in the ruck and prevent the small forwards of the Cats from taking control of the game.

The Crows have prevailed over the Cats and will progress to a semi-final in the 2022 finals series. They certainly would have been kicking themselves if they lost this one. 9.24.78 is not a winning score that they would be happy with, but in a finals game a win is a win. Sloane was simply electric in his return from injury (48 disposals, 6 tackles, 8 clearances) and had great help from All-Australian R Grundy (31 disposals, 11 marks, 4 goals). The Crows will be confident that they can take things further in the finals after having good success against contenders all season. Stearns suffered a groin injury and will be in doubt for the Semi-Final.

2022. Finals. Week 2. Crows Vs Giants. Semi-Final.
Semi Final Team Selection.
1628899618292.png

The Crows will take on the Giants in a do or die Semi-final and will give themselves an outside chance to win and progress to the last four teams. The team standing in their way is a powerful outfit, despite not having a recognised ruckman on their list. Cameron and Coniglio are more than handy ins for the Giants who lost to the Tigers in their Qualifier. The Crows have made just one change as McAsey returns from suspension and Stearns goes out due to a groin injury. Walker keeps his place and will be there for experience and leadership. All Australian CHB R Grundy starts forward and could be the difference. If the Crows can limit the Giants midfield, or if Obrien can have a field day – they are a chance.

The Giants were just too good and too strong for the Crows, who fought gallantly until the end. Despite ruck dominance once again, the Crows were not able to win enough clearances or enter their forward 50 cleanly. Coniglio and Cameron's inclusions proved decisive as they were the best players on the ground for the Giants. The Crows were well served by Obrien and Milera but the Walker experiment did not end well as he went goalless and only touched the ball four times. The Crows will take plenty of confidence from their season but the loss will be raw and provide plenty of motivation for next year.

The Crows have completed a stressful pre-season, which may have long reaching consequences for their future.

Francis, Warner, Knight, R Grundy and Nash all elected to exercise their rights to Free Agency - 4 of them found a new home. The Crows were bitterly disappointed with the decisions, particularly Warner who they drafted as a local, and gave him full support during his ACL recovery.

Lynch, Smith, Hickey and Kileen were all let go.

During the National Draft the Crows had a renewed focus on Midfielders.

Curt Irish is a mid-forward with fantastic goal accuracy and should provide good support for Pool.
Callaghan, Tremlow and Sarrazin are all midfielders and will most likely get some action next season.
Ulmer is a key forward, South Australian boy.

In the Pre-Season draft the Crows were looking for impact and may have got a steal with Rudi Kingdom who was on the Suns list. Key forward.

In the Rookie draft the Crows were looking for players ready for AFL action and picked up O Brownless (Ex Tigers Midfielder) and Crabtree (Ex Tigers defender), Pawlin (Ex Blues key defender) and retained Hanrahan on their rookie list.

Captain - Rory Sloane.

2023. Pre Season.
Week 1 Team Selection.

The Crows will open their 2023 campaign with a pre-season game against the Hawks. After a big off-season filled with surprises, the Crows will be very eager to continue building on what they achieved last season. There are two new faces in the team sheet for the Crows in Irish (2022 National Draft pick 13) and Kingdom (PS draft – Ex Suns). The Hawks have been a powerful side in recent years, and have added Darcy as their number 1 ruckman for this season.

The Crows have not started their season how they would have liked, with a 37 point loss to the Hawks. The Crows conceded 13 goals to 4 in the second half after taking in a small lead to half time. Omeara, Daroche, Worpel and Morrison were all brilliant for the Hawks. Sloane played very well in defence for the Crows, while the uncapped Irish had a fantastic game finishing with four goals. Kingdom did not get near it and looked lost at the level.

2023. Round 1. Crows Vs Tigers.

Round 1 Team Selection.

The Crows will face the Tigers in their first official match for 2023, with hopes of a positive year despite a turbulent off-season. Irish will make his debut, while Fogarty comes in for Kingdom. The Crows will need to be at their best to beat a seemingly perennial competitor in the Tigers. Lynch, J Higgins and Nankervis have all caused issues for the Crows in the past and will most likely do so again in this encounter.

The Crows goal kicking accuracy is once again in the spotlight after blowing a big opportunity to beat the Tigers. They kicked 12.16 and the Tigers 16.8, showing they have a long way to go when it comes to converting in front of the big sticks. Stack, J Higgins and Balta were all too good for the Crows, kicking seven goals between them along side a bounty of disposals. Milera played well for the Crows and Fogarty had a 'what if?' day, kicking two goals and five behinds at full forward. The Crows will need to regroup and stay positive, and will be looking forward to playing against some of the free agents that left them at the end of last season.

2023. Round 2. Crows Vs Giants.

Round 2 Team Selection.

Ben Keays will play game 100 in Round 2, and he has not missed a game in the last three seasons in order to reach this milestone. The Crows face a Giants team that was embarrassed last round by the Demons and will surely be out to bounce back. This game may have an extra bit of spice after the Giants’ win in the Semi-final between the two last season. The Crows have made two changes as Bailey and Walker come in for McGuirk (concussion) and Frampton.

The Crows players and supporters look like they are in for a year of pain after a disappointing loss to the vulnerable Giants. The margin blew out to 52 points in the end, as the Giants slowly destroyed their opponent play by play. Cameron and Greene were damaging, while the midfield brigade was insatiable. Idun also did well in the ruck, having the better of Obrien. For the Crows, Sloane and Crouch were the only real standouts on a dirty day.

2023. Round 3. Crows Vs Cats.

Round 3 Team Selection.

The Crows will come up against the Cats whom they beat in an elimination final last season. After the players that the Crows lost, they will find it hard to repeat the dose again in this home and away encounter. The Crows have made two changes to the team that lost to the Giants with Kingdom (debut – Ex Suns) and Seedsman coming in for Jones and Walker.

The Crows are going to find it hard to sleep after letting this one slip against the Cats. They conceded seven goals to none in the final quarter and were left stunned. Nothing could stop Hawkins and Duncan late, while Stewart was just impenetrable in defence. B Crouch and Johnson were both good for the Crows, while Kingdom did okay in defence after Doedee went down with injury.
