The Crows have now completed a busy off-season, with all the details above.

Two midfielders were selected in the National Draft, with home-grown Warner going at pick 2. Urbanih is a raw half back, seen as a potential replacement for the raft of experienced small defenders at the Crows. During the rookie draft the Crows picked four previously listed players Nash, R Grundy, Cox and Mosquito and took giant ruckman from the ACT, G Hanrahan.

They are hoping that most of their improvement will come from within, whilst also hoping that Francis can offer more support in a fragile defence.

Walker and Atkins both have suspensions carried over from the 2020 season.

1627720477414.png

The Crows begin their 2021 campaign against the Kangaroos of whom they defeated twice last season. With injuries to Doedee and Keays, plus suspensions for Atkins and Walker there were opportunities for some of the new faces to make their mark. Nash, Francis and number two draft pick Warner were all included to pull on their new colours.

In an interesting match, the Crows struggled to build on their early dominance as the Kangaroos were better at maintaining clean possession. A late charge meant that the final margin was just three points, which may not be enough to advance to the second round of Pre-Season matches. Milera, Warner, Obrien and B Crouch were all good for the Crows, and Nash kicked two goals. Sloane was uncharacteristically quiet, but is most likely just building into the season at his own pace. Thomas of the Kangaroos showed that he is a dangerous opponent, and a dead eye in front of goal.

2021. Round 1. Crows Vs Giants.
Team Selection.
1627782028859.png

The Crows had a full list to choose from for their Round 1 clash against the Giants. They will be hoping to see improvement this year, and that starts with their display against a 2021 premiership contender. Keayes, Walker and Doedee all come into the side, plus Warner, Francis and Nash will all make their debut for the Crows. Smith will be managed after a minor setback at training, and Shoenberg and Fogarty are both unlucky to miss for Round 1.

The Crows seemed overwhelmed for most of the first half, then worked their way right back into the match in the third quarter. However, a scoreless last compared to 6.5 from the Giants was enough to finish with a disappointing 58 point loss. Taranto did whatever he wanted throughout the match with 52 disposals and two goals, and Greene and J Cameron were an ever present danger in the forward half. Milera continues his climb to becoming a top class midfielder, and Warner was a shining light on debut. Murphy was reported for striking Taranto.

Round 2 Team.

The Crows will face the Bulldogs in Round 2, a team who they played twice last year losing both times. Murphy comes out due to suspension and Nash has been omitted, while Jones and debutant Davis come into the side. The Bulldogs have had midfield supremacy in previous encounters, and number two draft pick Warner will be out to change this. Suckling was massive for the Bulldogs in Round 1 off half-back and might demand some attention.

In an absolute shootout, the Bulldogs came out 20 point victors despite an encouraging performance from the improving Crows. English had a huge influence, but the influence of his midfielders was somewhat kept under control by the Crows engine room. Keays and Knight kicked three goals each, while Sloane and Warner were solid in the midfield.

2021. Round 3. Crows Vs Demons.
Round 3 Team selection.
1627873839495.png

The 0-2 Crows go into a crucial match against the Demons desperate to get their first win of the 2021 campaign. The coach is wary of praising too many ‘honourable losses’ and knows that its time to perform and get wins on the board. Atkins is the only in, at the expense of Stengle. Langdon once again looms as a danger man that the Crows will have to keep under control if they are to win.

The Crows were defeated by 28 points, despite staying with their opposition for most of the match. Weideman and Fritsch were damaging up forward for the Demons, and Langdon was once again a match winner on the wing. Obrien and B Crouch were strong competitors for the Crows, and Knight kicked five goals but there just weren’t enough contributors on the day. Jones also went down with a hamstring injury to further sour the loss for the Crows.

Round 4 Team.
1627886134017.png

The Crows will be out to save their season when they face the first placed Hawks. Another loss would make it 0-4 for the Crows, who would be disappointed with that return, despite their rebuilding status. Fogarty, Smith and Schoenberg have all earnt themselves senior selection, as Jones (hamstring), Seedsman and Davis will all miss. Mitchell and OMeara are both absolutely flying this year and stopping them may be the key to a much-needed victory. Kelly will play his 100th match in Crows colours in what has been a great effort.

The coach has labelled the Crows most recent one to the Hawks as ‘one of the most crushing days’ of his career so far. Despite the final margin being 42 points, it was looking worse before some late junk time goals from the Crows, who now sit 0-4. The Hawks were simply too good in every area, as recruit McKernan showed utter dominance in the air, while Scully and Lewis were sharpshooters in front of goal. Milera, Keayes, Walker and Kelly flew the flag, but unfortunately the Crows once again had too many passengers. There will be some nervous players ahead of selection during the week.

Round 5 Team Selection.
1627890831401.png

The Crows will face the Kangaroos in Round 5, one of the only teams that they have beaten during the coach’s career to date. These two teams started their rebuilds at roughly around the same time, but the Kangaroos seem to be showing more positive signs at this stage. Sloane has not been the same as he was in 2020 and will be hoping for a big game. No changes have been made to a 22 that lost heavily to the Hawks last week, so the coach seems to be showing faith in his game plan. Turner and T Thomas will require some close attention, as they have been in good goal-scoring form.

The Crows will be ecstatic after recording their first win for 2021 against the Kangaroos. After an even first half, the Crows piled on nine goals in the third, including five from Walker who went on to kick 10. Knight also bagged 4, while Keays and Lynch were good contributors in the victory. B Brown kicked six for the Kangaroos, while Comben was excellent in the ruck. Obrien will be concerned about his performance against an opponent who he would have tipped himself to dominate - and instead the coach called on Himmelberg in order to win more clearances. Smith was also quiet and continues a slow start to the year.

Round 6 Team selection.
1627941348352.png

The Crows will hope to continue their winning ways as they face a Lions outfit of whom they had success against last season. Smith has been omitted for Hamill, in the only selection change for Round 6. The Crows will have to be wary of Neale, who is averaging above 30 disposals and almost two goals a game. Additionally, the Lions forward line is stacked with dynamic goal kickers such as C Cameron and Hipwood.

The game played out as a thriller, as the Crows hit the lead halfway through the last quarter. The Lions though, showed just enough class and good timing to win the game by four points. The Crows will take heart from their performance, but would have to be frustrated by the ‘what if?’ Starcevich proved to be a surprising game-winner for the Lions with five goals, while the Crows were best served by M Crouch, Schoenberg and Lynch.

Round 7 Team Selection.
1627964129016.png

The Crows will face the Saints in their must win Round 7 match. Despite a poor record and slow start to the season, the Crows have had two good weeks in a row and will look to beat a team that is 3-3 and without one of their stars in Ross. Seedsman is back in the side, while Smith has earned an immediate recall. Brown and McAsey are the omissions from a side that lost to the Lions by just four points. Marshall looms as a key figure for the Saints, and Obrien will have his hands full in trying to curb his impact.

The Crows took advantage of an inaccurate Saints team, and went on to win by 18 points. Sloane played in defence, as the coach wanted to use his experience and perhaps plan for the future. Milera was excellent, with 26 disposals and three goals, and Doedee played one of his best games for the Crows. Marshall was dominant in the ruck, but B Crouch, Keays and Warner were able to produce plenty of clearances to get the ball going forward. The Crows will be hoping to use this win as a springboard for the rest of the season.

Round 8 Team Selection.
1627971575496.png

The Crows will face the third placed Swans in Round 8, who will be missing Heeney due to injury. Despite the Swans being favourites to win, the Crows will give themselves a chance for an upset after winning two of their last three games. Sholl comes in for Hamill after showing terrific and consistent form in the reserves. Franklin has 23 goals through seven rounds this year and will prove to be a handful for the inexperienced Crows’ defence.

The Crows have once again fallen short by less than a goal against a very organised Swans outfit. Despite coming home with the wet sail, the Crows missed plenty of opportunities in the last quarter to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Dawson was a thorn in the side for the Crows all day, who were unable to find the right match up for him. The coach described the performance as ‘frustratingly close,’ but lauded the team for their effort in not giving up. Knight was again stellar with four goals, and Doedee held champion Franklin to just one goal.

Round 9 Team Selection.
1627973110928.png

The Crows will go into their Round 9 clash with some confidence after a four week stretch of good performances. They face the Dockers, who lost Fyfe to injury – Crows fans will not have forgotten his game winner last year. The Crows will have to keep a close eye on Walters, and Giro – who is having a good season in front of the sticks. Murphy, Davis and Brown all come into the side at the expense of Lynch, Seedsman and Schoenberg.

The Crows have released the shackles on a hapless Dockers outfit, winning by almost 100 points in a stunning display. McHenry had 31 disposals and six goals in a best on ground performance, and Murphy returned to the team in style with four goals of his own. The Crows midfield was dominant, despite Lobb winning a high percentage of the hit outs. There were positives all over the ground for the Crows, except for Brown who didn’t look up to the level. The coach was naturally thrilled with the result, and said that ‘this win was coming.’ M Crouch will face scrutiny from the MRP for rough play on Hamling.

1627979352984.png

The Crows have been dealt a major blow during the week, with young gun and number two pick Warner going down with an ACL injury at training. The first-year midfielder was averaging 21 possessions, 3.3 tackles and 4.9 clearances in his 9 games to date. Further to this, M Crouch will miss two weeks with suspension. Nash comes in after being promoted from the rookie list, joining Jones and Schoenberg as the ins for round 10 against the bottom placed Cats. Fogarty has been omitted due to quiet performances in his role as a key forward.

The Cats were too good when it mattered, with Miers scoring six goals and Stewart was a brick wall in defence. Milera was huge for the Crows, with 36 disposals, two goals, nine tackles and seven clearances. Doedee's 50th game didn't end in a victory, but he is showing this year that he could become a premier defender in the competition.

Round 11 Team Selection.

The Crows head into their second showdown with their new coach, with an air of confidence despite a tough loss to the Cats last week. Seedsman comes in for Davis, and Butts will make his debut in defence as Brown is once again omitted. Last time they met Lycett was a match winner in the ruck, and the Reilly/Himmelberg tandem will be out to mute his influence.

The Power won by 11 points thanks largely to a seven goal to one third quarter. The Crows will be upset, as they controlled large amounts of the game and had more scoring shots. Lycett once again had a giant match, as did Rozee and recruit Begley. Milera and Sloane were fantastic for the Crows, and Butts had a solid debut match as a key defender. Jones and Nash were quiet for the Crows, and may find themselves out of the side next week.

Round 12 Team Selection.

The Crows are set to play the Lions again in Round 12, the first of the bye rounds. M Crouch is a welcome re-introduction to the team after suspension, and Hanrahan will make his debut after being promoted from the rookie list. Neale will be number one on the list for the Crows to look out for, as he recorded 44 disposals and three goals last week against the Giants.

The Lions have emerged winners in a match that they could have sealed by half time if not for their wayward kicking. They left the door open for the Crows who threatened to steal the game, but for a late flurry of goals in the last quarter from the Lions. Ballenden and Christianson were big time players for the winners, and it was hard to find many contributors for the Crows apart from Keays, Milera and Murphy. Walker went down with a corked thigh in the third, and the coach will be sweating on his fitness for next week. Regardless, it looks like 2021 is another learning year for the Crows, who had better hopes for this season.

The Crows will be hoping to repeat the dose on the Dockers in Round 13 after beating them heavily in round 9. They will be a different beast this time, as Fyfe returns to the side this week. Just the one change for the Crows, as Brown comes in for the omitted Smith – who will go back to regain some form in the reserves. Hanrahan will get another crack at senior level, despite looking all at sea against the Lions. Walters is averaging 30 disposals and almost a goal per game this year, and the coach may look to try and limit his influence.

The Crows have been crushed by the Dockers, receiving the same dose of medicine that they gave out last time they met. The Crows simply had no answers for Giro (6 goals), Walters (41, 3), Fyfe (39, 2) and Lobb (47 HO). McHenry played a top game for the Crows, and Sloane also played his best game for 2021. The Crows will have to take stock over the bye and try and come back playing better football.

The rested-up Crows are set to take on the Bombers, and the coach has certainly swung the axe. Fogarty, Smith, Frampton, Lynch all come in and pick 20, Wild will make his debut. Butts, Kelly, Sholl, Hanrahan and Schoenberg have all made way this week. The Crows will be out to restrict Stringer who has kicked 38 goals from 13 games so far this season.

The Crows are celebrating a mature win over the more fancied Bombers outfit by five goals. They led for around 90% of the match, and the Bombers couldn’t get on a significant run. Walker nullified Stringer, plus Francis, Keayes and Milera were big contributors to a memorable win.

The Crows go into Round 15 full of confidence after a strong win over the Bombers. They will face the 8th placed Eagles who have dangerous duo T Kelly and Sheed in their side. The Crows go in unchanged, demonstrating that the team is starting to find some balance and consistency in their line-up.

The Crows will be feeling deflated after another loss against a beatable opposition. Despite being with the Eagles for the majority of the first half, they were once again blown away in the third quarter and start of the last. Darling tore the Crows defence apart, in addition to the powerful midfield of T Kelly, Sheed and Yeo. The Crows will try to see this as another learning experience, but would be feeling frustration about their ladder position and season so far. Smith suffered a concussion in the loss and is likely to miss a week or two as a result.

2021. Round 16. Crows Vs Tigers.

Round 16 Team Selection.

The Crows are set to play the third placed Tigers, on the back of a disappointing loss to the Eagles last week. Smith is out with Concussion, while veterans Lynch and Seedsman make way for B Cox (Promoted rookie – Ex Docker) and Urbanih (Pick 38, 2021 National Draft). It is thought that B Cox will be used as a key position swing man, while Urbanih will play across the half back line. J Higgins and Reiwoldt pose a significant goal scoring threat, and Martin (avg 27 disposals and a goal) is an ever present danger for opponents.

The Tigers have overcome a brave Crows outfit by just 8 points in their round 16 match. The Crows came home with a wet sail, but it wasn't quite enough as the more highly fancied team got the job done. Walker kept Riewoldt to just one goal, and Milera had another stunner of a game with 34 touches and three goals. Urbanih looked comfortable on debut, however B Cox didn't quite look ready for the level. The game was probably lost for the Crows in the ruck, as Frampton and Obrien were dominated by Nankervis. Again, this loss will hurt but it is an indicator of progress for the Crows in another rebuilding season. Doedee went down in the first half with an ankle injury and may miss some football.
