That's right but I guess my question is who? Throw Kite in at the deep end perhaps. Maybe Gallman is earmarked for this role?

Will be an intersteing year next year for sure.

I think we might see Dangerfield play this role a bit as well, has played a lot of junior footy as a defender and I don't think it'd be too bad a place for him to adjust to AFL at.

So "at this stage" there have been no rookie up grades?

Or rookie delistings...
Don't we normally do them all at the same time? (main list and rookie delistings, that is)
I don't imagine we'd be keeping all four, although each one does have a reasonable case for getting another year.
I wonder when they'll announce it.

My thoughts too. Still, i'm sorry to see Massie go, he like Torney was reliable, you always knew what you would get. Very sorry to see him go. I also feel for Bryce Campbell, he deserved his shot at the big league, its debateable whether he recieved a fair crack at it. Jericho, well, I wish him the very best of luck, i think he'll be picked up by a Vic based club.

I won't say I'm "disappointed" that Gallman didn't get delisted, but it's hard to see where he fits into our side. I'd rather see a late pick go to a mature-age (say, 22 or 23) SANFL defender that may work out than to spend more time on Gallman. I hope he hasn't been retained to cover Massie's departure, because if that's the case we should just have kept Massie and recruited another youngster.

Very sad to see Massie go but I guess we all kinda knew it was coming. He's beena terrific servant to the club and I hope they keep him around in some capacity.

Presumably Petrenko will be upgraded sometime soon so we will end up with the expected five draft picks. I keep wishing for more picks but I suppose add a bunch of rookie picks to that and Donnelly and there's a lump of new players next year.

Kris Massie has always been one of my favourite Crows players, at least we could pretty much see it coming so today its not so much of a shock, unlike Torney last year.

He would have to be, that I know of, one of the nicest and friendliest players at the Club. He was always prepared to chat, always said hello and was pretty much an overall nice guy.

I wish him all the best for the future, perhaps he will be playing at Norwood next year, and if so, look forward to seeing him play then :)

It wasn't that much of a surprise, certainly not to Jason. It was more dissapointing than shocking imho. In the end it was probably the right descision though, like Ben Hart before him. Will likely turn out that way from the Massie perspective as well.

So if you delisted 3, Basset and Biglands retired, why are you getting 6 picks in the draft? am I missing someone?

And am I missing 2 if a rookie has been upgraded?

i've got a feeling that, having lost 6 players through delisting/retirement we might be looking at either elevating 2 Rookies or keeping a pick for the PSD and upgrading Petrenko
i can't see us taking pick 76 (surely the draft isn't that deep?)

I think the most important thing right now is for someone to contact Drummond and make sure he's ok....with the Bryce thing and all.

No real surprises. Massie was a good 2nd/3rd string player for you guys. Quite consistent and did his job most weeks. Jericho was hopeless and Bryce will be another of those players thats great at the 2nd level but just not quite there for AFL.

good luck to Massie for his future endeavours; he's been a great contributor to the Crows. i had him down as the least likely to be delisted from the three: Doughty, Shirley and Massie...but as the year wore on, it started looking more like his delisting was inevitable. good luck to him :thumbsu:
I think we may struggle down back for medium tall defenders now that both Bassett and Massie are gone.

Stevens may have to stay down back. Not sure Kite will be quite ready next year.
Stevens normally plays down back. nothing's changed there. Kite or Gallman might be the ones thrown in. perhaps Gallman is closer than we think to playing AFL; as most had him down to be delisted.

i guess not...because thought Crows should have only 5 picks in the draft with Petrenko's upgrading (surely, he'll be upgraded).
So as a footy guernsey numbers person, we have the following available:

3, 16, 30, 31, 32, 35 (probably to be taken by Dangerfield), 39
was Ricciuto's number retired? Petrenko should take 3.

should upgrade Petrenko if not already (make it official), and take 5 picks in the draft. isn't the only reason we'd use a PSD pick is if a player delisted by another club is of interest to the club?

Really feel for Massie and to an extent Campbell. If Campbell had been drafted in the era where Doughty and Shirley were first drafted odds are he'd be in their shoes now.

Never thought I'd actually see the day Luke Jericho was delisted:o We'll always have Richmond Luke.

Question for Drummond, Darren Pfeiffer, Bryce Campbell, Luke Jericho and Kris Massie have all been delisted. What else do they have in common?:p

So much for the aggressive list management

I think you'll find the Crows were saved from using some of their aggression by the retirements of Mcgregor, Basset and to a lesser extent Biglands. The loss of Biglands, Basset, Mcgregor and Massie will significantly decrease the average age of our side again. Following last season's end of year clean-out, this one wasn't going to be massive.

Stevens may have to stay down back. Not sure Kite will be quite ready next year.

It'll be a good challenge. Stevens will play 3rd tall very well. Bassett hardly played in 2007 and Stevens played great at CHB, so he should make the transition ok. With Stevens moving from the forward line, Walker seems more likely to get a decent crack.

Kite can play small, medium or tall. He can replace Massie and although not completely ready will be good to see how he goes. It's not traditionally like the crows to prematurely play a player (except for 2007 re sellar, jacky and danger).

Most other teams play youngsters and put trust in them. We can't be too cautious and play the older blokes forever.

Looks like Walker, Danger and Kite will hopefully play fair bit of footy for the crows next year.

Ps would have liked one more delisting but it went as expected.

Thanks to Kris Massie for his good service.

We got Kite with pick 71 last year in a draft considerably less deep than this draft.

I can only see us elevating Petrenko, Moss and possibly Martin should be retained but not upgraded.

The PSD is a possibility but I believe the Crows already said something about not intending to use a PSD pick.

out of the players that have retired or been delisted, Bassett and Massie were the only regulars in the starting 22...good for guys like Kite (possibly Gallman) who play defense; and with Burton's longterm injury, that makes room for Walker, but will be harder for others to push their way into the side.

John Reid was just on 5AA a few minutes ago.

He was asked about the defence now that bassett and Massie have both gone and his re-action was that it was time to give some young players a go there and there will be a couple of players vying for Bassett's spot in Gallman and Kite. He also mentioned Myke Cook saying that he plays in defence.

He did state that Massie was the unlucky player out of the 3 that went but decisions had to be made.

Just on Petrenko, it does seem that he hasn't been officially upgraded yet.

Reid was saying that they will make their decisions on the rookie list either tomorrow or Wednesday (I'd say tomorrow in fairness to the players).

He said the club had to decide whether there would be any upgradings, with decisions to be made on those that weren't.

As I've said elsewhere, IMO it'll be Petrenko upgraded, Moss retained and Curnow and Martin gone.

With the addition of the Irish rookie, Donnelly, that would leave 4 rookie picks. IMO that's what the club will do.

However, if they only decide to go with 3 and rookie picks and retain one more, IMO it'll be Martin as he appeared to improve the most during the year.

didn't realise Cook played defence; thought he was more of a midfield forward.

Petrenko better be upgraded...seriously.
Moss should be retained.
unsure on futures of Curnow and Martin though... wouldn't mind Martin being retained...it's so hard to judge, esp when they're only given 1 year on the list...

He also mentioned Myke Cook saying that he plays in defence.

This is true, and it highlights that there are a couple of "forgotten players" that can now battle out for a spot. I'd love to see Cook get a game there and show us his dash, and of course, Otten is tall enough to player Massie's role, I wonder if he will battle for a position there.

Very upset about Massie. Great serviceman to the club and deserved to go around for at least another year and would have been a great role model for the likes of Kite, Gallman and to a lesser extent Dangerfield to base their afl games around. Oh well we move on and push forward with the young group. Really hope Kite develops quickly next year and this decison doesn't leave a hole in our defence which has been the best part of our game for a few years now.

It was a bad descision not to offer Massie another contract despite been in career best form. Should have been offered another year but I spose the team wants to get younger. Good descisions on not re signing Luke Jericho and Bryce Campbell who are now more likely to spend the rest of their football careers outside the AFL.
