Full time international scout? This is not the NBA and we are not going to draft the next Yao Ming from China. We only need someone to look at the junior grades playing Gaelic football in Ireland.


No one entering the AFL can bypass the AFL draft so if any of theses Irish lads are good enough to become a star, this is when we should be using all of our resources to investigate how they go.

Yeah lets hire a full timer international scout so we can potentially rookie list someone who has never kicked the oval shaped football before. Great use of $50,000

Ok I got it wrong but my beef was never about recruiting them but IMO we don’t need a full time international scout to do a job that should be done by the person already in the position.

It’s a .5 position that would take 2 or 3 week to investigate.

Do you honestly think that 3 weeks would be sufficient to watch the best young players in Ireland and decide who to target??

Actually I've come up with a new plan. Let's go to Ireland, give $2000 to any boy who at age 16 or so is playing in any of their A teams and sign them up. We might as well sign 50 of them! That way we would have the best opportunity to find that diamond in the rough and we wouldn't need to spend countless hours watching tapes and games! Amazing to think that this isn't actually against the rules!!
Could it be a waste of money? Yes.
Could it be the best investment we've made? Also yes, and I could imagine we've probably blown $100,000 on other worthless investments in the past!

Unfortunately, I think this is the most disappointing part. Earlier this season I recall an article in the 'tiser about the Crows discussing the possibility of looking at Ireland.
So, while we have only just begun thinking about it, other clubs are already identifying the talent, signing up players and bringing them into their teams, hence the title of the thread!

i'm fairly sure of the success stories everyone is getting their knickers in a knot about there is a fair number that are failures.

maybe we should concentrate on getting out draft record fixed first, then look at the O/S players.

Clarke is a freak of nature and will be a superstar, no doubt about it. 12 months of footy and he loks as polished as. I would give pick 10 for clarke any day of the week, only problem the pies wouldnt give him up.

what adelaide should also be doing is building bridges at a local level like port are. If you have a look at the ethopian, sudanese and other African kids playing afl, they're all port supporters because
a - the primary schools tend to be in port supporter intensive areas such as ethelton, kilkenny and the port club seems to visit relatively often.
b - port have made a big deal about drafting and playing local indigeneous talent without it being a cynical exercise. Port pick on talent but also with a view to networks if people are similar.

Port are also very popular in the NT as are Essendon due to the good work that the clubs have historically done. It also helps that Mallee Park is in the SANFL Magpies country zone.

Having met many refugee families, most kids love afl but are following port. On a cycnical level, the first club to draft a player of African heritage will tap into a loyal audience. This will also mean that footer will help to build bridges and add a little more tolerance to the world (eg Bachar Houli and the many articles that followed his drafting).

The crows have actually done some work with the local african refugees as well. In fact they have invited a large group down to training to watch and have done some work with them with some of the players this year.

overall i think a case can be made for some involvement however lets be honest here...this is long odds peripheral talent we are talking about

and with so many afl clubs now looking at young irish talent - pies, swans, lions, blues etc - is going to be even harder to snag a real competitive advantage

There is an article on www.theage.com.au at the moment that reveals that Carlton his signed 4 of the best young talent in Ireland to what amounts to a commitment to the Carlton footy club. Essentially the club has given each boy $1600 to sign a form agreeing that if they decide to try AFL it can only be with Carlton.
So what are we doing?? Didn't we send some people over there this year to investigate? Pity we are going to be a couple of years behind again!!
Can't we for once be agressive in this type of action? Why can't we be the ones pushing the envelope and leading the comp in this area. Hell, we have the resources to do it better than almost everyone!!
Come on Crows get up with the future!!

Icke denies reports of Irish signings

CARLTON has refuted claims in newspaper reports that they have signed four Irish players however football operations manager Steven Icke has confirmed that the Blues have offered Cork defender Michael Shields the opportunity to join the club for a trial during pre-season.

"We haven't signed anyone," Icke says. "All we've done with Michael Shields is offer him the opportunity to come to Carlton and do a pre-season training camp.

"If he likes what he sees and we like what we see, we may be in a position to offer him a contract."

The Corkman, who played in his county's losing All-Ireland final bid against Kerry, wouldn't be short of company from home.

The club already has two Irish players from Cork in Setanta O'hAilpin and his younger brother Aisake, who is believed to be close to an upgrade to the senior list despite the fact a groin injury ended his season prematurely this year.

It was also reported that the club had signed three other teenagers from Galway, Laois and Armagh and were offering $1600 apiece on the condition they chose the Blues should they decide to try to make the grade in the AFL.

"I am meeting with some other players but I'm not going to state who they are.

"That's all wrong (regarding payments). No payments have been made. I'm here to talk to some people but there are no offers being made at this stage."

Icke, who arrived in Dublin late on Tuesday night, says he hasn't even met up with Shields yet.

"I haven't had any indication from Michael as to whether he'll accept our offer."

When asked if he is confident that the O'hAilpins will have Irish company next year, the football manager remains coy.

"They've made their (the O'hAilpins) spare bed up; I don't know whether that's an indication or not," he laughed.

To be fair, 3 of the boys are under 18 so they can't be rookie listed yet. One of the boys, Shields, will be spoken to by Icke and hopefully will come down for the pre-season and see what happens from there. Icke won't be letting the media know what boys he wants to recruit as other clubs could talk the boys out of it (murphy, the sydney rookie, was bound for brisbane but kenelly hard a chat to him and changed his mind to go to sydney).

I'm with you - i would much prefer to see a big involvement with the indigeneous players in the NT and using the huge advantage we have with Macca both now and after retirement. I realize that any subsequent developed players are subject to the draft and hence we may not get them anyway. Perhaps having some sort of scholarship/development squads.

I would even look into some association with the proposed NT side in the SANFL - i think there were worries that the NT side may not be competitive enough but i wondered if the AFC could develop some association whereby our fringe/young players played with the NT side in the SANFL with AFC providing coaching and other support.

Why would we want to follow in Carlton's footsteps? They've been rebuilding for 6 years straight now and haven't exactly made a lot of ground back up the ladder. Setanta O'Hailpin is a clumsy oaf who will never be half the player Stynes was. The NT idea is a better one because those kids have pace and skill and most importantly, are natural footballers.

Bloody oath. I reckon rather than wasting low picks on kids who are probably never going to make it, have a crack at some genuine excitement machines up north. Its surely worth picking 1, even as a rookie each year. Bet after 10 years we would have 3 gems.

Its a big risk..a lot of young NT boys have a lot of trouble developing to the change of lifestyle. Mostly more so than a young kid from Vic, NSW or W.A

No it's not necassary, there are just certain sections of this board who aren't happy unless their sticking the boot in. Should the Irish rookie we could have take fail while some South Australian rookie flourishes these are also coincidentally the first posters to whine about that too.

um no, most refugee children i've had contact with (my partner is a refugee lawyer) support port through contact at their schools. I'm pleased that adelaide has done this as well.
as both a norwood and brisbane supporter i could never support port (in fact i'd support collingwood before port) but that doesn't mean that adelaide couldn't learn from them every now and then as port have to work harder than adelaide to increase their support base.
I'm all for the push in this thread to get involved in the NT plus other Aboriginal lands =- can only work to everybody's advantage including the wider communities.
