Sounds reasonable - we could then on-trade that second rounder to you for Hurley, right?

Problem here is, if GWS want him, it wont be a case of them offering him $350k while we're offering him $300k (figures made up, but you get the idea), it'll be a case of us offering him $300k, and them offering $750k.

I'd be shattered if he left, but if that was the case, I wouldn't blame him.

I hope he stays here for at least 3-5 years, gets up and about, wins something with the boys, and then maybe he can go there to load up for his retirement (like Bocky).

Great work AFL, you absolute w***ers.

Dude, seriously...forget about what Connors is saying. His agenda is to drive contract offers up and deflect from his two or three stars who have already signed with GWS.

Did anyone go to the Brisbane match?

Many suggested that we should leave Taylor(194 cm, 198 kg) one-out at full forward. He was played close to goal and Brisbane were so intimidated by the one-on-one threat that they played the 184 cm, 84 kg Jed Adcock on him. He was in good position to take 4 contested marks and took....none.

Yes, he once again crumbed a beautiful goal when one of the young Brisbane players spilled a mark but can you build a forward line around a key position player that doesn't / can't take contested marks, considers a hard lead is to point his finger to the right and take two steps and can't/doesn't hold the ball in the forward line.

I was very excited in early 2009 by the glimpses of class from Taylor Walker but his improvement has been minimal. I was pleased to see him taking contested marks for Norwood (did any of the TW fans see these matches) even if it was against Matthew Lokan (185 cm) and some other kids but it was more of the same against Brisbane.

Which of the following young kids would you build a young forward line around, Jack Darling, Michael Hurley, Tom Lynch or Taylor Walker? Even Jack Watts and Tom Hawkins take more contested marks. Whilst it's fun watching a 194cm, 98kg lad sell candy in the goal square or snap a miracle goal from the forward pocket you have to ask how did he get the ball.

The answer.....two handball receives.

My concern has been that everyone in Adelaide is so obsessed with TW, he has started to believe all the B.S. Go back and watch his involvement in matches this year and stop perpetuating the myth.

Yeah right... don't worry that Walker has only missed 2 games this season yeah.

I think you'd be doing the club a great favor if you were to turn your membership in SP. Own up to it... you enjoy poisoning the club more than you ever enjoy supporting it.

If that is your intention... congratulations you're doing a fantastic job of sticking the boot into the club and rallying the hate mongers.

Deep down you contribute nothing to the club and deserve less in return. You consider your membership (if u have one) as nothing more than a license to stand on a soapbox and entertain a few idiots with an uneducated cynical hatred of the club.

I guess GWS won't want him then.

well written, i love it. very inspiring stuff.
as for the part about Mods, unfortunately Tex hasnt been given the same freedom as the great champ. Modra was so great coz he played his natural game.
Stop making Tex tow the party line and let him run around how he likes and play his natural game and we'll see HIS footy brain and talent in action!

That's great in theory, however it's a different time now. Mods under Craigy would still be under the same pressure to perform defensively as Tex, because that's what Craigy values and how the game has changed. Gone are the days where the forward target's only job is to kick bags of goals. Now it is about defensive pressure all over the ground and tackles inside 50. The last of the old generation where there is no defensive responsibility are Hall and Brown, and very soon it will only be Brown.

FWIW Mods averaged 0.4 tackles per game over his career at Adelaide. Tex averages 1.5. I understand that tackles don't necessarily equate with defensive pressure, however it is still an indicator.

Also, out of the top 50 goal scorers in 2011, Tex ranks #50 in 1%ers (knock-ons, spoils, smothers, and shepherds).

Anyway, a little off topic. I really don't have a gut feeling on whether he has signed yet or not. If he hasn't, then he is having one of the worst possible years to bump up his value to either club.

I went to the Brisbane match. Did you ever see our midfield spot up a player on the lead or were 95% of the forward line entries long bombs to Tippett's head? Do you realise that Walker is a leading full forward? Walker and Tippett compliment each other beautifully if we had any semblance of forward structure. You also realise that judging a guy in a game when he got injured before half time is ridiculous.

On another note did you go to the Hawthorn game? Did you see how Walker functioned when we didn't have the option of "bombing long to Tippett 3 on 1" every single forward entry. He kicked 4 goals. He also kicked 4 against Carlton. Did you see him kick 4 against Scarlett in the Geelong game last year? Did you notice he kicked 35 goals in 18 games as a 20 year old which is on track with some of the best current key forwards at the same age?

No-one he is saying he is a superstar now or that he will definitely live up to his potential but I really wish people like yourself would stop perpetuating the myth that he's been crap and hasn't developed since 09 because it is equally as much BS.

Phew!

I guess GWS won't want him then.

Before the start of the season Sheedy responded to yet another question about Taylor Walker from the Adelaide media saying "your the ones talking him up, not me"

If GWS are willing to pay him $600K-$700K a year then they are clueless.

I don't think their clueless.

OK, so we can't play the success card at the moment, but surely the chicks are hotter in Adelaide than the western suburbs of Sydney...

That was a very different time, with different game plans in action.

Back in 1993 (Modra's best ever year as a player), Liberatore was the game's standout tackler with 115. The next best was Nathan Burke with 72 tackles for the year.

In contrast, in 2010 Andrew Swallow has 183 tackles. Liber's total would have left him in equal 22nd place on the tackling ladder - and Burke's total of 72 wouldn't have placed him in the top 100 (he would have been 102nd).

Modra was a great footballer for his time and I have very little doubt that he would have adapted to the changing styles like all great players have done, before and since.

Walker's figures just don't stack up. There's no two ways about it.

The bolded part is particularly poignant.

There was a trial game this year (either Richmond or Carlton i think) where Tippett was out, and Walker was the go-to, leadup forward, and he kicked a lazy 7.

I find it ironic he gets dropped for tlack of tackling pressure, he comes back against Brissy, lays a tackle, cops a knee injury out for 4 weeks.

It's not a real hard decision.

There aren't many jobs in the land where you get a significant pay rise for exactly the same job description and level of responsibility.

Ummm yes there are ask the throngs of young men and women who have joined the mining industry or go nursing, teaching, policing in undesireable locations.

Sometimes it's not all about money!

Not sure if it's rumour or fact, but the general consensus is that Gold Coast are paying Krakouer $500K.

Nathan ****ing Krakouer.

Yes, I did go to all of those matches.

Firstly, if we simply focus on the first half against Brisbane, we did not bomb 95% of balls to Tippett. Our structure changed in the second half and so did our forward entries.

The only game that he has ripped apart this year was the trial match against the Freo seconds.

Who wins the prize for guessing who played on him all match?

What exactly do you expect in terms of "ripping up a game" from a 20 year old key position forward? He kicked 4 against Hawthorn and 4 against Carlton - 2 top 4 sides. He is in his 3rd season playing regular AFL footy, his 4th year on the list.

Tippett on the other hand has only kicked 4 goals in a game once this year - against St Kilda - who are more of a basket case than Richmond this year. Tippett is 3 years older than Walker.

Jack Riewoldt as a 20 year old in 2009 kicked 6 goals once - against the powerhouse that was Essendon. His next best hauls for the year were 3 goals which he did on only 4 occasions. He was goalless in 4 matches and only kicked 1 goal in another 9 games. so in 13 of 20 games he kicked 0 or 1 goal. In 2010 he won the Colemen medal.

In 2003 as a 20 year old in his third year Nick Riewoldt kicked 4 goals in only 3 games. He kicked 3 goals in another 2 games. He was goalless in 8 games and only kicked 1 goal in another 6 games. In 14 of 22 games he kicked either 0 or 1 goal.

In 2002 as a 20 year old Jonathan Brown's biggest goal haul was 2 goals. He did that on 3 occasions. He was goalless in 7 games. In 16 of 19 games he kicked 0 or 1 goal.

Maybe you should reassess what you expect of a 20 year old key forward.

lot of truth spoken here

i beleive a full forwards best years are between the ages of 22-23 and 30, he's still a few years away from being dominant IMO

dunstall - was 20 or 21 when he made his debut, and his real breakthrough year was when he was 22/23 - http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/players/J/Jason_Dunstall.html

lockett - was 21 when he got his first ton - http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/players/T/Tony_Lockett.html

lloyd - possibly an exception - http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/players/M/Matthew_Lloyd0.html

hall - was 25 when he finally cracked 50 in a season - http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/players/B/Barry_Hall.html

I was at the Carlton match and Taylor's performance was a mixture of some exciting moments mixed with some very average footy when the ball wasn't in his hands.

Do you measure full forwards by goals alone. (Perhaps we should draft Grenville Dietrich)

How would you compare Taylor's season to Jack Darlings? Jack is younger, shorter and much lighter. He has kicked 11 goals in 10 games and if you think Taylor's had a better season with 14 goals in 7 games then there's no point arguing with you.

At 21 years of age I expect a bit more Jonathan Brown and a bit less Eddy Betts.

I have an issue with your use of the word "you."

Your comments should really be directed at 50% of the posters on here and also the AFC match committee.

If you could just run me through the individuals who have had 15+ clearances in games against West Coast this season that would be awesome, thanks.

Absofrickenlutely - Coopers craps all over anything from the Tooheys state. Although I am partial to James Squire Amber Ale ;)

I stumbled upon the James Squire Golden Ale at the Seven Stars the other week whilst in Adelaide - damn good drop, however the Coopers Clear {I'm in training} and Paleys are my staple!
