An iteresting post i found on Walker by VC back in September 2007

I have seen Taylor Walker play three times. All three games at the Championships - for those really alert I managed to get video of the NSW vs. NT game that was played in Sydney.

I've written a pretty comprehensive review on him on this board before, but the search function is down at the moment so I can't be bothered finding it. It would've been in early July though.

As far as answering a few questions that have popped up in this thread he is very good at ground level. Pretty clean below the knees - not magnificent but certainly good. As already mentioned he was equal leader in goal assists at the Championships. He seems to be an unselfish player and he has very good vision and awareness.

Hard running player who puts a lot of forward line pressure on. It looks like he really loves to tackle. I saw him lay a couple of absolutely ferocious tackles, particularly in congested situations when the ball was just squirting free to the opposition.

He looks quick off the mark and often burns his opponents by getting in front and staying there. He's a good mark, but importantly he's a courageous mark. Against Queensland in horrendous conditions he ran with the flight of the ball to take a boner worthy mark.

What happened?

Tony Shaw must have alzheimers ! Certain Shaw boys DUI, hit parked car, one leaves the club. Bit worse than haven a beer with his mates from the Hill who just won a cutainraiser to Port game. Why not talk about a l;ad called Jackson McInnes that kicked 5 goals and had big wraps about him by som sanfl clubs watchn ! Shit that might be grass roots journalisam from the little collingwood garden gnome .

What happened?

I honestly believe he struggles with the way he is coached and expected to make decisions.

As has been talked about alot, we like to apply frontal pressure, not commit oureslves to the ball carrier.

As we've seen through Neil's press conferences he has very strict expectations and 'lines' he doesn't want people to cross.

Combine that with someone who has always played the game so instinctively and probably doesn't push VB for rocket science degrees and I think he's playing confused half the time. Goodness knows half the team looks confused at times.

Even the 'hit' he got reported for at Norwood last night - the first thing I thought on seeing it is that one of the KPI's he was given to get back into the side was to 'split packs open'. At least 3. Ideally 4.

I know it sounds simplistic but I can't dismiss it from my mind as a real contributor to they way he plays his footy atm.

Thats why you leave a ball pitching well outside off stump.

BigFella, I think it's just immaturity mate, he was very good for most of last year, he's still just getting his head around what's required I think.

It doesn't look to me like he doesn't understand what he's meant to be doing, it just looks like he can't be bothered doing it at the level required.

He seems like a great young lad, who has a bit of arrogance (good) about him, who perhaps sometimes reads his own press and gets a bit ahead of himself.

Wasnt he dropped multiple times last year?

Im not seeing the massive contrast between the supposed good last year, and this year.

Walker was dropped once last year, after round 4 and left out for 3 matches. He rejoined the team in round 8 and didn't miss another game.

I've no doubt there is some immaturity involved - esp as it relates to making the correct decision with confidence.

I don't genuienly believe he is 'soft' and 'lazy' when I analyse the infamouse 'Treng(r)ove' incidents. I think 'dumb' or 'confused' are far more applicable. They were not instinctive responses IMO.

Do you believe the bump/non-tackles were an act of softness or a poor decision? Really?

Either way it needs to be cleaned up obviously. My concern, reinforced by listening to Rehn's view on tex, is that we need to find another way to coach/get through to him - and I'm not sure the philosophies of the incumbent head coach seem to embrace different strokes for different folks.

I've no doubt he gets a bit ahad of himself but combine that with someone who might understand the expectations but not be able to apply them correct on the field (e.g. when to corrale and keep them boundary side vs when to attack the body fiercly) - you get a very confused and lazy player.

Walker was dropped from the round 20 clash v Brisbane at the Gabba.

Suprisingly you didnt know that all things considered.

Good pick up!

He's a big boy now. Genuine KPF size - perhaps he was more elusive/agile before?

Chasing and pressuring small, running defenders probably not going to be his forte.

David Noble’s 2010 review:
“Tex set his year up through his pre-season. Between November and March I thought he was one of our most consistent trainers and up forward he led the way in terms of how he went about his training. He really started to get on top of the issues we'd been concerned with, like his contested ball. His defence was fine and he got his tackle numbers up. He matured really well in his footy this year.”

Maybe like us he is trying to figure out who the forward line coach is now?

So why'd you drop him twice then, David?

Well the first time was because we were playing the Bulldogs under the roof at Etihad and wanted to bring in a speedster for the fast track

Next time Walker gets dropped it'll be because Neil had a bad dream or something equally ridiculous...

It's like you're in my head...excellent summary of the situation :thumbsu:

I have already resigned myself to the fate that walker is going.

If he doesnt. Bonus

Still believe he's staying. But didn't like reading that this morning.

He'd be the worst type of player to lose. Not recently drafted, not living up to potential, not getting games. We'd get shit compo for him.
