Crows plan Walker talks!

I think Danger comes out of contract at the end of 2012. Some brainiac at the AFc decided to give him a 2 year deal at the end of last year. Surely a 3+year deal is the way to go with a player as talented as Danger.

Is it just me or do the AFC seem to not give out 3 + year contracts or is it the players only wanting short term contracts?
And here I ask the same question that no one wants to answer!

Why would Dangerfield sign on for more than 2 years?!

He is a kid with unlimited potential, that is yet to hit his straps. He is at the age where he is expected to have the greatest development curve of his career so why would he jeapordise his earning potential by signing a long term deal after practically his 2nd year in the competition?!

Why would he sign on for another 3 years at the current price when potentially, he would be worth more on the open market in that 3rd year than he would be at the time of signing a contact.

We are talking potentially earning some $100K+ less in that 3rd year than if he signed for 2 years and renegotiated at the end of that.

Sometimes fans are so blinded by the passion for their club that they are not thinking with a clear head here. If I was Dangerfield's agent, I would be advising him to sign on for 2 years instead of 3 because that would be a smart business decision. If its someone that has already reached his peak and might even be in a bit of a decline, you go for the security of a long term deal (in which case the club is unlikely to offer that) but if I am a young buck that still has a lot of development left in me, I am signing up for 2 years at the time to give myself a chance to maximize my earning potential in what is a short AFL career.

So what we know is that:
afc have made a good offer to Tex.
Gws has approached him with an offer of more money.
Tex loves the boys and he loves the club.
Tex has suspended negotiations on his contract.

Sounds to me like a classic case of a player suspending contract talks to see if he can squeeze out a little extra dough. Nothing to see here!

AFC have made an offer but have GSW? Not disputing it - I just havent read this anywhere.

But this is about right - suspend talk to negotiate extra cash. Its absolutely the standard procedure with these things.

IF Walker does go to giants, I would say that of all the teams in the AFL, the Crows would be the most screwed from these 2 new teams coming in. Bock and Walker is big. Even if Pies lost a Pendles or Thomas, they only lost Fraser to GC who wasnt probably going to play for them anymore.

I think Bock was the biggest addition to GC behind Ablett, so unless the Cats lose another solid player, I think most would agree that on the screw-o-metre, crows would be pushing a 10.

...febrile conspiracy theory using gossip and innuendo as facts...

Reasons why Tex may leave:

Money. GWS have more money to spend than the AFC, and while they do have to spread it around, so do we. In all likelihood we can't match the GWS offer. There is every reason to believe that Sheeds and Williams are just as seduced by Walker's potential as us Crows fans.

The city. Yeah sure, Tex may have been a little intimidated by Sydney when he was a teenager in Broken Hill, but it seems to me that he is a larger than life character that would suit the big smoke well. Personally I'm biased as I couldn't wait to get out of Adelaide, but I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that a strutting rooster like Walker would enjoy the excitement of Australia's biggest city.

The club. While he was a Crows supporter growing up, I'm not really convinced that would be a major factor now that he's matured a little and realises that this is his career. I'd also posit that Sheeds and Williams can be pretty damn charming when they want to be, cancelling out the boys own adventure story.

Neil Craig. Craig hasn't handed a gold ticket to Walker, rather he treats him as he does other players, ie he gives the player a set of benchmarks to achieve, and if the player reaches them he is played. If he doesn't achieve the benchmarks, he doesn't play. Now, those benchmarks may be too harsh, or Walker may think they're too harsh, or think the whole method is bunkum. Craig may be an absolute goose to Walker when he informs Tex. This could push Tex over the edge, but we don't know, and to state that we do know is ridiculous.

I hope he doesn't go. I hope that the obvious camaraderie he shares with Tippett has a major impact on why he stays. I also hope that Craig and Walker have a good relationship that breeds finals success.

To state that the only possible reason Walker would go to the GWS must be Craig's treatment of him, and then cite rumours and gossip as evidence is just...how did you frame it? Oh yeah, bullshit.

With all due respect to Tex, no way is he a bigger loss than gaz jnr. He's top five in the league and will be for years to come. Tex has undisputed talent but is not in the same class.

Walker would be the biggest loss to any club to-date if you consider that Ablett has won Geelong a few flags already.

In retrospect, if we look back at the end of his career and he has fulfilled his potential, you may be right. But at the moment, it’s a bit early to say that.

Hope you blokes dont get raided again, to loose two top players in 2 years is a bit much..

All though if he does go and you get some decent first round compensation for him it might work in your favour... he may be talented but he could really go either way with his consistancy and dedication.

This made me laugh.

I always find that when comparing players and their worth, ask yourself this question: would you trade one for the other. This will tell you which player is more valuable. So if you were person pulling the strings - and taking off your crows goggles - would you right now trade walker for ablett? Ignore everything else, ignore who's won premierships and who hasn't. Just both players head-to-head. Would you give up walker for ablett? If yes, your comment above must be retracted.

Ablett didnt win geelong anything, geelong won geelong a few flags. Its a team not 1 person. Walker is as good as gone.

WTF!?! Cornsey's and Rowey's gut feel from the people they've spoken to is he's gone.

Why are you surprised?

The apologist for Sir Neil can say what every they like but every sign suggest he's gone.

IMO he's gone until i hear otherwise that way, the disappointment won't be so devo.

do you realise you weren't the only team to lose a player to the Gold Coast right?

FFS your mob need to pull their head in

Not sure what's going on. Last night Trigg said we hadn't put a deal to Tex because he wouldn't let us. I heard this myself. Then Capel in the Advertiser and Gill on the AFL website said we had put up a deal and Capel quoted Trigg. As I said last night it makes no sense at all for Walker not to have even seen what our offer is if he is hanging out for more money. If this is the case he has either signed all ready or is waiting to see how he is treated this year.
